I think one of the reasons why this interview is so good is because there is no audience. They never get Joel's sense of humor and make too many stupid noises
There’s really no need for an audience. They just slow everybody down while they wait for the clapping to stop. You wouldn’t get this rapidfire wit otherwise.
“Who is that?” “It’s Joel McHale!” “Oh ok!” “I was in Spy Kids 4!” “Oh yeah I remember!” “No you don’t!” “Yeah no I don’t.” These are the dialogues we need on a late night show.
It was great, but I think a large part of it was their chemistry. They get along really well and are good at both light jabs and self-deprecating humor and aren't afraid to do either in front of each other on TV. You can't really replicate this with other people. It's hilarious in part because they get along so well and understand each others' humor. *Miles* above any interviews Conan's done in the past probably decade, though.
@@Lucifronz it reminds me of between two ferns with Keanu reeves. Everything is sarcastic, the jokes are layered, situational and hilariously awkward at the same time.

I was just thinking that- there aren’t a lot of people who can take a hit and move with it and Conan is throwing some pretty sharp daggers (in good fun of course).
I’m two minutes in and this is EXACTLY the right vibe for McHale. I feel like I’m watching two masters trying to make each other laugh with insults. It’s not Don Rickles or Bob Newhart (whose Conan Needs a Friend podcast episode gave me the longest and biggest laugh of...tbh, almost all time), but this is a comedy death match and I’m here for it.
Bryan Cranston and Bill Burr are always great. But truthfully, Conan is amazing no matter who he's interviewing. He has deep friendships with damn near everyone and even when he doesn't he still manages to be super funny. Conan is a goddamn national treasure.
This interview left me feeling like I haven't checked out enough of Joel McHale's work. I started playing this while getting ready in the morning and was not ready for how hilarious it would be. Such an awesome episode. I've shared it and watched it a few times now. I love the look Joel gives to Conan after Andy asks "Does discharge count?" So perfect.
I'm pretty sure they actually don't like each other. Conan and Joel has a very different vibe compared so say Timothy Olyphant. Conan and Tim low key love each other.
I swear, I have never seen anybody do improv comedy as well as Conan. He is a force, once in motion. He so fluidly picks up anything you put down and makes it into a bit, and I will always admire his ability to do that.
I was thinking the same thing. Miss Craig. He really was a great interviewer. He really would have had a hard time saying A great day for America the past 5 years.
I've watched this "interview" 5 times already and I'll watch it again someday. Two friends messing around and the camera happens to be rolling. Top notch content only Conan could pull this off.
Hey, there are a few minutes here that didn’t air on TV...the whole section with Joel talking about the Conan bits he loved is extra. His amusement and description of the scene and Conan being genuinely pleased with it is the highlight of the interview! I’m glad I watched it here!
