Yeah, this absolutely boggled my mind. The contrast between the artist’s seemingly uncoordinated, simple hand movements, and the result of those movements in the painting is jarring. This is what happens when you observe light programmatically!
Totally mind boggling, a few brush strokes, a few colours and it looks almost like a tiny photograph! The brain would just add the few details that aren't captured. I hope the tire shop gets a print of this masterpiece, because it's way toooo awesome to stay hidden in a sketchbook. :D
Love this. Have not yet experimented in gouache yet- always been stuck in acrylics! But more and more artists around me tend to be drifting towards it and I can see the appeal! This inspires me to do some field pieces around my area! Thank you for sharing and crafting this content.
Absolutely fantastic. Love the bits of history, business philosophy, slice of life stuff you capture, on top of producing an excellent painting. Ive always been a fan of that kind of observational recording of what some people might consider mundane / uninteresting. Its these everyday interactions that end up defining a lot of our lives. Great work James !
The face was incredible I mean not only it's a face but you captured his expression very well this is impressive also I wasn't too sure about how you painted his uniform but you seem to have the big picture before all of us it came out really well 😊
This is too funny! I was watching a variety of you videos and suddenly you are at my family’s business painting on location! My dad started that business in the early 60s. I worked there for 10 years doing the same job as Greg. Seeing you paint from the waiting area is a real pleasure. Thanks for sharing. Your talent is amazing. You find interest and beauty in everyday life 👏
Either the quarantine is getting to me or I do actually see a phone booth with a Superman outfit in the background... 3:28 ! Always amazes me to see the simplicity of a Zorn palette create such interesting paintings. Well done.
James, you CRUSHED this one, high and deep over everything in center field. Great subject choice! It's so mundane, so everyday that we forget what we're even looking at. People hurry into repair shops, burdened with schedules and deadlines, unable to relax or enjoy the simplicity of their surroundings, so anxious to get going, back to the grind they complain so much about. Rarely does anyone bother attempting a sketch, let alone a painting of a waiting area at an auto repair shop. Very few artists are so equipped and ready to throw down and paint everywhere they go. Thanks for this "simple" demonstration of what can be done if you don't quit on your passion.
I know this is a few months old but as someone who stopped doing art for a year or so and lost my passion - finding out you have a bustling channel and seeing how you narrate your process - it's lit such a fire in me it's insane. Thank you so much for this honest-to-God gift
Tire shops are an awesome place to paint. Lots of weird fun shapes... Lots of people waiting most times. A lot like the airport. 😊 Happy to see you supporting a locally-owned one. Greg seems to be a chill guy. I always enjoy your limited palette videos. Can do a lot with a few colors. Especially with paint. 😊 It's good for the young ones to see that you don't need every color a company makes.
Just so love America even if it is a fractured place. "C'mon lets do a painting while I wait for my tire to be fixed " - wow that is attitude and shows why America is such a great country. There are teachers and artists. Some artists, not many are great teachers. You James are both a good artist and great teacher.
The gouache man and his mousetraps. :) Everytime I see you turn the mundane and overlooked trappings of everyday activities into art, it confirms the fact that I am not a real artist and my choice in career wasn't in vain. I'm a Xerox color copy machine. 😊
i always found that my faces came out better when i painted them than when i drew them in pencil and then painted them. now i see why that is!! thank you!!
OMG ! I stared at the finished painting for lil over an hour trying to understand the layering and shades in my own way. Learnt a lot . Thank you very very much , I am a better artist now than I was an hour ago.
It's amazing to actually hear and see someone else's understanding of the intimacy of places and people you see everyday. Because I think every artist understands it but it's just so much more interesting to see how that understanding effects not just the art, but also the process of making it.
I really like the 10-12 minute video’s much better than the shorter ones. Watching the painting come together with more of the details is so enjoyable.
Back then, I always thought that painting with big brushes on smaller papers is a scary thing, but James gives me courage to just paint on the paper with big brushes and I'm glad I'm learning.
I dabbled in watercolors because I liked the type of atmosphere they create, but watching you paint with opaque colors is inspiring! I know I may not make a living out of it, but artists like you inspire me to take it up for my own enjoyment in my spare time, creating detail and capturing likeness so well must come with many years of study and practice. Glad I found your channel!
NOW I see a reason to paint these little fugitive type sketchbook paintings. It’s something fun to do while you are stuck somewhere waiting! AND I don’t want to needle point, or do crossword puzzles.
I’m not a painter but just getting to see an artist at work is so fascinating, and also learning about a place I’ve never been to. It’s also an exercise in appreciating framing and color scheme.
Man. I’ve always been a draw/paint at home person. I pull of reference on my phone or computer and go from that. But, James, through watching your videos a desire to go out and draw/paint the living world as it exists in the moment has really begun in me. I’ve only recently begun experimenting and learning Gouache as a medium. Your works and enthusiasm is a big influence on making going out of my comfort zone appealing and inviting. Thanks for that.
I think your sketch came out wonderfully well. I was glad that you were able to work in Greg. You achieved a nice likeness with an expert economy of stroke. It's typically a joy to watch you bring a sketch to life, and this one was no exception. I don't think you mentioned how long it took, which I would be interested to know. It's nice when you cleverly include a timepiece alongside the sketch in progress. Thank you!
I think it was about two hours. We stayed quite a while after the car was ready. The guys thought that was funny, because no one ever wants to stay longer.
Another brilliant, helpful and interesting video that also showcases a lovely piece of art. These break down painting into simple and encouraging steps, whilst still teaching new things. Thank you so much!
Me gusta como tiene esta técnica tan impresionante de pintar y tener esa visión fotográfica.James Gurney es para mi de los artista más impresionantes que he visto.
This makes me smile. I think we may have known some of the same people doing backgrounds for animation. But what a treat it is to watch you paint. I had a similar experience last Spring 2023, as a gentleman walked into my scene, I asked him to pose… in 5 minutes we were done and he wanted to by the painting. I admire your relaxed, personable disposition. I wish I found your channel sooner. Best wishes!
If you touch dried gouache with water, it'll be activated again; if you mix different colors on top, it may get muddy. I believe casein, once dried, will not be activated by water again. So here he could wipe with a damp cloth to expose the casein underpainting.
Yes, exactly as Yi Hua said below. It gives me a more sealed layer. I could have used a thin layer of Acryla Gouache, matte acrylic, or tinted gesso just as well. Careful, though not to build up a layer that's too glossy or thick, or else the gouache will bead up on it and not adhere well.
This is one of my favourite videos on here - what an incredible talent. How you make everyday activities like going to work in a tyre shop seem so much more interesting! And that face! You nailed his character in a handful of tiny strokes! 😍
I need to try this out! Thank you for showing the exact colors you're using. I tried this with watercolor without much like, but wonder if the opaqueness of gouache will make the difference.
Very inspiring, love your work it always amazes me. Right now I'm learning watercolor with your techniques and I'm loving it can't wait to get to the Gouache lessons, I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for all your work and videos!!!
Hi James... you are the best! I really enjoy your work and your style. I've just started reading your book "color and light", really looking forward to it.
Thank you for showing the errors as well, like going too far with the ceiling lights past the wall. Helpful and encouraging to know that it happens to everyone, and you can recover !
Thanks James, this was great! I think Zorn actually snuck a little blue onto his palette occasionally, but putting on some limits is a great learning experience. Thanks for pointing me this way.
Great video! Especially enjoyed the part about the figure and face. It was amazing how you captured the likeness with relatively few strokes of the brush. I always thought the Zorn pallette seemed kind of boring, but thinking of it as a region in color space makes it seem like an interesting challenge.
I'm amazed on how you achieved likeness of his face with just a few brush strokes... Thanks for sharing!
Exactly. It looks like magic. I know it comes after years of practice, but still...
He’s truly a master at plein air painting.
Yeah, this absolutely boggled my mind. The contrast between the artist’s seemingly uncoordinated, simple hand movements, and the result of those movements in the painting is jarring. This is what happens when you observe light programmatically!
I was just going to type the same thing! Yes, amazing!
Totally mind boggling, a few brush strokes, a few colours and it looks almost like a tiny photograph! The brain would just add the few details that aren't captured.
I hope the tire shop gets a print of this masterpiece, because it's way toooo awesome to stay hidden in a sketchbook. :D
What a privilege to watch and listen to a truly great artist at work.
this is my reaction anytime I am watching guy changing my wheels
You make it look so easy. I love your style. I Haven’t picked up my paints in years. You make me want to.
do it! just for the fun of it :DD
Well, do it ;) A HUG from Puebla, MÉXICO 💜🌌🌱🌎🇲🇽✌🏽(: !!
The short interviews of the owner and employee make for a human touch to the artwork and backstory.
Love this. Have not yet experimented in gouache yet- always been stuck in acrylics! But more and more artists around me tend to be drifting towards it and I can see the appeal!
This inspires me to do some field pieces around my area! Thank you for sharing and crafting this content.

Only you can make an uninspiring drywall and cardboard office look beautiful!
I love the "that came out of my tire?!" jar, it seems like a fun painting exercise all by itself!
Your style and approach to painting is amazing, so inspiring to all of us. You really make gouache look like magic

Yep, you do. Coolest tire shop ever.
You are incredibly gifted Mr Gurney!! I'm full of admiration, I love your painting!
Thank you very much!

James Gurney you are most remarkable qouachepainter! And i have learned very much from you painting videos and your books. Thank you very much!

7:37 - it was a privilege to observe, how easy and fast You grasped that resemblance and all facial features. Damn, You're good! 🙏🙏🙏
You capture Americana in it's beautiful endearing self. I'm buying this video now James. Thanks!!
Thanks you, Gerald. Hope you enjoy it!
I love watching you work. Your openness is very refreshing to a person like myself that is so uptight in creating their art. Thanks
NOW I see a reason to paint these little fugitive type sketchbook paintings. It’s something fun to do while you are stuck somewhere waiting! AND I don’t want to needle point, or do crossword puzzles.
Another great video. There's something about Greg that I like. He seems really nice.
He's a super nice guy with a fun sense of humor.
Greg must love that painting. So very few of us get to own an actual portrait of ourselves
I’m not a painter but just getting to see an artist at work is so fascinating, and also learning about a place I’ve never been to. It’s also an exercise in appreciating framing and color scheme.
thats an incredible painting, they you just added Greg into it was so easy. Excellent job !

La capacidad de observación, sintesis y técnica es increible! Saludos desde San Juan, Argentina.
You captured Greg completely.
James you're the best. Love your work and Thank you for sharing so much of yourself.
It's easy to paint a scene, it is a heck harder to paint the face of a person that actually looks like that person! Respect.
Very impressive work as always. The way you effortlessly painted the face in his likeness is astonishing.
That’s one of the most badass things I’ve ever seen. Wow
I absolutely adore watching you whack in big value shapes
James is the coolest artist in town!!!
That whole video was incredibly impressive. Especially when you wiped off some of the paint to get back to the background wash. That was brilliant.
Wiping out to get the underpainting felt more like a desperation move at the time, but I'm glad it worked out OK.
I love the drama of waiting on Greg to show up. Thanks for these videos. It makes quarantine bearable.
Always a joy to watch you paint. Thanks for your valuable lessons.
So good. You got the likeness so quickly.
Blown away with how well you captured the figure! Love your videos!
This is a great example of talent vs art class
Love this video. So confident on the shadowing colors etc. Love it.
Hello James! I admire how you are able to take advantage of every opportunity to quickly draw your beautiful sketch.
This video really illustrates your skill level nicely! You captured his likeness and his character/attitude very well!
Gosh you’re amazing. You nailed his likeness.
Congratulations James, it's very nice !
Pre-liking this because I already know I'm going to love it
im not a real artist, i admit that but u inspire me on what can be achieved, thank u brother
Thank you for making a piece using my favorite limited color
Palette 🎨 😊💕
You are so fun to watch, Sir! I felt inspired to paint with gouache again while watching this. Thank you so much.
The finished piece looks very scifi, probably not what you were going for but it has a very cool feel to it!
I think your sketch came out wonderfully well. I was glad that you were able to work in Greg. You achieved a nice likeness with an expert economy of stroke. You are doing a great service to the art community, thax and please keep it up.
Awesome painting James!!!
You are are also a great communicator, thanks for the time and care you put on editing the final video, the investment on equipment, etc.
Thanks, I appreciate that!
I'm a big fan of JC Leyendecker. Studying a few pics, my color palete is so much better now.
This is so beautiful Mr Gurney...thank you.
Another brilliant, helpful and interesting video that also showcases a lovely piece of art. These break down painting into simple and encouraging steps, whilst still teaching new things. Thank you so much!

Loove your videos! I am learning digital art and still find these to be very helpful, not to mention just enjoyable to watch.
I always learn a lot from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Saw this before. Totally worth watching again.
Brilliant and such an interesting subject. I like the Zorn palette a lot.
Curious why you chose to do a casein toning underneath rather than a wash with gouache? Does it affect the handling of the gouache on top?
If you touch dried gouache with water, it'll be activated again; if you mix different colors on top, it may get muddy. I believe casein, once dried, will not be activated by water again. So here he could wipe with a damp cloth to expose the casein underpainting.
Yes, exactly as Yi Hua said below. It gives me a more sealed layer. I could have used a thin layer of Acryla Gouache, matte acrylic, or tinted gesso just as well. Careful, though not to build up a layer that's too glossy or thick, or else the gouache will bead up on it and not adhere well.
Watching James Gurney painting is like watching blackmagic...cant get my eyes off it..mesmerised...like..Jees how he is doing that...
Awesome painting! I adore these colors and the steampunk feal to it!
So amazing. Mr.Gurney es un verdadero maestro.

That face! What incredible technique. Eerie.
Wow amazing likeness "just like that" obviously years of practice. Amazing skills
Hi James... you are the best! I really enjoy your work and your style. I've just started reading your book "color and light", really looking forward to it.
Amazing every time I watch this
love it. More Greg's should be immortalised like that.
Petition for James to do a series of Greg's, immortalised 🖐️
Painting live beats a photograph any day, a photograph is never going to depict how something looks and moves in real life
I am always so impressed with your painting videos. Thanks, lots of good information to take back to my studio.
What a great likeness you got as well.
Thank you for showing the errors as well, like going too far with the ceiling lights past the wall. Helpful and encouraging to know that it happens to everyone, and you can recover !
Awesome, loved this one! Thanks for all your sharing...
I'm so glad I found you! What a pleasure to learn from you while watching you work
Awesome! Thank you!
that portrait was awesome!
Absolutely amazing! The editing, such as for the gamut on the color wheel, was so smooth ad informative!
The deliberations about artistic choices like working in situ or using photos can be summarized as the difference between gods and mere mortals...
Thanks James, this was great! I think Zorn actually snuck a little blue onto his palette occasionally, but putting on some limits is a great learning experience. Thanks for pointing me this way.
I've just found your channel and I'm falling in love with these videos! Interesting to watch, to listen, really cool style!!
Gee golly...you’re a magician Mr. Gurney, sir
Another Stellar video James!
Just amazing likeness. I hope you give him a print of it - bet he'd be tickled. Thanks for sharing your techniques. I've yet to venture into gouache.
Thanks. I gave him a print of it and he has it framed now behind his workstation.
@@JamesGurney aw 😌 love that! 🌞

You amaze me James. Very impressive. Great learning experience.
That’s a great little portrait.
