Behind all this there's one important thing: you have a gig. :) That's a huuuuge factor that naturally puts many things in place, makes you separate the important from the unimportant, what is really required, what works or not, etc. There are many people out there who try to start making music, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, they get gear, make something, but quite often, ultimately nothing coherent comes out. Because they don't have a gig. I feel that the biggest possible favor anyone could do is, organize a time and a place where people can perform for an actual audience. The water starts flowing! It can be something as small as a family get-together, a birthday party, something in school for kids, anything. Even the existence of gigs somewhere can serve the same purpose - if people can _dream_ of having a gig, it can guide their music-making and their whole future.

Hey! You said something profound. 15:18 "That's where creativity lives--in struggle." It's like... having limits gives you a structure that you can use almost like scaffolding for your creativity. A finite, well-understood space of possibilities, versus a limitless space where everything is possible, is your friend. I think that, as much as anything else, is why a lot of people like to get away from their DAW. The DAW is too powerful. The space of possibilities too vast. Often a selection of a few well-understood, dedicated-function tools is better. "Creativity lives in struggle." That was well-said. Very succinct.

I know a few other people also doing something like this, seems like it makes sense. Although it’s not a sampler, as far as sequencing goes, the five12 Vector does everything you pointed out and a whole lot more (probability, internal and external modulation, sub sequencers, as many different programs within a song per track as you wants), has tons of both cv out and midi out, and very logical functionality, hi res displays. I think it’s one of the best sequencers ever made. I was on the Cirklon waiting list for a year, but got off it once I got my Vector.
You'd be surprised how unlimited this is, though! It's a midi sequencer with almost unlimited tracks, it's got inputs and audio recording for recording midi tracked instruments, etc etc. It's 90% of a DAW! Just no really long form recording, which is not a huge deal unless you want to add a vocalist or something similar
Quality video as always Ricky :-) I used to own an MPC1000 and I stupidly sold it. After really missing it I thought long and hard and ended up buying the MPC Live. I still miss the 1000 lol. The Live sounds awesome and the effects are amazing, it’s really good. You can power 2 x USB powered synths from it and run them through the internal FX, this means I can have the MPC and my Bass Station 2 fully portable. I do miss a few of the immediate functions of the 1000 and I think the 1000 still looks really cool, thinking practically though, the Live wins for me.
I totally agree. Being able to name the parts is huge when playing live. I did a gig with a cheap sampler, left my MPC at home a couple of weeks ago. I won't be doing that again.
Not sure why more people don’t utilize the MPC in relation to Eurorack especially folks performing live music. It’s an awesome tool for marring Euro with your other midi capable hardware synths. I’m at the point where I feel I have the perfect set up for me. I have mpc midi A out going to an RK004 that branches to 6 hardware synths. Midi B out goes to a Polyend Poly where i can run up to 8 channels out of cvgate, pitch, and modulation to euro. I run all kinds of sequencers through the 2 mpc midi ins. Apps, hardware sequencers, midi controllers. This allows you the flexibility to bring just about any kind of sequencer to eurorack. By running it through the mpc you can build full tracks recording midi data and modulations. Thats in addition to being able to add samples to the tracks as well. Gone are the limitations of rack space for sequencers and all the $$ needed to buy them. The negatives, you sacrifice the ability to modulate the sequencer and you have to toy with the transpose to get the pitch right to euro. An MPC, RK004, and Polyend poly is an awesome studio set up.
i tottaly agree in the fact that limitations makes the process of creation so much fun. if you like limitations try the electribe 2 sampler, i have one and it can relly make great music. Definitly an underrated machine
I feel ya on simplicity, and my brain getting overwhelmed with too many options. I find I like to work within certain limits to push creativity. Ironically I was thinking about getting the MPC1000 recently. I owned it once before and wish I didn’t sell it. So this video help me verify my idea to get another one. I had a similar idea to use it like you are. Btw I dig the color scheme on yours. Your set is gonna be great man. I already hear that. Thanks for posting! Peace ✌🏼
Ooohh yeah!! Nice one !! I been playing has "drummer"(fingerdrums) and DJ/electronic guy on a flamenco fusion band for a looooong time now....MPC 1000 it's been my main tool. And you are right with limitations and gear. I like to use hardware for a concrete function. Sometimes I think "this machine can do much more tricks...I should try do this or that on stage next time" but at the end live performing it's about (in my opinion) been comfortable and transmit.... I meet connect with the people .... And if you are playing a very complex setup you lost your connection with your audience. Good work! Nice video!!
awesome video. I almost bought a mpc 1000 on the spot after watching (but talked myself out of it for now as I think I can work with what I got) but man, you and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to using simple machines that do specific tasks and then chaining stuff together and working within boundaries. I recently bought some 20 dollar "toys" off ebay and I'm having way more fun combining them in different ways to get different fx than I ever have working within a DAW. Love your videos, love your attitude, great vibes, keep it comin' xD
Just got the most insane deal on a fully maxed out MPC1000 with the fat pad upgrade...planning on using it with my AE modular system too:) Great video! And...you have a new subscriber!
Yes. Yessss, yessssss! The track mutes, pad mutes and next sequence are gold, I still haven't found a sequencer that suits me better than my MPC 1K. I was doubting between getting JJOS and updating my DAW, ended up going for JJOS 2XL and haven't regretted it once.
I actually wish the MPC Live had dedicated buttons for Mute/TrackMute/NextSequence like the mpc1000 does. Gotta go into the touch menu to do that; which isnt very intuitive live. There are still things I believe the mpc1000 does better than the live. Another thing w/ the MPCLive; It cant have a Program playing a bass sample melody + send the same program midi out to another instrument. Like ive seen you do with the circuit for example. Its still a great machine tho. I do have good things to say about the Live but this comments getting long. Point is. The mpc1000 is a great machine; i wouldnt get rid of it for a Live. Love the video! :D
There'a really no excuse for this - Akai hadn't learned from last15 years of progression after the MPC 1000 was released. They had the opportunity to expand on perfection and instead they gave us a half-baked product with cheapo software instruments and pads that light up like Christmas trees.
I’ve had two MPC 1000’s, and a 2500. They are great machines, turned into phenomenal machines with JJOSXL. That being said, I sold my 1000’s for things I can’t remember and sold the 2500 after I bought my MPC Live. After the first 30 minutes of updating it and registering it with my computer, I haven’t had to hook it up to my computer once. Yes, switching tracks can be kind of annoying using a touch screen or navigating with the Q links but it’s really not that big of a deal and given everything else it can do that the 1000 and 2500 can’t, it’s trade offs are really minor. I love my MPC Live; my biggest learning curve was dealing with the lack of a flip up screen. That’s about it. I also had a Deluge, the archaic screen killed it for me. Browsing was a chore. Lovely instrument too, but it always felt like the next version they make will be the one to own.
The BEST HATED MPC EVER MADE!!!!! The sleeper of all MPC's love my 1000 internal 128 gig sd card installed JJOS still being updated in 2019!!! GET ONE WHILE YOU STILL CAN GET THEM CHEAP yes will cost a bite to refurbish but all parts are still available and cheap once done it will last another 30 years I have the live as well and I don't think this battery will last as long as the 1k will lol.
I agree 100% with what you said about struggling to create out of limitations, I mean historically we are tool-making problem-solving creatures, although we are also the root of so many problems I guess.
Yo Ricky (and anyone else who own a 1000) you should try playing around with the multi-outs on the back. You've got four separate mono outs (which can also be 2 stereo pairs) plus the main stereo out. Running vocals/synths/drums through my guitar fx sounds reaaaally cool. Great video bro!
Been doing a similar thing but with modular and Deluge, tend to use different drum kits on tracks as well though. Love the modular for the interesting glitchy precussion and use of filters etc. Nice videos!
This is the video I've been looking for, thank you for doing this. I'm looking at replacing ableton/macbook with the MPC for live sets. Still trying to figure it out but this helps loads
wow man... i've been producing house for over ten years and over the past year or two between work and life I really lost the passion for it. right before i hit this slump i picked up an mpc1000 and really couldn't get into it. i even played a show with it but only really used it for some pretty bare bones drums. then sure enough i re-find your vids and realize one of my biggest issues is not having the jjos 3.66. Game CHANGER. seriously, i sat through a couple of your mpc vids after installing and in the blink of an eye i was on my way to space. you are awesome, great banter, and you remind me so much of a guy that i used to collab with a bunch lol you look alike, talk alike, and dress alike. this kills me, it's like being taught by my homie haha float on brother. i'll be along for the ride. (PS you should convince erica synths to let you ***borrow*** one of those techno systems - that thing is like a death machine soul portal lololol) thanks for breathing life back into my music.
This was an awesome read Joseph, thanks so much for all these kind words! You know I have a soft spot for MPC house music, so please share some of the music you been working on! I would love to hear it. And tell your homie “I like your style dude..”
I was behind the guy who was behind the guy who was behind you at the same coffee shop.... You may not have noticed me as I was quietly reading my "How to stalk your TH-cam superstar crush" reference book and guide.
Super helpful man. Have had a mpc1000 With jjos since it came out. Was originally using it has a brain for live drums using hart pads and a Roland trigger to midi box for a live techno band. Just started seriously getting into modular and this vid was awesome. Thanks man. Would love to see more
Yeah man they feel great. I have two hart snare pads www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/hart-dynamics-professional-13-snare-drum-with-mesh-head. And a 4 Roland small rubber pads. www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/roland-pd-8-dual-trigger-pad/449923000001000 All of this is on one dual Tama Tom stand. Built a small attachment to put the mpc on. It’s nice having everything right there
I like the 1000 better than the Live as well for that exact reason. After two years with the Live I sold it, bought a 1000 and pimped it out with the difference in cash. The Live does a lot of things but it's too dependent on the screen which makes it harder to do the simple stuff (like sequence the rest of my gear). Couldn't be happier now...
I’ve been on the MPC1k JJOS2XL for the past 6 years. I’ve been looking for a new killer sequencer for the past 2 years and doing constant sight unseen comparisons with every sequencer available thinking I needed something new. All the other products left me wondering how I would actually finish things or get them to a “finished working state.” I asked myself what I really wanted and at the end of the day it was some sort of x0x style drum/melody sequencer. So I just paired a beatstep pro with my 1k and couldn’t be happier. Well, I wish the probability function in it worked like Elektron stuff but we can’t seem to have it all, can we? /ramble
Jacob Siener I had 4 different MPC’s including the 1000 with JJ. I can’t go back from the MPCX (I have a few EuroRack rigs so I fully utilize it.) It’s by far, in my opinion, the king sequencer out.
Not always on everyone's top of the list for sequencers but the OP-Z sequencer is truly incredible. I've got a lot of Elektron products as well as a MPC 2500 and they're all great but truly I think all of them could learn a few tricks from Teenage Engineering in this area.
I ended up buying and MPC 1000 with one sunk in button (still works though), Two pads that are dying and a missing side panel for $80. Fuckin steal man.
Not sure if I'd ever go for a vintage MPC vs. the Live/X I got now... but I just did pick up an rs7000 and mc-909, for what it's worth... ;-) (this video was a nice re-assurance that I am not going crazy adding more and more vintage sequencers and also analog synths when I already have an over-the-top computer setup also with Maschine, tons of plugins, controllers, the works)
Ricky man you kill it w these videos. The way you film them the film coloring is great. The way you talk. Your excellent man glad I found this channel. Where are you based out of ? Would love to see you perform
I've been using my MPC60ii, ASQ-10 and 3x Kenton converters for my modulars since the late 90s, - never found a more solid, intuitive and immediate way of working... Recently picked up an immaculate 2000xl SE for £350, - just as a backup device... l Almost bought a refurbished, full-blackout 1000 for £700, but managed to control myself...I like the current MPC units, but personally, they just feel too much like computers to me... Someone needs to make something like the ASQ-10, but with multiple cv/gates, as well as midi....
More old-school: make an SP303 video :) Nice done with MPC1000, I always wanted buy one for the limitation and simplicity. Ended by buying an SP303, very limited gear but so much fun.
I really love your approach, less is more, and i'm diggin' a lot the MPC1000 thank to this video, ever since I got into music production I've been looking for a machine that feels comfortable in my whole workflow, I'm looking forward to get one in my country for the right price I hope I can found one.
Hey Ricky, Love your videos. We use a lot of the same gear! Question, I would love to see how you have the camera setup from a BTS perspective. We film a lot of live jams and area always looking for new ways to compose our shots. Love From Chicago
Awesome mate. So glad you made this. I seem to be on the right track with my mpc1000 this just stamps im doing things correct. I’ve been having a ball with the se02 and mpc1000. Just trying to figure out some reverb options live for drums and synths. Maybe a pedal?
"it's basically unmatched by today's standards of what a sequencer and sampler should do you have almost unlimited everything" I wish I could insert that gif of Ryan Reynolds saying "But why?"
MPC 1000's are an absolute steal for what you can pick them up for second hand. I'm seeing most of them on the market for around $350 these days and that's quite a deal. Functionally there's not much different between this model and the 2500. It's just tighter and more compact. But, as always, the best thing about an MPC is the DACs. The machines just sound polished and pro. The drums here being an excellent example of that. Do you use the master compressor and EQ?
Ricky i love your Videos, Style and your Opinion on Gear. I still hope to see you trying out the Deluge and to hear what parts of it you think would fit in your workflow. Especially when it comes to building a live setup and pairing it up whith other instruments. Greets from Austria.
Dammit Ricky! You just ignited the GAS for the MPC 1k... I Had one as yours, custom with wood trims, and I’m such a fool that I sold it. I can’t find a decent one nowadays.
Nice vid, and explains why you've never reviewed an MPC One or the like. Funny you say you're confused by it though and then use an Octatrak, which scares the crap out of me when I see it on your vids ;). I know what you mean by complexity as I have a Push2, which is great, but has sooo many options! Thanks to you, I'm definitely going DAWless with some modular and an MPC One as from what I've seen, it seems way simpler than a Push2. Keep up the GR8 Vids :)
Makes a lot of sense about filter, release and mutes being readily accessible in the same place always, and I felt the same way about the MPC Live when I tried it though your command of these machines is on another level. Out of curiosity, since almost all your jams are pretty much house, what would be your top recommendations for essential house recordings or artists to check out?
It's ridiculous that the MPC's were pretty much discontinued, especially the 500 and 1000. I even wish Yamaha would be offering some highly compact models like the QX/QY serie....
Mutable Instruments modules are awesome. They're very well thought-out, easy to use, and very capable. (The discontinued early modules are perhaps less so, but still really good.) However, a lot of people know that, so a lot of people have them - in particular, sound sources such as Plaits and Rings - so there's the risk of sounding like everyone else. One other thing I find with modules such as Plaits and Rings is that, if you're really into sound design, they take some of the fun out of it, because your sounds come out of the module almost fully formed. There isn't quite the same feeling of having multiple modules working together to create a sound. Part of me wishes I were doing Rings's modal and inharmonic string syntheses entirely from scratch using analog modules instead. But I imagine that would require a lot more money and HP. But I expect I'm in the minority here.
Whats the trick on that MPC that gives your drums/hats that awesome swing to them? Is there some kind of quantization/shuffle setting on the master or something like that? It sounds great!
how could you do smoother and more free choice or improv/random transitions with the mpc1000? perhaps somehow with the sliders and layers? have you send DMX KREW's live set video on FOLD youtube? seems like he's pretty much scrolling from one seq to the next in a predetermined order, and so not necessarily free to change up the selection/order of the next track/song/composition to a completely different one in a live setting, if you understand what i mean? perhaps somehow with layers or layered patterns or midi cc programmable controllable stuff?
Behind all this there's one important thing: you have a gig. :) That's a huuuuge factor that naturally puts many things in place, makes you separate the important from the unimportant, what is really required, what works or not, etc. There are many people out there who try to start making music, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, they get gear, make something, but quite often, ultimately nothing coherent comes out. Even the existence of gigs somewhere can serve the same purpose - if people can _dream_ of having a gig, it can guide their music-making and their whole future.
It's really satisfying how the MPC is about the same size as the modular, they just look right together.
Tooootallyy. I swap cases all the time too

The original MPCs have such a solid grid sequencer when you add the swing it just = Groove.
is it the newest one (one, live and x) doesn't do the same groove?

Old school MPC still intrigues me.
This week though I bought a MC-101 (+3000 Roland presets including CR78!).
Nice video!
God I love old MPCs. I so wish the midi piano roll output screen could be implemented on the Digitakt.
Just curious why the MPC Live isn't in the works.
My buddy got a 1k earlier this year and I messed with it a little bit; If you can deal with the early 00's programming, they're totally invaluable.
The MPC1000 MIDI sequencer is a dream to work with. For me upgrading it to the free JJ OS made a big difference the way the step sequencer works.

Very nice seeing some modern Mpc1000 love!
"Damn this beat is groovin'."
I agree man, I agree. 👍
I'd love to see you do a video comparing the different MPCs you own.
Loving these MPC videos, definitely giving me motivation to fix up my 1000
awesome video.
I was doubting between getting JJOS and updating my DAW, ended up going for JJOS 2XL and haven't regretted it once.
glad you found such a rad 1000! good hanging at knobcon man!
I have one coming, I'm curious about CV outs. Thanks for this. Keep going!!
🙏 Thanks for the great video! MPC's are in a league of their own ❤
I actually wish the MPC Live had dedicated buttons for Mute/TrackMute/NextSequence like the mpc1000 does.
Exactly! I need that immediacy!
you don't need to use the screen? just press menu button and the corresponding pad- 5, 6 or 7 and you're there. simples
GET ONE WHILE YOU STILL CAN GET THEM CHEAP yes will cost a bite to refurbish but all parts are still available and cheap once done it will last another 30 years I have the live as well and I don't think this battery will last as long as the 1k will lol.
also, always buy the black one not the blue!
Ricky Tinez the blue’s not bad if the previous owner redid the pads
B.FREE CUSTOMS I love the 1000 so much I bought 2 😎🇨🇦🔥👊🏿
I just picked up a blue version and the pads are original and work perfectly. For now anyway. If I have to replace them then so be it.
I agree 100% with what you said about struggling to create out of limitations, I mean historically we are tool-making problem-solving creatures, although we are also the root of so many problems I guess.
That’s where my head’s at. I love making music because it’s an endless puzzle with tons of endings
Matt Parkes have you got any examples? I’m trying to work out a good workflow between deluge and modular at the moment
This is the video I've been looking for, thank you for doing this. I'm looking at replacing ableton/macbook with the MPC for live sets. Still trying to figure it out but this helps loads
Great, another workflow to consider :)
7:51 is where it is happening for me. Solid grooves
wow man... i've been producing house for over ten years and over the past year or two between work and life I really lost the passion for it. right before i hit this slump i picked up an mpc1000 and really couldn't get into it. i even played a show with it but only really used it for some pretty bare bones drums. then sure enough i re-find your vids and realize one of my biggest issues is not having the jjos 3.66.
Was pumped to make ya a coffee at Velocity the other day! Thanks for another killer vid! Love the tiny but ultra capable setups.
Damn. I dream about that coffee Brodie, I’m sad I didn’t get it sooner! Haha. Thanks again man
I was behind the guy who was behind the guy who was behind you at the same coffee shop.... You may not have noticed me as I was quietly reading my "How to stalk your TH-cam superstar crush" reference book and guide.
@@tatnallkennedy haha! next time say waht's up! thank you for the support
Another super helpful video of yours! Love it. Octave One are also using MPC1000 for their live setups...
Yes mpc 1000 videos
Bangers
You should put one of your sets on TH-cam for the people who can't get to your shows
Id watch that
Super helpful man. Have had a mpc1000 With jjos since it came out. Was originally using it has a brain for live drums using hart pads and a Roland trigger to midi box for a live techno band. Just started seriously getting into modular and this vid was awesome. Thanks man. Would love to see more
Man that’s like a dream setup of mine! I feel like with sticks I’ll be able to get new rhythms via midi into its sequencer
Yeah man they feel great. I have two hart snare pads www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/hart-dynamics-professional-13-snare-drum-with-mesh-head.
And a 4 Roland small rubber pads.
www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/roland-pd-8-dual-trigger-pad/449923000001000
All of this is on one dual Tama Tom stand.
Damn. This is all I’ve ever needed to hear lol
/ramble
Oh that’s cool. I want to run the 1k with my squid 🦑 I think that’ll be a fun setup. Especially since the 1k has the 2 midi outs and 2 ins
Jacob Siener I had 4 different MPC’s including the 1000 with JJ. I can’t go back from the MPCX (I have a few EuroRack rigs so I fully utilize it.)
It’s by far, in my opinion, the king sequencer out.
JJOS3 is real awesome.
oh shit thats a great idea! been a little frustrated with my mpc500 for sequencing. might have to get a bsp
Not always on everyone's top of the list for sequencers but the OP-Z sequencer is truly incredible. I've got a lot of Elektron products as well as a MPC 2500 and they're all great but truly I think all of them could learn a few tricks from Teenage Engineering in this area.
This is a killer setup. And your set sounds uberdope, really cool vibe.
More mpc 1000 tips please!
Yet another fun video and inspiring setup. Thank you so much, Mr Tinez!
Man, I was using a 2000xl for a while, I just sold it for a Digitakt, but this is making me consider going back to the MPC.
Ricky man you kill it w these videos. The way you film them the film coloring is great. The way you talk. Your excellent man glad I found this channel. Where are you based out of ? Would love to see you perform
Super awesome. I'd love to see more on how to intigrate a MPC with modular.
More old-school: make an SP303 video :)
Nice done with MPC1000, I always wanted buy one for the limitation and simplicity. Ended by buying an SP303, very limited gear but so much fun.
Novation Circuit1000 when?
I’d buy it.
I agree! When will we get a Circuit MKII? We need more sample time and granular!
DMX krew's boiler room is an MPC1000 and a 303. So rad!
Hey man! Thank you for the video, which JJOS are you using? Peace
"it's basically unmatched by today's standards of what a sequencer and sampler should do you have almost unlimited everything"
I wish I could insert that gif of Ryan Reynolds saying "But why?"
Do you use the master compressor and EQ?
the 2nd track sounds so dope man ! u need to finish it :)
i appreciate you bro. I love what you said at 15:16 on point. Blessup
9:35 That "boob bob do bop" sing song is more music than 90% of the ... in this nevertheless very informative video. loveley
So beautiful! Almost tempted to switch my mpc live for a 1000! Can this be done with Mpc Live and the Digitone?
It's ridiculous that the MPC's were pretty much discontinued, especially the 500 and 1000. I even wish Yamaha would be offering some highly compact models like the QX/QY serie....
I welcome limitations! Too many options and I start daydreaming and drifting away, never to accomplish a single thing.
super inspiring man! i bought the mimentic and the clep diaz because of your video's :)
What'd you think of mutable instruments? Thinking of starting a modular build and the plaits, stages, and tides all look good to me
Mutable Instruments modules are awesome.
But I expect I'm in the minority here.
would love to hear your take and tricks on the free JJOS , always enjoy your tutorials
Whats the trick on that MPC that gives your drums/hats that awesome swing to them? Is there some kind of quantization/shuffle setting on the master or something like that? It sounds great!
Yes haha. You just turn the swing up!
you can also swing /shuffle any sample /pad independantly
Yeah buddy, move that fader!
Hey Ricky. Am new to synth ambient music. Am learning my novation circuit. I would love to see you use the mpc 1000 and the circuit together.
how could you do smoother and more free choice or improv/random transitions with the mpc1000? perhaps somehow with the sliders and layers? have you send DMX KREW's live set video on FOLD youtube? seems like he's pretty much scrolling from one seq to the next in a predetermined order, and so not necessarily free to change up the selection/order of the next track/song/composition to a completely different one in a live setting, if you understand what i mean? perhaps somehow with layers or layered patterns or midi cc programmable controllable stuff?
Nice one! Missing my 2500
If this was your first time with MPC and your choices were MPC 1000 & MPC ONE strictly for Hip Hop which one would you recommend?
I’ve been using the mpc 2500 with JJOS for years. I love it. I’m curious why you went with the 1000 vs 2500 other than size? Great videos by the way.
