but are you satisfied with th keyboard ? Is it also so slick as in T490 ? And what about half-size arrow keys - I cannot stand using them on my T490. If they don't restore it to full size, I will switch all units back to Dells in my company.

    Constructive criticism
Josh your chanel is growing and I've been here for a while. I'd love to see more text on screen that helps the person stay engaged
You can see why that also helps in crowd retention as well if u do some searches here and there
You might as well even watch how LTT does their text edits. And also would love if u change the way you organize your tests for the viewer and present them
Some times more information is less

My ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 (yes Gen 1) from 2012 is still showing no signs of giving up ghost (recently replaced cooling fan and upgraded SSD). I don't do video editing or gaming so it serves me just fine. Every year I say "Maybe this is the year... " but the thing just won't die Lol. I may still retire it at some point and use it as a music and media server. I have my eye on the new Yoga Titanium and Gen6 X1 Yoga!

@@JustJoshTech Good review. I was actually looking at this laptop as a dev machine. How feasible is it for that with the i7 and 32 GB of RAM (backend java dev, enterprise apps, docker, microservices etc). I really want a Ryzen, and I found the one you recommended, the Yoga Slim 7 Pro with a Ryzen 5900HX, but with 16 GB of RAM soldered, and I feel that is not enough as a dev machine. How would you think these 2 would compare, and how would the X1 Carbon Gen 9 hold up as main dev machine. Pretty hard to decide, with flaws on all sides

Maybe because the 4k panel supports more brightness it was consuming less power at equal brightness. Also, the latest processors are so powerful that they can render 4k content without consuming much more compared to fullHD. It would be interesting to see if this is the case with AMD cpus as well.

  • @FelixHartmannmtb
    @FelixHartmannmtb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The problem with this review is that the power consumption for office work / programming on the UHD+ must be much higher due to tiger lake being very inefficient in that field vs FHD. I tested around quite a lot on a LG Gram 16 with the 1165g7, and while watching video the resolution practically doesn't matter. However for surfing, typing in notepad++ or microsoft office if I decrease the resolution from 2560x1600 to 1280x800 I get about 30% higher battery life.
I do believe that IGZO panels don't matter about resolution anymore for power consumption, in many cases higher resolution panels even consuming less, because they have a much higher budget to produce them as they sell for a premium. And tiger lake is really efficient on video playback, plus resolution then kinda depends on the video only, not on the screen it's played back fullscreen. Actually it's clearly now the CPU that is burning through your battery. NVME with HIPM/DIPM activated, the display panel and so on are really efficient. The lg gram 16" idles at 1.8w with usably low screen brightness. it only goes up to around 4.3w on max luminance. So I guess the display panel uses about 0.5w to 3w per hour depending on brightness. However while surfing or productivity work I get 6-7 watt power consumption at low brightness. Hence for seemingly easy tasks the CPU will consume a lot of power. Actually Kaby Lake R and Comet Lake were much better in this regard. Ice Lake a disaster and tiger lake just improved on Ice lake.
I feel for intel we need to wait for Alder lake to get good actual battery life outside of watching videos. So the lg gram caneasily playback video in edge via wifi for 20-25 hours with good brightness if the videos are long enough - because as soon as you leave fullscreen and scroll around or watch many short clips it consumes more power (around 250 I guess, 80%) thanks to the efficient screen. But for work I only get about 12-14 hours. And well that is with that big 80wh battery. Apple M1 shows that office work or watching video is no difference. Same for smartphones. Intel needs to catch up here. and they announced so for Alder lake. Those numbers are with optimized windows meaning services not needed disabled, throttlestop optimizing and so on...
Oh yeah and I would guess i5 needs maybe 5-10% less power than i7. So I will exchange my lg gram with i7 to an lg gram with i5 processor (my lg gram came with defective hardware - so I have to exchange anyhow so I will just return and reorder with i5).

Buying a Windows laptop is SO hard. There’s a lot of options and a lot of pros and cons. I discovered this channel looking for the best 13.3 or 14 inch laptop I could buy for my sister for no more than $600 and I ended up getting a deal in a Dell Inspiron 14 5000 with the 11th gen i5, 512GB NVMe SSD and Intel Iris Xe graphics for $529 + TAX (regular price is like $700).

I have been wondering whether to change laptop recently as the display on my ThinkPad P43s is a basic 14in 250 nits FHD display which ruins the experience if you are mobile with it (though the anti glare on it makes it work better than some 300 nit glossy screens in bright light). @blazbohinc4964 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    TL:DR
i5 and i7 doesn't mean anything anymore - look at core count and frequency differences, see what the GPU is. Decide based on that
Anything up to 15 inches 1080p or 1440p, 1440p or 4k for 17 inches. I've tried all possible configs because I'm a system tester. If you're gaming, 1080p or 1440p screen. 4k is too difficult to run, and downscaling isn't optimal.
4k screens are about 2-3 times as power hungry as 1080p screens, and GPU load is increased.. So be ready to suffer a 30% battery life drop just for that alone.

Two days of browsing the web wrapped up in a 10 minute video. Crazy good work, Josh!
Only wish I found this earlier 😂.
Can you say how "bad" the reflections really are with the UHD Screen? I'm a programmer and heavy Excel user and always didn't really get along with just one 14" (16:9) laptop screen. Hoping to get more productive with a higher res screen. In the other hand I'm a little worried about the reflections, though.
What do you think of the X1 Yoga G6? Already tested one? I was thinking about getting this instead of the carbon mainly for touchscreen and entertainment purposes. What do you think?
Btw: Just an idea on how to separate cpu and display within the battery drain test: Run a similar test with only an external monitor / no internal display.

    • @akabukiman
      @akabukiman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@bora8254 Yep, did buy a Gen 6 X1 Yoga. After all the 4K Screen is definitely the way to go. Reflections are at least to my eyes almost less disturbing compared to a matte screen. The anti-reflective coating is really doing it's job here. When I compare it to my wife's Surface Pro 7, I can see far less disturbing reflections on my X1 Yoga.
Here is why I wrote "After all"...
The first Yoga instantly went back to Lenovo because the touchscreen didn't work properly. No scrolling possible, ghost touches, etc.
The second Yoga arrived about 4 weeks later. It seemed ok at first being much better than the first one. After some weeks of usage I noticed the touchscreen wouldn't recognize every single touch in some areas, especially the edges, which prevented me from using it at all when browsing the web. Took Lenovo around two more weeks to switch the panel, since they did not offer a second full replacement though. The replacement panel came with calibration unfortunately and had a really bad yellowish tint to it. Fixed it myself with windows color calibration. Really happy now. Great device in the end 🤗

    Hey Josh!
About that AMD vs Intel, idk about the video editing part but, I've actually tabulated around 35 games running on the Ryzen 7 5700U and the i7 1165G7. Even I considered the Iris Xe iGPU to be better than the AMD Radeon iGPU, but the new 5000 series really overthrows the intel tigerlake. Idk if its due to better processing power or the GPU but I actually got 10 to 20 Frames more in the ryzen than the i7 on similar settings. Tho it was equal in some games like Forza Horizon and CSGO but still, overall ryzen fared much better. and honestly speaking, pricewise the 5700u is closer to the i5 1135G7 than the i7.
What do u think about this??

Since I intend to keep my laptop for at least five years, I always try to go for the best specs I can - especially now that everything is always soldered on. i7-1165G7 and 32 GB RAM I've already decided on, but I keep going back and forth on the display. I adore matte displays, but I'm also definitely the kind of person who'll cram as much as possible on there. I assumed I'd prefer the FHD because battery life is so important to me, but the difference is so small...
Why can't they have a matte 4K option!

4k doesn't really matter too much on a laptop display imo. Even my 1080p 24" monitor is plenty sharp enough

Wait for the gen 10, it will have a 2k+ matte display.

As others said, 4k has marginal improvement on 14" screens - that extra money will be better spent elsewhere.
And about the difference being small in this video: there are a number of variables to consider. The i7 may have helped reduce overall power consumption for example, because more capable processors generally don't need to run as much as less capable processors.

Hey Josh, I had your site up waiting for the new video. I've been following you for sometime. You make fantastic reviews. I would like to ask you to review 15/15.6" laptops and provide recommendations for what to buy. I was going to buy the Lenovo Ideapad 5 15" last year after you gave it a terrific review, but it sold out globally. I have literally been waiting for you to recommend a 15/15.6" since then. I am REALLY hanging out for it. I have a 5 year old budget laptop that is slow and freezes, and takes ages to boot up. It's driving me crazy. I live in Australia, so I have to translate your recommendations to Australian models, and what can be sourced locally. We don't have the prices and range you guys in the US have.
Hope you can help me out soon. Cheers Mate. Peter.

Josh, thank you for the detailed review. I do have a question though. I have x1 carbon 7th gen with 10th gen i7 and a 4K display, and I feel the general lag when using chrome(scrolling, etc). It seems like a common issue among other 4k users, but I was wondering if you experience matches with mine. Can you tell us the performance on chrome compared to FHD model?

    Hi Josh,
A great video as always - there’s just no one else doing reviews in that depth including graphs and details as you do.
I never really thought about getting a 4K but after this video I immediately checked the PSREF... just to find that you missed one very important aspect:
There is no touch version of the 4k Display available in the X1 carbon gen 9.
This might not concern you but I for my part don’t want to go back to pre-touch.
The only way to get touch and 4k would be the X1 yoga.
This should deserve at least a mention in such a comparison.
    Cheers!

I need your advice I am attending college for my bachelor's degree For Computer and Information Science. light programming will be involved. I was thinking about 3 laptops, all 17 inch.
    1. HP 17.3 inch FHD (1920 X 1080) laptop with Intel core i5-1135G7, 12GB Ram, 512GB SSD and integrated Intel Xe Graphics for $630.
    2. HP Envy 17.3 FHD (1920x1080) Touch-Screen laptop with Intel Core i7-1165G7, 12GB RAM, 512 SSD + 32GB Intel Optane with intel integrated Xe graphics for $1073
    3. Dell Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 17" QHD (2560x1600 resolution) touch screen laptop with Intel Core i7-1165G7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD + 32GB Intel Optane with Nvidia GeForce MX350 for $1241.99.
Keep in mind that the RAM on the Dell laptop is soldered to the motherboard, so is non upgradeable. The HP laptops more memory can be added later. Is it worth it to spend the extra money or should I just go with the cheapest one for $630?

Highly informative. Thank you. Sadly, I now know a lot more but am just as unclear as before as to which screen to go with, whether to get the news Dell XPS 17" i7 laptop with the FHD+ non-touch matte screen or the UHD+4k touch glossy screen. So confused, so many factors to way. I don't do gaming or video/music editing, or for that matter much spreadsheet work, but I do work from home, with some mobile, and I do spend long hours online 5-7 days per week and frequent on and off evenings and weekends, normal stuff, including lots of streaming of stock quotes, youtube reviews (and movies), Internet searches and research, that sort of thing. Any suggestions to help me decide? It's a tough one. Dell does say their UHD+ screen does have ant-reflective treatment of some kind though I've heard it really doesn't do much.

@@lohbut2 I actually haven't made the purchase yet. Put it off. May within the next few months. I did notice that the big discounted prices around the start of the year are gone, and even the 2021's are priced higher now than then, almost as much as the new 2022's now. Oh well. One thought. I had thought the 2022's might greatly increase the battery life, making getting the 4k screen an easier decision, but best I can tell, though the chips in the new 2022's are improved, battery life apparently is not. Oh well again.

@@lohbut2 Don't know if you'll see this, it has been almost a year, but I still haven't bought the new laptop yet but am about to. Care to share your experiences, good and bad, with the choice you made? And here's an update about what I am trying to decide about in case you have any added thoughts about any of it: Maybe you can share some updated thoughts regarding the choice I am facing here in 2023. I am going to get the Dell XPS 17 9730 with the Intel gen 13 i7 chip (maybe the i5), the 4050 or 4060 graphics card (leaning towards 4060 though don't know if I need that), 16GB RAM and 512GB SSDI (both upgradeable), and Windows 11 home. Am torn between the FHD+ or the 4k UHD+ display (leaning towards the 4k HUD+). I would like the better battery life of the FHD+, but everything else seems to suggest the 4k UHD+ display. I notice in some 15" display comparisons that the clarity of the 4k is much greater, no little lines seen as with the FHD+ in the close up shots. And I'm thinking there might be an even bigger difference in the 17" displays. I do not do gaming or video or music editing, just a lot of normal stuff online, streaming stock quotes and charts, streaming movies, many chrome tabs open, youtube while other things stream in the background that I click back and forth between often, and long hours 7 days a week on the laptop. And though it will be plugged in the majority of the time, I am expecting to do more mobile going forward, not most but more than in the past. I could save a lot of money getting the gen 13 i5, the 4050 and the FHD+, but the sweet spots seems to be the gen 13 i7, either the 4050 or 4060, and the 4k UHD+ display. Help.
I'd welcome your or anyone's thoughts on any of this. I'm pretty set on the i7, but the 4050 (with 6 cores) and the 4060 (with 8 cores) is my biggest question mark. I wonder for instance if the 4060 is even necessary for my use cases, I'm thinking what I do is more single core activity than multi core so the jump from 6 to 8 cores may be irrelevant to me, and that maybe the 4050 might run cooler and get better battery life, with almost similar or similar performance for my use cases. Any thoughts on the 4050 vs 4060 choice, and the FHD+ vs 4k UHD+, when it comes to the larger 17" display size?
