I don’t get why developers think sail boats need to be machine gun speed boats. The slower speed is easier to code and adds so much more impact in getting off broadsides that take a minute to reload vs seconds. It builds anticipation. As someone who is damn near obsessed with the age of sail, disappointment is a massive understatement. 17th and 18th century sea battles were so incredibly epic with giant behemoths slowly riding through the waves before opening a thunderstorm of cannons ripping the hull and men apart. Hell even in sea of thieves, which is basically a cartoon, engagements can last HOURS if both the crews on both sides are competent which makes them so memorable and rewarding even if you lose. Instead Ubisoft treats us like a bunch of 10 year olds whos attention spans couldnt possibly last longer than five minutes.

100% agreed but if it was historically accurate, the only women in it would be low rent doxie's in some Caribbean dive town. They wouldn't be anywhere near a ship and certainly not Captaining a crew. mary read, anne bonny, madame cheng, and grace o'malley dont count as historically accurate. Cheng and o'malley never went to sea with crews. Bonney and Read were dumbass teenage girls that were passed around by a low rent crew of coastal hugging drunks that robbed fishermen. They were like a pack of cigarettes in a foxhole passed around from man to man. So much so that they were both pregnant when captured. Having been a part of the past insider's program, I can confirm that they have made it worse between test sessions. They expelled me from the last closed session about 6 months ago, so I don't really know the current state of the game. However, I have reasons to fear that we'll encounter the same issues as with The Day Before, only this time it will be backed by Ubisoft's substantial financial resources. My advice is to steer clear of pre-orders (as is the case with highly anticipated games; in recent years, they have increasingly failed to deliver on their promises).

Skull and bones feels like "monetization" as the core, and they built the game around that... to me, it looks like they thought, "How can we make players spend money for this?" Every time they made something for the game

I played Black Flag many years ago and finished the game for like my 1000th time a week or two ago, I love pirates and have loved them since I was incredibly young, I grew up with pirates of the caribbean and Peter Pan (my favourite character was captain hook as well). When this game's trailer came out (the first one) I was extremely happy, I had hopes that this could be the ultimate pirate game, where you can go around the caribbean pillaging ships, escaping from storms, boarding enemy ships, have awesome brutal swordfights between your crew and the enemy or even manage your own crew, select a quartermaster or decide who goes where and what they do... I wanted something realistic, I wanted to be, to feel, to act like a pirate captain.
Then, everything went cold and nothing was spoken about this game, I still had hopes that it would come out and that I would finally be able to do everything I thought and hoped, but as I watched the videos, trailers and whatnot, I became disolusioned, nothing, absolutely nothing that I had hoped for became reality. You don't play as a pirate, you play as the ship itself like another comment said... This is not what the fanbase wanted, this is not what people believed or waited for, this is a completely waste of development and of a pirate game. Even the ship to ship combat doesn't seem fun, it'll eventually be whoever has the weirdest and more random idiotic weapon or how much time you clicked the green thing to collect things and upgrade your ship to look like a baby was told to make a pirate ship.
Anyways, this game is not what it was supposed to be and I only wish Ubisoft sees this video or at least LISTENS to the fanbase and realise the mistale they've done and fix it. Sure the game might be delayed more but I believe it'll be better to wait more time for the game to reach what it should be.

Perfect example of why I hate everything about modern AAA multiplayer titles. If its a singleplayer game, I allow myself to get hopeful sometimes. The moment I hear its heavily multiplayer focused, I stop paying it any attention because I already know its going to be hot garbage thats overpriced, more focused on graphic metrics than gameplay, it will have no soul or passion of joy, and most (if not all) of the post-launch development will be on cosmetic goofy nonsense that ensures that any small taste of immersion that was left is soundly scrapped off and tossed in the gutter.
Ubisoft did not make AC Black Flag, a team of skilled and passionate people made it. Those people dont work at Ubisoft anymore, the few that do no longer get to be passionate, only using their skills to do what they are told to do by less qualified fools.
Making a game is an ART. And Ubisoft doesnt make art. Why do people keep paying them AAA prices to make "free + microtransactions" mobile game crap? Follow the names in the credits, not the corporate logo on a start screen.

You could either buy your ships or just capture them, any ships, there was no ships off limits, you got to choose what flag you wanted to sail under which either gave you lots of enemies or lots of allies. You could walk around the cities and recruit people and everything, it was like Black Flag before Black Flag. That is what I wanted and damn near expected from Skull and Bones. I believe it came out in 2006 and was part of a series of games. @@Inrikator Not being able to leave the ship, having to cut down trees from the ship's deck and boarding other ships only in brief cutscenes are obviously the worst handicaps this game has, but even if they fixed that the game would still be garbage on account of the ridiculous, unrealistic weaponry and the weird ugly, bright ships.
I always thought the normal, conventional weapons and ammo types(plain cannons, swivel guns, fire barrels, round shot & chain shot) were alot of fun. I do think that AC:Black Flag was rather limited in that respect and could have benefited from more weapons and ammo types.
But they could have done that by adding more, realistic (or at least historically credible) weapons and ammo types:
Grape shot, heated shot, Forward facing chase cannons, backward facing cannons, actual harpoon guns..etc. That would've been much better than adding machine guns and torpedoes.
They could have further upgraded the game by adding more weapons you can use as your playable character (In the scenario where you CAN leave your ship and fight onm land or on deck) such as: Throwabale handgrenades (Black metal balls with fuses), muskets, many different types of swords, daggers...etc
As for the look of the ships: The realistic look of the ships in AC: Black Flag was amazing and one of the things I enjoyed most about the game. Made it feel like an authentic pirate experience. The fact that now, in SaB, the ships look like carnival attractions is terrible. It makes it look even less serious than Sea of Thieves.
If people want "fun, arcady, high octane" games, they should go for fortnight; Entirely fictional concepts. Most people who were initially enthusiastic about SaB, just wanted a realistic, open world, online pirate game.
AC;Black Flag, but much bigger, much better and online with many other players and crews.

It means more individuality and that is fun for me.

The firework launcher was most likely a emplaced Hwacha from the Imjin wars, the Hwacha was not only used on land but its capability to fire down explosive arrows and fire arrows were much deadlier on Japanese wooden ships and transports. Most of these weapons would likely be effective in some way or form but eventually I'm pretty sure the Dutch and French crews already standardized at least having like a few hundred buckets that could be used in case of a fire in real life.

I also think a system where you are competing against AI pirate crews in a sort of ranking where the higher up you get the better equipment becomes available because the better crews get priority over you because they have a system that means more notorious pirates get tribute. They could also have a kind of online mode where a pirate hunter can spawn into your game to try and kill you or something.

You could be a merchant or you could be a smuggler selling contraband. You could berth ships, explore dungeons filled with pirates and loot while also having a chance to encounter cursed skeletons. You could enter houses and steal loot, explore the islands’ inner jungles. The sailing, at least in POtC was hyper realistic with long drawn naval battles and amazing boarding realism where if you were boarding a smaller vessel you only had to clear out 1 maybe 2 decks of enemies before reaching the captain’s headquarters with a gigantic stash of gold and the ship’s storage, while on larger ships you would have to clear 3 or 4 decks. Your crew would turn mutinous if you failed to divide the plunder soon enough. You had skills such as leadership, fencing, sailing and a massive amount of ships divided into 7 tiers depending on size, speed, firepower, cargo capacity from measly tartanes with no cannons all the way to 4 decked ships of the line with a hundred guns.
I wish we got something like that with awesome gritty dark graphics. Oh well

11 years later AC Black Flag is still the blueprint of what an open world pirate RPG should be like. And it's an ASSASSINS CREED game first and foremost. That main menu theme still gives me goosebumps when I boot up the game. They had the perfect formula.

I think another huge thing that ruins it... is the cosmetics, had they gone for the gritty, dirty pirate look like the original trailer, it would look like a better game. Instead they have to go for the colourful cosmetics and silly looking ship designs... no make it more realistic that's what the fan base wanted, like black flag... not Fortnite looking ships for kids.

I don't understand why this is so difficult for them, They could have just made a single player RPG Pirate tale with realistic history, and graphics mixed with mysticism and legends, I would have given it a multi origin story for whatever background one chose for replay value, choices being Privateer (you have steady paying work for the crown until a pirate attack changed your life either for revenge or for personal glory you make a career change), Stole away (poor and lacking any other options after being framed for a crime you didn't commit or one that you did depending on your whim, you hop on the nearest ship to escape but it turns out to be one with Pirates), Shipwrecked survivor, Marooned former Captain (A mutiny left you stranded until ingenuity bid you set sail once more either due to being a good captain or a bad one, The Sailor ( at home amid the waters making an honest or a dishonest living you choose to follow pirates or be chosen by them. The companions would be detailed with their own personal stories and missions for earning their loyalty (Bioware/ Bethesda esq.), Plenty of Romance and hookup options (Witcher 2&3) might even throw in a marriage or two (fable/ Skyrim/Starfield) you're a pirate you should do what you want when you want to do it, Land gameplay is a must, sword fights, with plenty of kill cam shots, treasure hunting, burring a crew members head as punishment, walking the plank punishment, scrubbing the deck, pirate songs galore robbery in general, seizing towns or forts also would be good, third person is a must with first person optional for those that love it, customizable characters, ships, and possible hideouts or islands, engaging story with historical and mystical legend is a must, option to become a cursed pirate such as vampire or werewolf or mermaid for lack of a better option due to the legends but still realistic, ghosts and so forth should be among many sea monsters, legendary ships and both the British navy and Spanish navy both on your trail or trying to recruit you. Become King/Queen of The Pirates or The Bane Of The Pirates your choice dialogue options and overall reaction and tone of story progression, potential for betrayal from you or your crew including lovers on the high seas, Sorry about the fantasy game rant, been dreaming of an ideal pirate game since Black Flag without all the animus stuff. If only right.

Is it too much to ask for a pirate game where your ships damage is realistic in the sense where a cannon ball hits, that spot has a hole. If you’re hit below your water line you’re sending someone to fix it & if you’re out of resources you better find land quickly. Is it too much to ask for (I’ll even take procedurally generated) islands with treasure & tribes & things to pillage. For you to become a wanted person & even if it’s just PVE, for a wanted level, with different crew with different personalities that occasionally try to enact mutiny? Apparently the answer is yes.

Probably the only reason to release this game should be agreements and contracts. Ubisoft has branches in several countries and receives many tax benefits from those countries. Ubisoft Singapore appears to have a large stake in this project. When you receive a fortune in tax benefits you need to deliver something, even if it is a bad product.

Skull and Bones is a classic case of missed identity. It simply doesnt know what it wants to be. Is it and arcade naval combat game? Is it an open world naval exploration/survival game? The corporate overlords are likely pulling the strings and shifting the game to the new meta. They want it to be a live service so they can monetize it. They want to sell cosmetics and eventually expansions, but you cant have expansions if its just a simple arcade combat game.

I have a buddy who worked on
the project so I heard some gossips over the years and sometime hanged out with some of them. I definitely don't think it lacked funding from what I understand. My personal guess is that it was just too big of a project for the particular conditions of the singapore studio. They made a advantageous deal with the government to get subsidies at the condition they release this big game and hire locals iirc. So the team was mostly expats from France and Canada managing people from all around the world at relatively high salaries compare to the inexperienced locals. Expats typically don't stick around too long and alot of them got poached by other video games companies that probably enjoyed similar deals. Thr management was changed a few times too. After a few years of developement, it's not the same faces anymore and it's like starting all over again.
They all started this during the "game as a service" trend, which is probably why there's a bunch of weird shit on the boats. A few years back it might have been fine, but now it's a much harder sell I guess.
