    Hi Tim, thanks for the mention and link, that's super kind, nice bit of cladding, oh and the screws that you had are great for cladding especially oak, all the best Robin

      Cheers. Good to know that the screws were ok for the job. Only read they were actually intended for flooring after I’d used them! 😂

    Excellent video and craftsmanship as usual Tim... add me to theeee list of wood grain appreciation society.... I purchased some Yew tree from my local hardware specialists to make a custom live edge shelf to go above our son’s custom Oak desk I made ... Was a great to introduce my 12yr old to the wonders of wood working ... gave him the sandpaper 4 hours later all sanded and stained with oil .... very large smile on his face looking at the amazing grain and his achievements...

    It would have been better to put one or two coats of oil on the boarding before fixing in situ. The reason is that the cladding will shrink, moreso since you have large overhanging eaves to protect the timber from rain, and leave unpainted stripes. You can't guarantee the moisture content of the timber on fixing especially as its been kicking around the merchants yard for 12 months or more so you don't know whether the timber is swollen or contracted.

    Great job - interesting about NOT applying the sealant. I was thinking clear silicon but -- trapping moisture....from where? However expansion and contraction would be allowed for in the silicon which won't harden. Love the look and the work.

      Lead flashing chased into stone wall. Frame had bolts to wall and then expanding gasket tape to seal the gaps between.

    Will you be repointing in lime mortar? It looks like its cement currently which will destroy those stones sooner or later.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Whole house is lime except that wall which needs sorting. It is the most exposed which is likely why it was redone in the past, (with cement).

    Would you bother with battens if you were using composite cladding on a timber frame? Thanks

    • @TheRestorationCouple

    Will be interested to see what mitre saw you get. I’ve had the same Evolution saw as you for a couple of years and I’m not very impressed with it. Mainly the angle adjustment is very inaccurate. I guess you get what you pay for.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve managed the whole house Reno with it but it’s never been that accurate. Would be nice to have a machine you can trust the numbers on and actually use the mitre readings instead of a dozen test cuts each time. 🙄

    • @showmeez
      @showmeez 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do indeed get what you pay for. I use the 110 V version of the same saw, while the price point does seriously hinder the quality of some of the features the thing has lasted quite a while of near daily outside use and has cheerfully cut everything I've thrown at it. I really can't fault it for the money. For chopping general landscaping materials and rough cuts it's been excellent. Furniture work or quality finish? Really not sure it's the tool you're looking for. Considering it was bought as a stop gap it's really won me over.

    Hey Tim. I'm building a pair of driveway gates out of pressure-treated redwood. I know you're a big Osmo fan - what oil would you recommend? Also, is it worth going pressure-treated or just stick with normal redwood and hope the Osmo does it's job?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do tend to use quite a few Osmo products but to be honest, I’ve not tried endless other options so just stick with what I know. I guess the main worry about using pressure treated wood is the shrinkage and movement that will happen afterwards. It depends how fancy the gates are and what joinery I guess but maybe safer to just use high-quality kiln dried and then treat yourself. Not sure how it’s done by gate manufacturers, whether the joinery is done before or after treatment. Are use what is my UV oil outside for things like that though and it works great but worth a top up cost every year or two.

    • @wainer16
      @wainer16 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRestorationCouple Thanks for the advice, Tim.
      That was one of my concerns with using pressure-treated. They'll be a similar construction to your side gates (half lap jointed frame with T&G cladding.
      I've ordered a few sample sachets of Osmo in clear, pine, and spruce, so hopefully one will be suitable.
      Thanks again!
