I saw Bosnian Bill do this some years back and a little more recently our cuddly friend Chris Capune. It's a terrible thing that some lock companies just don't protect their locks against this attack.

You can find this occasionally in cheaper Chinese locks but you wouldn't exorcist companies like Gerda to fall foul of it.

Never seen the shim going down the shearline on a padlock, just down the shackle!
It's always a good bypass to try although it only works on locks that don't have a lip. The lip stood you slipping the shim part it.

Gently lift the pins with the rake and slide the shim down the unprotected shear line.
