    As abother subscriber im really torn between the x1 gen 9 and the nano. Do you know whats the better price for money purchase if one would neglect the weight factor and the ports, which are both obvious. Thanks a lot and keep it going!

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is hard to know for sure what configurations the X1C9 will come in. For me. I didn't want a 1080p screen, but I didn't want a 4K battery/wallet killer either. So the 2K option which is on all models of the Nano got it a point. The fact that all of the Nano's came with the IR Camera and Fingerprint reader as standard got it two points. Those are often options on other configurations. The form factor of 13" was also attractive to me since I enjoyed the size of my Surface Book 2 and avoided the larger model for that reason. As seen in this video, the Nano is more akin to the form factor of an older X220 in terms of size. That got it another point.
      If you can wait and see what the X1C9 configurations are like and see if one meets your needs vs price then I'd say wait. For me, the reasons listed above helped me decide since those features were really important to me.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on how you plan on using it. The only thing to consider is what pre-built configurations are available in your region and whether you are happy with the rest of the specs included with that CPU.

    we ended up getting a Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 4. Got tense when waiting for it, UPS said it was "Out for Delivery", then said that customer requested it go through his broker which was not true, called both UPS and Lenovo to correct this, 15 minutes later the doorbell rang and I saw the butt end of the delivery guy heading down the driveway and what looked like spit on my glass door!! If I get Covid I'll know why. Anyway, the laptop is fine so far. The Nano was just too far out of our range. BTW, Lenovo pricing is crazy....one with 4k and an two generations newer i7 was cheaper than the FHD i5 we got, but heard bad things about their 4k and flicker.

    This is the first time I've watched your video. I don't have any modern X1 Carbons sadly to compare it against directly but if you want to see 16:10 compared against 16:9 I quickly do it in my X200 video. You get a little bit more vertical real estate.

      @@LaptopRetrospective I went to the X200 video that you suggested; is that the video that showed four more cells in the Excel document? That's actually staggering. Thank you for that tidbit of information. I know the as-of-yet unreleased ninth generation X1 Carbon screen will have the 16:10 ratio and I'm wondering how that will compare to your nano. I'm still slightly apprehensive about using dongles because I'm loathe to replace my USB sticks for USB C type (I don't know if SanDisk makes a USB C Ultra Luxe 3.1 which I only just bought!).
      Anyway, thank you for your suggestions and thoughts. It's also really nice to have someone very well-mannered too! I'm a subscriber now. I'm looking forward to browsing through your playlists and learn more about laptops of old.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for your support Joshua. I'm glad you found the brief comparison useful. The X1C9 is available in some markets already and it certainly has a few more ports, notably HDMI and USB A. I'm not finding myself missing the ports so much and I have dongles if I need them. The "2K" screen, Windows Hello camera and fingerprint reader as standard features were key, especially in a 13" package. The Carbon will have an HD+ panel and likely 4K option which is too little and overkill in my mind so the Nano was a fairly easy choice to make. Specs/$ for the Nano against the X1C8 were decent too when you consider what is standard. Let me know if I can by of any further assistance.

      @@LaptopRetrospective Honestly I'm not sure. The price isn't so much the deciding factor.. more about glare vs no glare. I have a dell xps 15 9560 right now with a 4k touchscreen and the glare is really bad. I want to avoid a ton of glossy glare. I can deal with some .. but not a lot

    • @LaptopRetrospective

      Even this touch panel on the Nano isn't that bad in term of glossy. It will probably come down to panel options they give with the Gen 9.

      @@LaptopRetrospective my primary use will be like a digital nomad around my own house for now.. table to table.. couch surfing.. Laying on bed.. The weight of the nano is very tempting..I will do mostly light coding.. surfing.. media consumption.. and running some vm's.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The weight is a huge part of the "you need to hold it to get it" factor. It's pretty mad. It's also essentially the same form factor as the X220 as shown in the video.

    I am also on the second week of ownership of this X1 Nano and my experience has been very disappointing. WiFi is very slow to reconnect after sleep or booting. The Bluetooth performance with my MS mouse is so bad I really can't use it. The battery life is average at best but if you close the lid on battery the laptop will be stone dead within hours. The biggest problem is the constant BSoD's that have caused me to stop using the laptop. So far, Lenovo has not been able to fix any of these issues so I will likely return it.

    I just got the i5 version and have been disappointed by the thermals. It bottom gets hot while updating 30ish apps from the Microsoft Store. The fan kicks in even when the CPU is hoovering around 40C. Not sure if mine is not typical or not but so far disappointed by the thermals and the fan constantly running. The ambient temperature is about 70F.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My fan runs when I'm really, really pushing it. Lots of updates, heavy use, but I also have the i7, not sure if that is the difference we are seeing.

      @volatilememory9338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LaptopRetrospective I can understand if it's under load. I am just using it for normal web browsing albeit with Chrome, and the fan is constantly running. I would expect the i7 to be even hotter. I am just deciding between exchange or just return.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long have you had it? If it is still updating software and running a little warm, that's one thing and not uncommon, but if it's hot and fan kicking on under normal use that's another thing. I can count on one hand how many times I've heard the fan and they were massive system updates or PassMark/benchmarks.

    • @volatilememory9338

      @@LaptopRetrospective I have only gotten it since last Friday. I am sure that the Windows Update was not running. It got a bit warmer than I had expected given the reviews that I have watched and read. It was installing updating the Microsoft Store apps. I also did all of the Lenovo software updates.
      I am currently typing this on the Nano right now. The temperature is 38C-40C and the fan is running at 3000 RPM. The bottom is slightly warmer than the top. I can't hear the fan at 3000 RPM. When I first turned the Nano on, the fan was not running until the CPU temperature hit about 70C. Once it's running, it won't turn off even though it's now 38C doing almost nothing at 2% CPU usage for the last 5-10 min. Power Option is set to "Better Performance". Laptop is plugged in and at 100% charge.
      I really like the Nano with the size, weight, and screen quality. It's also pretty cool to have Windows Hello IR camera and fingerprint log in. The keyboard is also the best compared to all of my previous laptops. It's just annoying that the fan just won't stop spinning.
      Correction: I have been using Microsoft Edge, not Chrome for web browsing.
