    I just want to say as a fellow pilot and a live streamer, this video series took a lot of planning, practicing and reshooting so we can digest it and simply say "well done". Many hours of figuring out how to say this simply, how to display that accurately, how to draw a simple diagram to make it clear. We are seeing years of experience and thought go into this. Microsoft should hire him to replace the foolish tutorials built-in to the game.

    I got my private in C152 back in 2001. Haven’t flown a small plane IRL for 9 years and I miss it a lot. MSFS and your great tutorials are bringing back lots of good memories including practice at some very short fields (so I was ready for a short field takeoff on my check ride). None were quite THIS short though. Very well presented. What a great training tool this sim is. As well as so much fun.

    I just want to thank you, Squirrel, for all of these remarkable TH-cam videos you've created for Microsoft Flight Sim. Your recorded tutorials and destination flights are simply the best out there and your delivery of the content is unmatched in my opinion. Really well done, sir.
    I know I'm a little late to the party, but frankly your videos have inspired me so I've been busy the last few days watching and saving all of your Flight Sim playlists. I look forward to using them as a sort of refresher course to help me get back in the virtual cockpit again. It's been a long time since my last MSFS flight (12 years?). With the consoles finally showing up in the marketplace and prices and availability finally leveling off to where they should be, it looks like I'll be going with an Xbox Series X setup. I tell you what, with nothing but genuine respect for the PC flight sim community, their contributions and commitment to their hobby, and the time, labor and love that many of them put into their homemade, custom computers (I built one myself for Flight Simulator 98 and Falcon 4.0 just 24 years ago), this 69 year old retiree can hardly wait to fire up this beautiful current version of Microsoft Flight Simulator on an Xbox console! Who would have ever thought we'd see that happen, right?!?
    Thank you again, Squirrel, for your contribution to the flight sim community with your excellent videos! I very much appreciate your efforts and I wish you the best!

    Also a good rule when calculating anything with flying is to use the worst case for best results rule. Meaning always use the calculation or numbers that are more restricting. If your between 2300lb and 2100lb and your not sure you can calculate the middle ground, just go with 2300lb. Trying to figure out how much fuel you need and not totally sure, use whatever numbers in your calculation that make you need more fuel. Basically, always play it safe and never cut it close.

    I am current serving military aircrew, and having been through ground school I never fully understood Vx and Vy until you explained it like that in this video. I have to say for anyone who is a non-aviator watching this, this level of tuition is really excellent and unfortunately is not often achieved to such a standard. Top class videos that I think a lot of people will benefit from!

    Hi. These tutorials are so helpful to a newbie like myself. Like all good tuition, they are valuable when you go back to the early lessons after having made progress. You may have done this already and I have missed it, but it would be useful (certainly to me) if you took us through the Microsoft flight tutorials and explained "on the hoof". Two areas that would benefit are "Deadstick Landing" and "Landing Without Elevator", which I know present unrealistic difficulties for us beginners. Keep up the good work!

    As a flight instructor I love the realism you out into simulation , however you are using a Cessna 172 model N performance chart for the Cessna 172sp, the SP has a more powerful engine and short field take offs are done with 10 percent flaps . Other then that good stuff as usual !

    • @dunhillsupramk3
      @dunhillsupramk3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i do believe fight instructors like yourself log the most hrs in 172s... have you ever been in 2 different 172s (same model but heavily used with a few engine rebuilds) that has the same performance??? cause i remember my 1st flight school had like 8 of the 172s and we as the students knew the faster ones from the slower ones and we was actually trying to book the faster ones for our flight sessions (i was luck enough to learn on how to recover from a stall and recover from a spin around the same time, there is nothing like going into a spin at around 1,500ft only to recover at like 600ft as a student)

    • @karlsandin4515
      @karlsandin4515 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      dunhillsupramk3 absolutely, I’ve been in the model n, m , and sp models of the 172, I absolutely agree In regards to certain lycoming io 360l2a (engine) based SPs feeling absolutely different in regards to take off and climb power, I’d assume that could be based on the tach hours and as you said perhaps an older engine vs a rebuild etc, however the usual case is down to the aircrafts equipment adding differential in the empty Weight , I know at my former school we had a few with air conditioning and other with a variations in the avionics etc . You’d be surprised what a few extra pounds feels like in those little things, spinning at minimum maneuver altitude must have been quite the thrill ride haha

    Such a nice tutorial Video set...Beautiful rounded voice, very patiently explaining all aspects of the subject, not a hint of hauteur in the voice but a very friendly calm voice telling how to do things..., let me say the most astonishingly and beautifully made video and voice I have ever seen/heard! One may tend to take it for granted that it was made easily, casually, but no, it must have taken a huge amount of planning and trials to come up with this presentation! Thanks for the work, highly appreciated.

    Yeah Squirrel! This was great. I love how your videos are more focused on the real world of flying, vs. just another sim video. Then, you use the sim to illustrate. Thanks Paul, that adds a whole new dimension (and explains a few issues I had with trees on some runways). The simulation is very sophisticated really, that a few degrees of outside temperature will actually have an effect. I was using OnAir for a while, and of course you are always carrying a full load, so this becomes important.

    @pumpkinboyk91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing to point out that even many real world pilots don't know or forget to factor in is the fact that takeoff performance data is provided in the form of pressure altitude (based on ISA: 1013hPa at sea level) - which is not the same as your AMSL (altimeter reading). This is extremely important on days when it is particularly hot or a particularly low pressure weather system is overhead, where the aircraft performance will be massively reduced & thus a longer takeoff distance is required. Remembering to calculate your pressure altitude at the takeoff airfield will correct for this and potentially save a bit of a disaster in more extreme climates than the UK

    Excellent Squirrel! There have been a lot of comments regarding the flight model of the 172 - I think this video really highlighted that it isn't complete garbage. I am looking forward to more accurate versions of the 172 especially the steam gauge version but again the Asobo version is pretty good.

    • @yannisl8259

    • @howardforder4481
      @howardforder4481 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good comment Roy. Millions of current pilots use it for staying sharp and trying things. Practicing exactly what Squirrel is showing us and using the POH as we would in a real plane. I used previous versions of flight simulator all through my real pilot training back in the 90s and this model is better than way back then. The scenery is eye candy and the real distraction but the flight models rival or better Xplane, which was the professional pilot's choice. If the plane didn't fly like the real thing, pilots wouldn't be using them. By the way, you can use a product like Remote Flight Server to use an ipad with steam gauges even with the G1000 plane, then use the main screen for out the windshield.

    I would like to add something. At least in the simulator you, can start the takeoff roll without flaps to eliminate the extra drag, then at 30~35 knots drop 10 dagrees of flaps and takeoff :) This way you will have more IAS and more lift when flaps are at 10. :) I used to do that for every very short takeoffs in FSX :D

    • @howardforder4481

      this is a great technique in real life when you have an immediate flap setting handle. I have used it with ultralights with a flap handle. You can immediately apply flap, jump up, then retract just to get you off the ground. You still stay in ground effect as Squirrel showed us. With the 172 as with many, they are electric and too slow for such advanced and immediate application. As he shows us, always consult the POH, but this technique was taught to me by a bush pilot.

    Nice tips. I'm waiting for RPM control (blue lever) tutorial.

    I recon these kind of takeoffs require a proper yoke or at least a hotas joystick to execute. My “on the coach” console controller approach has hit its limits here. :)

    Would be so cool to get a VTOL craft to this game. Something like Osprey, or even better, Harrier/F35.

    Thank you for all the great content and knowledge passed. Can I put in a request for a tutorial on rudder usage during flight or during landing please? When would you use your rudder when banking and would you use it on final to assist crabbing?

    Thank you for all your tutorials. I wonder what will you say about one grassy landing site located near my home town. I'm talking about EPZR. It is NOT level at all. You have to take off down hill and always land on it up the hill. It could be quite challenging. The area is in my opinion also very pretty.

      Thank you for this comment. I went to EZPR near your home town and took off with soft field technique as Squirrel taught. I made the takeoff with no trouble, but the first landing disturbed some of your neighbors. The second was better - about half the field. Beautiful country! I did my dead-stick landings and takeoffs on a 4000 foot grass strip in a C150 with about an inch of snow along the Delaware River in New York. This brought back fond memories. After landing my instructor told me to keep moving if I wanted to get back out of there. If I'd stopped, well ...
      Thanks, Squirrel, for this perfectly paced lesson.

    Stupid question but, how did you move backwards?

      It's call Pushback. The shortcut for it is Shift+P.

      Michael Plamondon Thank you... I thought you had to have the guy in front of you to get a push back.

      Nope. It's best for realism though. I'm not sure if you can steer. In fsx it was shift p then after a short moment 1 or 2 for steering. Never tested it in fs2020.

    This tutorial (#11) doesn't seem to appear in your MSFS Tutorial Playlist. When I follow that link, I only see tutorials 1-10. Just flagging, 'cause these videos are brilliant, and I don't want to miss any!

    Squirrel, would you mind doing an RNAV approach tutorial?
    It seems like nobody can get it to work right (glidepath, specifically, is either running you into the ground a mile early or not being picked up until 30 seconds before touchdown). There are a few people on the forums who swear they have no trouble with RNAV approaches, so I'm wondering if the vast majority are just missing something critical, or if MSFS's RNAV data is incorrect.
