This will forever change the way I paint night scenes. I always keep the sky in my paintings dark, and most of the time by doing so I end up with a painting that looks dull, despite my attempts to put emphasis on the glow coming from artificial lights. I never thought that a sky that does not look too dark would be so effective. Thank you again for the wonderful tutorial, Mr. Gurney.
it's brilliant how it reads as late in the day simply because the building appears to be in shade and not because of the color of the sky. gonna have to keep this in mind as well :)
your art is amazing! i just subscribed! rooting for you po
Same! Its an amazing "trick"!
Mr. Gurney is one of the greatest painters right now. A treasured icon.
Mr. Gurney, your contribution to the art community is priceless. Always the Guru I've come to know online. Creator blessings to you, sir.
the Gurneys are exactly as they seem...open...engaging. very non-pretentious...and of course talented...true artists. had the pleasure of meeting at a fabulous Fantasy Art convention in Kansas city ...five years ago which now seems a century...
That’s me @ 8:48 - WOWERS!! ✨
James, thank you for answering my question on mood. Interesting perspective on leaving something out to create a feeling! Somehow that seems deep.
I’m still fan-girling. You have made my MONTH! 🤩
The greatness of your watercolor is that you always make the painting happier than reality, that is artist magic. Thank you for sharing.
James you and your videos, particularly your gouache videos, have been my comfort videos over the last few months. I've been really struggling with my mental health and watching you paint and listening to your voice has been super helpful! Thank you for your art and keep it coming :)
Thank you, sir. Painting pictures and making videos about the process has the same purpose for me.
@@JamesGurney It's very fun watching the artist of Dinotopia, a favorite from my childhood, do amazing art works and walk through his process. You're amazingly talented and a very comforting person. Keep up the wonderful artworks! I always look forward to seeing what you do next!
A joy to watch, it's like a master class every time you load a new video. Thanks, James! Great idea trying to paint a night scene from day observation, definitely going to give it a "go".
I have to agree.
I understand all the questions they ask Mr Gurney but it just comes down to the 1000s of paintungs, hours, and professional experience that he has and why he makes it look so easy. The best advice Mr Gurney said was, just go out and paint and match what you see. Its an absolute dream to have this master here and teaching his incredible gift, can you imagine if all the masters did this..Thank you James for sharing your gift you're a beast❤❤
Love Janet’s version of the alley, the dark figure pulls you, it feels like the start of a story!
This painting looks very cozy!
I love that you visited the Emerald Isle and painted back-street scenes, rather than the tourist hotspots.
Lovely painting!
Thanks for another great video and for answering our questions. I'll be sure to say hi to Aaron although you'll see him before me!
Amazing job Mr G 🎉
It was fun to see your notebook and the bizarre things you do for laughs. I do that too with my daughter. We sometimes pass the drawing back and forth and add our own ideas to it. That would be fun to see you and Jeanette do. Thanks for answering my question!
Hi James, I’ve been binge watching your videos and I love them. I have always been a hyper realistic artist only drawing in pencil and charcoal. I only drew in art school because it was my strength and it’s what gave me the best grade. Since leaving art school and “perfecting” my hyperrealism I’ve become bored. Of course drawing a 10 hour hyperrealistic piece is challenging but I’m not learning anything from it. Also my artwork is all grey scale and isn’t as exciting as I would like it to be. I’ve been picking up my watercolours I bought a couple years ago and I’ve been trying my best to create good work. I painted a piece a few months ago and it was oversaturated because I don’t understand colour tone and how to build up a painting. A few days ago I started a new painting, the difference was I used tips I had learnt from your videos. I started a base like you do and I built it up with colours and I didn’t over work it. I added my highlights and dark pen at the end and even used coloured pencils to add texture and tone. I am so pleased with how it came out. I just want to thank you. I’ve had multiple teachers try to teach me how to paint and I would always hate the process or hate the end result putting me off painting. You have actually taught me and I’ve found a new love. Once again thank you! You’re an amazing teacher. My New Years resolution is to paint more often and try urban sketching 😁
i hope someday your work ends up in art history classes!! your talent and way of teaching is beyond valuable
the way you capture these scenes and give them your own touch is nothing short of amazing. you truly are an inspiration, thank you for that
That is so gorgeous!
Greetings from Australia!
I have wanted to try gouache for years. An opportunity arose with some spoiled watercolour paper so I am into it big time and loving the medium.
Thankyou James.
fantastic... skill and imagination 💯
James, thank you and Janet for this demo and including us in your travels! You wowed us again, paint on!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for the generous gift.
Thanks for the nocturne scene, I am painting in watercolours at the moment and want to move into night scenes. Your video is a GREAT HELP
James, it is a blessing to see you paint. Your technique reminds me a lot of Magritte's Empire of Light series which juxtaposes the nature of daylight and night time and how articifial lighting has changed our perception of time. Especially up to the point before you painted the sky it looked like an illusion of night at daytime. I really enjoyed your video and I learned something new about scattered light (you are a master of explaining contrast). Thanks a lot! Enjoy your journey throughout Ireland!
Wish I could vacation in that scene. You definitely made it look inviting!
Gas. So many memories of nearly getting snotted by cars cycling to and from the art college up the road at this very point. The café must be new. It's a shame Ireland doesn't have much of a café night life - your painting really evokes what could be.
Hey, James! It’s Ann from Parker 😁 Thank you so much for your insights. Your answer to my question, along with the other thoughtful questions submitted, really makes me excited to push the envelope the next time I paint en plein air here in Colorado. We have ample sunshine, so I think some studio practice of toning those sunlit hues to evening tones is in order.🤔
Bravo, my friend! This was a wonderfully informative video. So happy you invited questions. Thank you again.
Really like how you did this. Thanks and thumbs up.
On the subject of travelling with art materials, what I do is trying to bring most of my paint in pans so it counts as solid. The few tubes I bring I place them in a plastic bag right before security and I show them in advance what it is. I never had a problem.
what an incredible painting! It somehow looks real and unreal at the same time.
Thank you for the amazing uploads, Sir gurney!
Love your works!
oh wow i lived in dun laoghaire from 2018 to 2019 and that salon wasnt even there yet lmao what a throwback, thank you so much
Artist has his own perspective on what will be the final output of the subject of front of him...For me what I feel about it and translate in different way... That approach are much and most appealing of what I really see.
Both fabulous!
Always amazing; love night time/dusky scenes with cozy lights inviting you inside…
Thank you so much, James!!! I always am amazed and learn so much in one of your tutorials. I also love Jeanette's work!!
Love all your video. Best of the best.
Your videos an absolute joy to watch, and they nourish my artists soul. Thank you for taking the time to share your paintings and process with all of us. ☺️💖
Always a delight to watch you paint
I really appreciate what are doing ...👍👍
The best color I ever seen in a long time
Hello from Colorado USA - I used to be an acrylic painter then I discovered watercolor and now I have discovered gouache and i love with it. Happy to have found your videos and look forward to more tips on advanced gouache techniques. Nice talent.
It's always mindblowing to look at *how* you paint!!! 🤯🤯🤯
Keep on keeping on, James! 👍✨
As an Artist that is new to Watercolor I heard you say that you were very aware of how wet the mixture is... and I was surprised that it looked like the mixtures looked like they had very little water, not dry brushing, but not running away from the mixing area. Like you had a wet brush, but able to lift the color without pooling it I guess. Also gouache looks like a lot of fun. Maybe cause I'm an acrylic artist. Thank you. 🥰
Lovely James! And Jeanette we’d love to see more of your work, as well!
Thanks so much!
James, your videos are just endlessly informative, this is so great❤
Excellent tutorial!
the most prolific artist I am aware of

I am always impressed by your accuracy in drawing and your mastery of painting.
you have inspired me a lot for my little TH-cam channel
thank you!!!
I love it. Thank you! I've been wondering if I should try gouache.
To the art store!
The admirer at the very beginning is so sweet. Great to include him.
Most underrated painter. He the bomb!!!
Your video production value is top notch. You combine information, fun and personality into a terrific package. The moment when you spilled the water was priceless.
You’re a really magical painter. It’s fun see your vision come to life with each stroke❗️
I love watching you paint. I learn so much from your video.
I have just purchased your book, "Color and Light". I'm so glad I finally found this book. It is very informative. Thank you for creating such a great book. Also, I'm a fan of your plein air painting. I hope someday you would visit Thailand and paint sky and sea here.
4:03 Ah, maybe that's what I'm missing in my Day for Night photography! It's always really interesting to see how artists in other mediums approach effects like DFN.
Thank you for providing the inspiration I needed!!
That was beautiful. I can imagine how much work it is to carry those things and make also the video parts. Great artist.
It’s always amazing to watch your paintings come together 😊
I love this painting. You have an excellent understanding of colour shifts (gamut )
Wonderful. I'm so happy to have watched this. 😄
Amazing outdoor work! Love your amazing drawing ! Greetings🎨🎨
Beautiful 🎉
What a gorgeous image... kudos.
James, thanks for this video, amazing work full of inspiration. Each video is a great surprise. Blessings and take care.
Thank you for showing your process, and especially for taking time to answer so many questions.
Beautiful
The greatest of all time!
Absolutely amazing! 🥰
Your works are just so beautiful, and it's inspiring all of us and not only that but we learn allot from your videos . Greetings from Romania
Colors are beautiful.
I just love your videos. Between you and Sarah Burns I was convinced to try gouache and have fallen in love. When watching all your videos I was so surprised when you were painting a landscape and I was thinking that looks so familiar and realized it was where I live in Gunnison, Colorado! I loved you even more! I’m having so much fun painting this county.Thank you for all your tips.
That shop owner should be honored to have it painted by you! :)
We had lunch there. Great homemade pasta and nice people.
@@JamesGurney I'm italian btw, so I'm honored as well :)
I love your work. I watch. I’m inspired to paint. I love day for night almost as much as I love night. I wonder if you could do a piece of something lit at night during the night. A ball field. Even a lamppost - my favorite.
I love Janette's composition and style! If she had a TH-cam channel, I would be an enthusiastic subscriber!
Amazing, as always. I am so glad you are still sharing your practice and inspiring. I admire your skill and sense of color. Best wishes.
Another great informative video💚Thank you James👍
Pretty amazing!
Pure genius!!
Amazingly beautiful as always! 🥰😍
Beautiful and informative as usual James. See you in a few days!
FANTASTIC !!!
Your wife is a great artist too. 😊
Thank you
Lovely to see you again
Out and about
What a talent you are sir.
Truly top class.
You two never fail to impress! Been waiting for an upload, and hope to see more from your trip. Something I really want to see you try is to get a cheaper set of decent alcohol markers like ohuhu markers and see you treat them like you are painting plain air. Been curious about trying it myself and can't find anyone doing it
“ top class” indeed
What a joy to watch. You provide so much information in such a pleasant manner. Master class, thank you for sharing your work and your knowledge. Heading to your channel, I have a back injury and watching you makes me feel like I'm painting along. Hopefully procedures will make that possible by Christmas. Or maybe someone can tell me how to paint laying on my side with one hand??😊
I discovered your TH-cam channel because it appeared on Instagram and a friend of mine has given me good references about you, you are a great promoter. A greeting from Spain
I love the way James engages with people while painting out and about!
Something about the way he asks random passers by what they think just communicates a healthy attitude towards critique: having an interest in the way others perceive the artwork while at the same time holding to his own artistic vision, regardless of external opinions. I think it can be a difficult balance to achieve for creators - the delicate desire to bring to life something that exists only in your own mind versus the desire to have other people respond positively to it. Too much emphasis on the former and it comes off as snobbery, too much on the latter and your art starts to feel more like advertising, changing with the ebb and flow of whatever's popular.
He's such a great role model in that regard I think: knowing his own mind while at the same time encouraging others to do the same.
I love your channel
James your watercolor and gouache paintings are amazing. I have your book. And I see that you do some oil paintings and maybe even acrylic. Could we see an example of those now and then on your channel? I would love that.
Very good.
J Hunsung is a phenomenal watercolor artist. Love his channel
So helpful. Thank you!
