Hi from England. I'm still using an x220t (i7, 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD) as my daily driver: It's in a dock and I use an external keyboard, mouse and 24" monitor. For some light gaming it has an an external GPU (nVidia GTX 660 Ti) connected via a Beast to the ExpressCard slot. All works just fine, but it looks like it won't run the upcoming W11, which is a pity.
I’m sure someone will patch Windows 11 soon enough to work with older models. It seems like such an artificial limitation to restrict which computers can run it if they otherwise meet the basic system requirements.

My current Thinkpad E14 Gen3 is the first laptop I've owned that I absolutely adore. I have a MacBook Pro 2020 from work and while that laptop is definitely ahead in terms of specs, I personally prefer my Thinkpad. When I eventually buy myself a new laptop it will 100% be another Thinkpad and maybe even an high end one like the X1.
just got myself an l15 and e15. both is very similar and got amd ryzen 5 chipset, but E15 got better speaker while L15 handle heat better. Also L15 got a fingerprint sensor. L15 have 2 upgradeable ram slot while e15 comes with soldered 8gb ram and upradeable 1 slot ram
It seems the L series is slightly better built than the E series. With more ports and more upgradeability it’s essentially the modern successor to the old T series. I’m interested in getting the L14 AMD Gen 2 when it comes out!
12:49 It is important to mention that being unable to log on when you changed the fingerprint reader is most certainly a security feature. I vaguely remember that on an older thinkpad where the fingerprint reader was just wired to the rest of the board so all an attacker had to do was putting some voltage on the wire and the account was unlocked.
It is indeed a security feature and I understand the intent, however if the reader ever needs to be replaced and the device is out of warranty you'll essentially have to lose that feature.
@@SebisRandomTech Just watched a video about the M1's performance for the first time... I feel like I'm getting my mind blown on the state of mobile chips these days lol
The M1’s optimization truly is impressive. It’s incredible to see how well it can perform under the right conditions and how efficient it is per watt, with battery life that almost no Windows laptop can match. Unfortunately as long as Apple aggressively pushes anti-repair practices and lobbies against things like Right to Repair I will never take interest in any of their current products, despite how tempting it may be.
I'm still here, just very busy with school and life. I have videos in the works, it's just a matter of finding the time to get them finished and uploaded. Thanks as always for watching!
Would you say there's a better thinkpad for this for video editing? I was looking at a T480 before this, but it seems like Thinkpads in general aren't specifically suited for editing.
A story of aspect ratios: 4:3 - It's like a classic TV! Plenty of room to get stuff done. 5:4 - Productivity masterpiece. 1280 x 1024 is perfection 16:10 - Okay, we get it. You really want to watch widescreen content. We left enough vertical room for you still have your taskbar or whatever visible, so you can still multitask and get work done. 16:9 - Yeah, ok. We now understand that you are merely a media consumption muppet, and don't want to have any inactive region of the screen while watching your braindead full screen videos. Got it. 256:171 - You know who you are. I love you.
bruh some people just prefer 16:9 there's nothing wrong with that, we all have personal preferences, don't judge someone on something dumb like what aspect ratio they prefer
I just got an X1 Carbon Gen 9 for work. to replace my T440. This generation is a huge leap forward for the X1 line, mostly due to the 11th gen cpu and the taller aspect ratio display. I wish the Gen 9 were my laptop and not owned by my work because I would send it to you so you could do a review and comparison.
I heard in some review videos that the keyboard isn't as good any more as the older models. I own a T480 and am happy. What is your experience with the keyboard?
One of the problems that I am having with both of my nano's ( I own two of them). Is they constantly drop their internet connection?. I have the the Microsoft see your face of windows 10 engaged. One of the units has the Qualcomm x5500 chip in it. It says under the network menu connection connected but no internet This is a chronic problem with the nano's I am told. Any insight would be appreciated.
I haven't had issues with the internet connection on mine so unfortunately there isn't much I can suggest to help. My best recommendation would be to see if anyone on r/thinkpad or the thinkpads.com forum has any suggestions, and if that doesn't work contact Lenovo and see what they can do to troubleshoot the issue (I assume both are still under warranty).
Newer Thinkpads do have a lot of crashing and firmware issues. My X1 Carbon 6th gen went into the famous Thunderbolt 3 firmware thing once, which blocked me from using Thunderbolt devices for months. and my E14 gen 3 AMD version had to replace its motherboard just before warranty expired. and the replacement motherboard failed again after warranty period, so I have to pay for another motherboard for around 125 USD. Don't get me wrong. I don't hate newer Thinkpads, but they are not built the same as the older ones.
15.12 I also had 2 motherboard replacement. First time when the machine was 10 months old and the second time on the last day of warranty (1 year) I'm quite upset and disappointed with the quality. Even my old 15,000 baht cheaper acer laptop doesn't give me any problem at all. But at least it works fine now.
Yep, I was disappointed with how quickly mine failed but it’s been working fine ever since, and like I said it isn’t rare for a few units to fail early on when a product is produced on such a large scale.
As I said in the video I always find myself gravitating back towards that model despite its age. It's such a solid machine. I do like the X1 Nano for the most part despite its shortcomings.
Nice long term review which gives much more info than a 1 day or 1 week review. That's too bad about the blue screens. But the onsite warranty came in handy! I agree with you about not having the "power port" on a separate board for replacement purposes.
Welcome back. Great video. I got my Nano yesterday. QC has declined, the right arrow key was already dangling after just one day of use. The thermal profile is quite horrible - I already did a repaste job and it didn't help. But I guess most of the time, I won't be running it under heavy load, so hopefully, the nano will last for a few years. I am in Hong Kong, but got a US version due to the lower price. So it is a bit worrying about warranty if it comes to that..... :(
Interestingly it seems my thermal situation wasn't bad, maybe it's a QC thing or maybe it's just you and I use our computers for different things. Regardless I hope it works out for you and thanks for watching!
@@SebisRandomTech Thank you sir. I opened up the back cover and was going to do a repaste job. I found that the air duct wasn't installed properly. I removed it and making sure the hot air could be directed out and it seemed to solve the problem. On battery, now it stays around 30-50C depending on load. while plugged in, it can still hit 100C, but I will live with it. Quite happy now. Thank you
Hey there Sebi.. i’ve just bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T400 from my local fleamarket the screen seems to be black however it works perfectly with an external monitor will this be an easy fix do I need to take it apart and fiddle with the ribbon cables?
Sounds like an issue with the backlight. Either the backlight itself is burned out, the inverter for it (if it's a CCFL model) has gone bad, or the backlight fuse on the motherboard has been blown.
16:01 you ain't kidding. Lenovo sent me a laptop without a dedicated graphics card (should have had an nvidia 3050; didn't get anything), which I noticed in a few different programs (and system information). So we emailed them about the issue. And kept emailing. This was back in _august._ After emailing them over tens of times over so many months, it finally seems to be going somewhere. But they aren't even replacing it or refunding - I'm just sending it to them so they can confirm the missing graphics card. After _eight months._
12:27 I can't take it. What kind of jerk sets a laptop outside on a bridge. Then makes sure the background has the only set of rails that are 1.5"-2" higher than the rest?
I love my nano EXCEPT that the 2242 SSD drive is non-standard. You can't just easily replace it or buy a spare for backup purposes. Lenovo decided to put a freakish one-sided SSD in this (meaning chips on only 1 side) and normal SSDs with chips on both sides will not fit into this laptop. It took nearly 9 months before Lenovo had replacements of these allowing me to order one. I imagine that if my Nano had required repair I would have just been out of luck.
Agreed, I've thought of upgrading the storage in mine because the original 256 GB SSD just isn't enough for my needs, but it is very tricky to find a replacement drive that will fit.
great video. are you still using the X1 nano today as your daily laptop? can you recommend it today? 16gb ram X1 nano's are selling for $1,100 to $1,300 USD price range now on Ebay. Is it worth it? thank you.
Typing from mine as we speak! Definitely try to get a 16 GB version if you want a Nano for the sake of it being more future-proof. See what Lenovo is charging for a similar configuration before buying one on eBay, you might be able to snag a good deal!

In your opinion is the keyboard easily replaceable for this machine? I can order a replacement keyboard but I would need to disassemble the laptop in order to do it and I'm not sure I'm confident in doing that.
Hey Sebi, I would like to ask you a question if possible. Which ThinkPad would you suggest buying for the incoming 2022/2023 for value/money? I am a student and the laptop I am currently using is perfect I do light tasks on it, mainly Microsoft and internet browsing but the problem I have is the battery time - I would certainly need somewhat of 4-6 hours nonstop running w/o AC plug. I was browsing for a ThinkPad which would be suitable for this task and I saw that x270 seems like a good alternative - easy to carry cuz it's small and has 2 batteries. What would you suggest! I've watched your all older videos of ThinkPad ratings but I would like to know if there have been any changes throughout those 2 years and do you still think the same about the models you said you think are the best. Thank you beforehand! Best Regards, Martin
The X270 wouldn't be a bad option for your needs and price range, plus as you said with the swappable batteries it can last a long time away from an outlet.
It's one of many signs that were once used for Pittsburgh's streetcar network. They marked where streetcars stopped at, similar to "bus stop" signs today.
Hey sebi, do you have any tips on how to restore the functionality of the thinkvantage button? Any replacement software? cause I know that Lenovo removed the thinkvantage software
Lenovo's Vantage software more or less replaced the ThinkVantage software, but otherwise it looks like it's been phased out. I think some people have managed to repurpose the button but that's a bit beyond my area of expertise.
Hi sebi I'm looking for a ddr4 upgradeable budget thinkpad with external battery for programming and coding with enough graphic card for some games what's your choice? Can you guide me please.
Hey Sebi! I'm sure you get asked these types of questions all the time, so please forgive me, but I'm currently trying to decide between a Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 and a Thinkpad T14S Gen 2 and I was curious what you would consider to be the better of these two laptops? This is going to be a big purchase for me so I am trying to do as much research as possible so any insight or opinions you could share would be a tremendous help!
The T14s is going to have better specs, more premium features, and is generally built a little better. It also is available with better screens. The E14 still retains some degree of upgradeability that is lacking on the T14s and is obviously a bit more affordable, but isn't built as well and is pretty lacking on ports. I would also suggest looking into the L14 Gen 2, which has more upgradeability than both and has more features than the E14, while still being a good bit cheaper than the T14s. I'm somewhat tempted to pick one up for myself!
Hi Sebi, keep up the good work!! How do you think an x230 quad core mobo swap will hold up against t430 quad vs t480 quad vs x1 nano performance wise? Interesting topic for a comparison video? That port selection is just not good. I am in tbe market for a new, long-term laptop. I am looking at maybe buying a brand new framework laptop, but thats $1.5k! I understand that thinkpads have a legacy of repairability and upgradability, as well as utility. So i am up for any suggestions! I do a little bit of gaming like minecraft and roblox, but mostly, I'll be watching youtube, web browsing, and other simple tasks like document viewing/editing (i am a student, def not going into an engineering field lol so i dont need any power hungry software i dont think)

@@michaelkoerli3815 The Dell Precision 7000 series of mobile workstations may also be worth looking into. At this point most laptops that have all of the things you're looking for will either be mobile workstations or gaming laptops, as most ultrabooks are using some combination of soldered RAM or USB-C charging nowadays.
Can u make a video about Chinese mods in the future? Like a x210 x2100 x330 from 51nb or other modders with high resolution screens and modern motherboard replacements or BGAEd processors. Really curious to see ur opinions about those machines.🙏
I would love to, unfortunately getting my hands on one has proven to be a major challenge. If I ever do you can *guarantee* that I will make a video about it!
The X1 Nano must be a great laptop indeed! But unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the quality of Lenovo laptops is really lower now, comparing to 10 years ago. See, Sebi had his motherboard replaced. I've got brand new T14gen1 about a year ago and after maybe 3-5 months my motherboard had to be replaced as well. I've purchased my private Ideapad (yeah, that's not a ThinkPad, but still...) and it had a motherboard malfunction as well... In my company we have dozens of ThinkPads and it's sad to hear that some of them had to have their motherboard replaced as well. ThinkPads are known for their reliability, which, in those cases, is rather questionable. Also, there are several leveles of guarantee, sometimes it's neccessary to send the laptop to Lenovo instead of having the fix in our house. That makes it even more tiresome. I've been working on several older ThinkPads, for about 2 years on T530 and I had no issue with it, even though it was several years old. I hope Lenovo gets back on the track with the quality of their stuff asap :/
The good news is since the motherboard replacement my laptop has been working flawlessly, so I'm hoping that my experience was just a fluke and not reflective of the quality of these machines.
@@SebisRandomTech Well, like I mentioned, my privete experience shows that this case was not unique. I've lost an argument of ThinkPad being a super reliable laptop since so many units had to have thieir motherboards replaced...
That may be, but it's still a much larger barrier to repair than simply unplugging the broken port and plugging a new one in, especially for newcomers who may not be skilled with a soldering iron.
What i have seen is that Lenovo has bad quality control..for eg even my ThinkPad P14s AMD has weird issues, like touchpad not working on alternative power shutdown/restart, which also persists to the bios Then I need to power off again and start to get the touchpad working And also sleep consumes a bit more battery like 1% per hr on s3/linux sleep Means in 2-3 days rip battery when in suspend
I had to get my motherboard replaced twice because of a failure of the USBC Thunderbolt port. The first replacement did not work, and after much chasing they offered to replace the motherboard a second time. This is truly a poor design choice.
Sorry for such a random comment but do you think the ThinkPad X260 will last another 4-5 years for university? My X260 got i7-6600U, 16GB of RAM, 480GB of Samsung SSD, 1080p IPS display
It depends on what you'll be using it for. If you'll be doing basic notetaking, web browsing, office work, etc then it should more than suffice for the next few years. If you need to do any resource intensive work then you might want to look into something a little more powerful.
Glad to see this video and honoured I was able to contribute! Looking forward to our next chance to collaborate.

both is very similar and got amd ryzen 5 chipset, but E15 got better speaker while L15 handle heat better.
Great video, thanks for the long term review!
7:35 It probably *does* use PWM, but at a much higher frequency, as to not get picked up by cameras.
I'm baffled at that performance, it's so good! Much better than my 6 year old desktop for sure
Agreed, it’s impressive how far computers have advanced. Now imagine if they put a Ryzen processor in there!

Would you say there's a better thinkpad for this for video editing? I was looking at a T480 before this, but it seems like Thinkpads in general aren't specifically suited for editing.
Take a look at the P series. The P15 and P17 use much more powerful CPUs and beefier GPUs that are better suited for editing.
Really enjoy your videos. Got me to buy a couple of thinkpads to tinker with. Are you planning on making any more videos?

4:28- rocking a first generation X1 carbon! 4 of them

4:3 - It's like a classic TV! Plenty of room to get stuff done.
5:4 - Productivity masterpiece. 1280 x 1024 is perfection
16:10 - Okay, we get it.
Got it.

It says under the network menu connection connected but no internet
This is a chronic problem with the nano's I am told.
First time when the machine was 10 months old and the second time on the last day of warranty (1 year)
I'm quite upset and disappointed with the quality. Even my old 15,000 baht cheaper acer laptop doesn't give me any problem at all. But at least it works fine now.
Yep, I was disappointed with how quickly mine failed but it’s been working fine ever since, and like I said it isn’t rare for a few units to fail early on when a product is produced on such a large scale.
yeah I'll stick with my T430. great review as always
As I said in the video I always find myself gravitating back towards that model despite its age. It's such a solid machine. I do like the X1 Nano for the most part despite its shortcomings.
Ah, the cards at the end. Very clever!
@@SebisRandomTech At times when nano is idling, sometimes windows does its thing and CPU usage may get to 50%.. temp hits 90+ celsius.
@@red16m That's odd, I've never had any thermal issues that bad with mine. Must be the luck of the draw unfortunately...

This was back in _august._
After emailing them over tens of times over so many months, it finally seems to be going somewhere. But they aren't even replacing it or refunding - I'm just sending it to them so they can confirm the missing graphics card. After _eight months._
Really nice video! 👍 I hope your thinkpad will stay a reliable friend for you!
12:27 I can't take it. What kind of jerk sets a laptop outside on a bridge. Then makes sure the background has the only set of rails that are 1.5"-2" higher than the rest?
The kind of jerk who enjoys putting laptops in precarious places for fun :)
@@SebisRandomTech LOL.
Still worth it in 2024? I can find gen 1 under $500, also considering V14, but the display and charging is better with the nano

In your opinion is the keyboard easily replaceable for this machine? I can order a replacement keyboard but I would need to disassemble the laptop in order to do it and I'm not sure I'm confident in doing that.
I haven't taken out the keyboard, but it may be easier to replace the entire palmrest/keyboard assembly than just the keyboard itself.

The X270 wouldn't be a bad option for your needs and price range, plus as you said with the swappable batteries it can last a long time away from an outlet.

@@SebisRandomTech It'd be somewhat a dream come true. Classic Thinkpad design with much more modern internals.
1kg Carbon laptops are great, I just wish there was a 15 inch one
The X1 Extreme/P1 are as close as we'll get to that, for now.
I know its late, but de-soldering those ports is not hard.
That may be, but it's still a much larger barrier to repair than simply unplugging the broken port and plugging a new one in, especially for newcomers who may not be skilled with a soldering iron.
sorry but, not everyone is skilled at soldering like you plus it wouldn't cost much to make the USB-C detachable

I bet the problem was a bad soldered on ram
What i have seen is that Lenovo has bad quality control..for eg even my ThinkPad P14s AMD has weird issues, like touchpad not working on alternative power shutdown/restart, which also persists to the bios
Then I need to power off again and start to get the touchpad working
And also sleep consumes a bit more battery like 1% per hr on s3/linux sleep
Means in 2-3 days rip battery when in suspend
I had to get my motherboard replaced twice because of a failure of the USBC Thunderbolt port. The first replacement did not work, and after much chasing they offered to replace the motherboard a second time. This is truly a poor design choice.
