    Perfect considerations.
I'm totally in love with the 14m2 base (10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD). I found the NEW base M2 pro for €200 more than the refurbished m1 pro (a bargain!). I was coming from an intel 2017, so I had to choose between m1 pro and m2 pro.
I was initially influenced by the various negative reviews, then i realized that which made no sense to me. The slower SSD compared to the previous model is not a tragedy, both because it is still very fast and responsive, and because the faster speed of the previous model would ONLY be noticed if you transferring a very huge amounts of data to an external SSD (or from an external SSD) that was faster than the internal SSD... which NEVER happens!
On the other hand, performances has definitely improved.
I did a final cut export test using m1 pro 14" 10 core and m2 14" 10 core. One hour and 36 minutes of video, 4K prores: masks and various effects applied. Export completed about 40 minutes with m1 pro (very good result) and 26 minutes with m2 pro (amazing result)! Honestly, I don't know why this difference, but the result is this.
    Maybe even better render times.
For me nothing else is needed. The rest is just the bulls*t.

why dont you get the air for the thin macbooks that you miss? you mean thin AND pro? See thats not ideal, stuffing power into a thin chassis.. hence the heating and performance issues of some of the past models, or some other aspect has to be sacrificed like battery life.

Today i just bought the Macbook Pro 14" M2 Pro chip 1TB 16GB [CPU 12 cores, GPU 19] . I bought it because it was really a steal deal from where i came from. its only cost around 1600$ if i converted to USD. Tomorrow my first Mac will arrive at my door step. i hope everything goes well for me and my experience.

Here comes the dilemma. M1 pro 14. vs M2 pro 14 - for a 300 euro difference in Europe. I don't have a super demanding workflow but I want to keep my MacBook for many years.

The M1Pro is a great machine, and as I say at the end of my video, you get 90% of the M2Pro. If money is not the real issue, than the M2 will have longer software support and better battery. In both cases you do not go wrong

  • @zoltanzana

Great machine, but I prefer the 16” because of its larger battery, you will get more of that stunning mini led display, better speakers, no thermal throttling. I have been using it for some time and I can assure everyone it is not heavy at all, the perfect size for pro users.

For me, over the last 30 years, 13 inch is too small for a laptop, 15 inch is great but no good for portability and so.... 14 inch is ideal. And then, we all need tons of performance, but we also want good battery life!! HERE is the problem that up until now has been unsolved. I have a M1 Mac Book Air base model - the performance & battery life are record breaking for a laptop!!. .. but I need equivalent performance to my desktop (iMac).... it looks like the 14" MB Pro is what I need, I will buy one this month.

I really wish Apple didn't weld the SSD to the computer :/ Sometimes new macbooks out of no where will send 9 to 12 volts straight to the SSD, completely frying it, and destroying the computer as a whole since the SSD is welded to it. The worst part is, since a computer that has had this happen doesn't start up, Apple has often refused to cover this massive engineering flaw under warranty, making it a total loss for anyone who does not have Apple Care +.
So long story short, if you buy this computer (which is still a great computer) or any other MacBook, purchasing Apple Care + is an absolute must.

Anyone using such old models and upgrading to m2? Thoughts? only advantage of the old one its it being thin...how about weight...has it become a nuisance and something we just got to get used to?

  • @slalomie

One thing to add is Apple raised battery replacement prices on March 1 2023 in the US. Now it costs $249 USD to get the 14 and 16 Pro batteries replaced. 3-years of AppleCare+ for the 14 Pro is $279 USD. I’m sure that’s a coincidence 😂 It could be worth it to get the extended warranty then get the battery replaced before the 3-year mark.

Actually M1 Pro 10C is even sligthly better than M2 Pro 10C at multicore testing (something like 12040 vs 12010). It is because M1 Pro 10C has more performance core than M2 Pro (8 vs 6). At single core, M2 Pro is better.

I was heavily contemplating the 14 or 16 inch pro this year but have to say, especially after this video, for somebody who edits a couple short videos a week, I'm going to go with the MacBook Air this round. I won't be saving much time considering 90% of my work is online and I'm looking forward to better portability. Hello, new subscriber here.
I haven’t had a laptop in over 10+ years but need one now that I’m doing more photography related travel.
I’m interested in this one with 1 TB of storage and 32GB Ram (I think apple has a new name for it, lol).
    My questions:
    (1) would opting for the next higher level of GPU and CPU cores be overkill and/or a waste of $?
I’m not a gamer but want to avoid the spinning wheel of death at all costs when several apps are open ( e.g. Ps, Lr, Nikon Raw editor, and various 3rd party software like Topaz, Nik, Portraiture; and also want to get into video editing eventually.
    (2) can this machine be used with a mouse or a stylus pen? I was never good at editing on a track pad.
    Enjoyed your video. Thank you.

Yes, the base model of this year has only 1 SSD of 512 GB which makes it indeed slower (not much, but it is slower) than the base model of 2021 with 2 SSDs of 256 GB each. This does not apply to the upgraded models. But, I should have mentioned it. As far as the notch is concerned, as long as Netflix is not producing a horror series called “The Notch”, I would not be to afraid

    • @olofsan
      @olofsan ปีที่แล้ว

@@DionMedia ah yes that is true. the numbers i have seen say the 2023 ssds read speeds are 50% slower than the 2021 ones. id call half the speed much slower. not what i expect for paying higher prices. this problem should not exist.
i meant apps with massive menus on top which wont fit on the left side of the notch. afraid of apps looking absolutely terrible. the dell xps can fit a webcam in a slim bezel for example. also im used to my OP7TPro since 2019 so every notch or punchhole is very weird for me.
hehe yeah sounds more like a documentation.

@@DionMedia ,Oh, Dion, thanks for taking the time to reply. Highly appreciated. I know its kinda big investment but hoping it's worth. The reason for going MAX are its 2 video encoders. I'm happy with the 30 GPU instead of 38. However, someone else suggested that long term use relies on greater RAM (say 64GB) instead of getting extra SSD storage. As I don't work 3D, graphics or 8K video (for now), I thought that 32GB ram provides a sufficient future-proof configuration for Final Cut for the next 6 or 7 years. • @DionMedia
      @DionMedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Anthony, thanks for your comment and I appreciate you are following me. I will dive a bit deeper into this topic. You know your argument is part of a much wider debate. One of the arguments used by those companies who produce leather cases is that they use the byproduct of another (meat) industry and that therefor the leather used in leather cases is not the result of animals killed for the purpose of producing cases. I think this is a rather solid point. There are also Apple vegan leather cases. But, as said, I will get a bit deeper into this topic myself. I am no vegan, but just like most I do not tolerate animal abuse. Your argument will of course be that the whole meat industry is animal abuse, a point which to a large extent is true.

Sorry. I feel like these kinds of comments are not necessary. Everyone's different and everyone has the right to do what they want. He seems like chill person and is one of very few TH-camrs that I like watching for tech reviews.
Let people do what they want without you having to tell them that their choice to use animal product is wrong. You don't have to tell everyone your beliefs. Keep them to your self. Also, I'm not saying that you are not going to educate anyone about animal crudity and what you believe, you should BUT there is time for everything.
We need animals and animals need us. Not trying to bash you or anything but just wanted to make you think about that. 😊

Did you compare the entry level M1 Pro with 8/14c to the entry level M2 Pro 10/16c chip? Because that basically makes no sense. I am currently at the situation that 16GB ram is NOT a good recommendation for creative professionals because the unified memory quickly fills up once you pre render video footage. I need to swap out my 2021 M1Pro 16GB ram with a 2023 M2Pro with 32GB ram. Comparing the higher end M1 pro 10/16 with the entry level M2 pro 10/16 literally gives no performance gain. For the end user, it is basically the same chip for the same price with just a different name on it. Only the ports were improved on the 2023 model. Price is also the same if not a little more expensive. #Apple for invisible upselling - removing the cheap option and offering more expensive options that are at least 250$ each. Only the much more expensive M2 Pro with 12/19c will give the advertised 20% performance gain, which sounds like a "better chip selection with more functional cores" to me.
