When in the middle of an OCD spike, the key is to determine whether your anxious thoughts have any basis in reality or not. It’s like with phobic thoughts. If you determine they are connected to reality, you act to remove the threat. If not, you don’t act on them, you let them go. The difficulty is to maintain the ability to ascertain objectively whether a mental discomfort triggered by some events has any basis in reality or not. Personally, I find that if, from the start, I abstain from investing time and efforts in behaviors that my judgment deems irrational, given the information available at the time, and invest in rational behaviors, it’s easier for me to maintain good judgment. It all comes from the unconscious effect of sunk costs on one’s judgment. Research has proven that sunk costs do influence a person’s beliefs. For instance, individuals caught up in psychic scams will continue investing time, money and emotional energy into the project, despite doubts or suspicions that something is not right (Wikipedia). What do you think?

It is hard to judge when fear is involved…and there are shades of gray. It can help.

I knew what to do and what
I wanted to do, but with my broken mental and brain status, I couldn't come up with a clear path and shared reminders like the
    ones shown in this video.
also I struggled feeling lonely all
    the way of this process
so thank you for sharing and letting me feel not lonely and not letting me lean on you at the same time
    from Japan🙏🏻

Feeling lonely through this process is common, and having others to help you along the way is so helpful! A therapist, coach, or even others on the recovery journey. I have a few membership programs and people love having others to support them, and they learn so much about recovery from them, along with me as I guide them to the Lifetime Recovery Stage. i'm struggling so hard about something with my ROCD right now. I'm dying to pour it here or to my bf and get some comfort and get it out of my chest but i know i shouldn't. Instead i just watch your videos and cry. I am a student and i'm not able to pay for a professional to help me, especially in my country. I just want to numb my brain and feel nothing... Thank you for your videos tho.

Hey when you say invite the thoughts in ! It doesn’t mean you’re not like « scared » of the content right ? Bc the content is scary it’s more that you’re like I don’t care I’ll do my stuff anyway or is it different ?

Can you help me.I was a us tax analyst preparing returns. I started working in december 2022 and by may 2023, i got with ocd and chechiking more than 10 times a return, i couldn't do the work properly and preassure of ocd made me to resign from that job. Now i am depressed because of this ocd. I think Analysing numerical data for 8-12 hours if different clients may caused this problem of repetitive checking

Why not resisting the urge to check things excessively? I know it's not easy, especially when in a certain mood. It gets better with habituation. I had the same problem. Then I read information on the "sunk cost fallacy" and "exposure and response prevention". It's when I realized the importance of abstaining from investing time and efforts in a behavior that doesn't make sense, though it may feel uncomfortable at first. I came to the conclusion that OCD is the result of a snowball effect and that the first moves are crucial when triggered or not by something in the environment.

    • @MyOCDCoach

That’s not what it means. The break up urge is the compulsion of avoidance, which you don’t want to do. That is referring to doing something you’re afraid to do.
