Honda Brake Lights Staying On when Car is OFF? - Civic Quick Tip - Bundys Garage

  • Is your brake light staying on, in your Civic? draining your battery? There is a little piece of rubber that falls out of the brake pedal and causes the lights to stay on because there is no contact between the brake pedal and the brake light switch.
Don't run to Honda and get a new little rubber piece, do what I did, get a bolt and bolt it into place on the brake pedal.
Sometimes it will be a wiring situation and you will need to dive in and find out why it is not working. But in this case a piece of runner fell out.
Video was shot using a 1991 Honda Civic
I will get back to everyone who leaves a comment.

8 yrs later, you've saved me a huge headache! Took me a bit to get some context of what I'm looking at in the video, but lo and behold it was the same exact issue. It must have just happened because the broken piece was resting up on the shield thing above the pedals. Not sure why such important parts are made out of plastic, but the recent heat wave must have fried it. Thanks for the fix!

I found the same problem yesterday. Nice to know I'm not the only one. What I did slightly differently though was, because there's not a lot of gap between the plate that's welded onto the brake pedal bar and the end of the threaded switch housing, I found a fairly short 8mm threaded bolt and nut then used my little milling machine to take off most of the bolt head. It's now down to about 3mm thick and, I think, leaving a tiny gap between the bolt head and the switch body. It's also made a nice smooth surface for the switch plunger to touch down on. 1990 Civic GL, twin carb, currently 210,000 miles on the odometer.

This little problem cause my battery to train and lock the car completely to the point even the key wouldn’t unlock the car manually. Had to get an unlock kit to get in to the car. Replaced my battery and then i noticed my brake lights were on even while the car was off. Taped a penny and it fixed the issue. Thanks!

This saved me a lot of time with troubleshooting the issue I was having with my Mom's 2001 Honda CR-V. I found a chunk of the plastic piece that used to be there and crammed it back in its original spot for now. I'll probably super glue some pennies on there tomorrow. Lol

Thank you for the video! Short, quick, straight to the point, and actually helped me solve the problem. I didn't have any bolts handy so I just did like another receipt and used a folded up receipt and stuck it in the hole and et voila, lights are off :D
