When in my early 20's I started pilot training, accomplishing my solo in a Cessna 150 without crashing. Then I got married and ran out of money - so no more flight training. :-( Now at 65, Squirrel is making me feel like I'm back in the cockpit with my instructor receiving tips. I loved the PAT and APT tips and I'm looking forward to the next tutorial. Thank you for doing this!

@@Sanctifiers It could be a problem with your Yoke or sidestick. There is a fine tuning within MFS where you can not only set this, but also compensate for bad behaviour of your controls. There is a dedicated SENSITIVITY buttom for it

@@aarobriggs2665 well it mostly does it with the jets, particularly the learjet. props aren't too terribly bad. the jets are just wild, extreme pulls either direction. I've tried literally every combination of settings, turning wind off, calibrated controller, adjusted sensitivity and dead zone. Nothing works.
Many student pilots who are just starting will easily go through a full (often more than one) flying lesson, with their instructor explaining those concepts, word for word, to a T, exactly as shown. Those of you watching have just received some 24 minutes of first-rate primary flight instruction.

You do a great job of explaining flight. I am an aircraft mechanic and it is nice to see someone able to explain things like this to people that have little to no knowledge and also people that know how all this works and I still learned something. Thank you.
Even though I've been "playing" flight sim for over 20 years, I had never taken it to learn it seriously until Flight Sim 2020. I *thought* I knew how to use yoke, throttle, and trim so initial was tempted to skip ahead to important bits in the video. What I can is that all of it is important - this 25 minute video will give you many more hours of enjoyment flying because you will actually know what you are doing than thinking you know (and getting frustrated when the airplane doesn't move they way you think it should) Thanks much Squirrel, the PAT and APT was eye opening for someone who had been *playing* for long time and wanted to start getting into "simming"
And this, lads and laddies, is why I love Squirrel so much. He can be fun and games in one video and be full on mr serious in another. Squirrel, seriously hats off, you do have a talent in being a good teacher. Even though I myself personally know about most of this stuff already, it still is a good reminder even for experienced folk to know the basics. The way you explain things, in a "James May" kind of fashion but still maintain the interests is pure gold. Not a lot of people are able to do this right. As someone who is still relatively new to flight simming these tutorials are helping me immensely. The flight model is totally different to FSX. I'm learning to fly all over again. Edit: Yeah, I was chasing the needle. Bad habit. Gotta stop that.
One of the biggest rules is don’t chase your instruments panels. Also, 90% eyes outside of the cockpit. The horizon is your biggest tool when flying a plane

@@bravocharlie24 maybe, but it's done it since the fresh install and hasn't quit. Other people have had the same issue. I was just hoping someone would tell me some setting to adjust that I might've missed.
Masonic Youth I don’t know what to tell you. I, myself, is having difficulty to install the game itself lol. I updated every single driver out there already. But I’m stuck it where it says “click any key to start”. Once I do, it says to create a Xbox game pass account. Do I need to do that?
Oh wow, I get it! I finally get it! I've never taken IRL flight instructions, but I've flown in sim a ton and watched plenty of instructional videos on this and your explanation playing while I'm flying the same aircraft in sim really helped. I'm kind of amazed that I can do an attitude level decent now. This should really help clean up my landings, lol. It's actually like having you with me in the right seat while I'm doing this, lol. Thank you!

I have to say, your videos are the best for learning. The in game tutorials are anxiety inducing, the way you structure the exercise, you just feel like you have plenty of time and space to practice! And it is way more fun to just jump in the plane and play around. You do a great job of explaining the theory as well as to why the aircraft is behaving the way it is. From now on this is how I will be practicing!

Many moons ago I flew Grob 109s, running out of money before I ran out of tuition, unfortunately. Years later Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 has reminded me of just how much I love to fly. I've used your tuition videos as both a much needed refresher of the basics as well as getting flap usage sorted out - the Grob 109s have air brakes, no flaps, so I never got into using flaps. That's being remedied in a big way now! Your style of tuition and transference of vital knowledge is excellent. Plus I've really appreciated your explanations of the FS2020 options and settings to get aircraft to respond more like the real thing. Sharing your valuable experience and the work you have put into creating these tutorials is very much appreciated. Thanks.
These tutorials have helped so much with flying for the first time in the sim, I went in knowing nothing about how to fly an aircraft and I can now complete basic flights with the Cessna 152 without assists! I would love to see a tutorial on how to use the navigation systems in the aircraft with things like VOR (I fiddled with the system a bit but would love an in-depth explanation). Thank you for the great videos!
Mr. Squirrel. This series is the best, most detailed and informative tutorials I have ever seen for a sim. As a newbie to gaming in general and to the whole flight sim world, it is overwhelming to see how much immersion there can be in MSFS and flight sims. I've only been trying sims out since like February, but this is by far the best explanation of the power, attitude, trim relationship I've seen. You are so much more informative on how to actually pilot the planes in this game than the in-game flight school, which doesn't really get into a lot of helpful detail about how to best use power and trim.

I spent hours in 'Microsoft, a century of flight' trying to apply these concepts, in the end I gave up because I didn't have a 'yoke' in 24 minutes you have clearly and easily explained to me I didn't need a 'yoke' just a joystick and the 'proper technique' ..... Also now I need to buy a £3030 computer and the game, thank you and damn you... I really want this simulator now, best explanation ever. 10/10
A yoke is nice but I like to think about it this way, if Airbus's are all equipped with a sidestick then a joystick is more than enough for a simulator.

Thank you!! Im a complete flight sim newb and know very little about planes and felt the instructor in "training" assumes you know most this stuff already. You explained the goals, how to achieve them, and why it works the way it does. The instructor just says "do this, press this" okay, why? I figured a flight sim would do a better job explaining more concept than controls but you are way better than the so-called "training" this game provides.
14:40 - If you already knew this stuff then wonderful. Well I did but it was still nice to watch a practical demonstration and have it confirmed by someone who understands it properly. I'm currently learning MSFS and I'm actually finding it easier to learn the basic mechanics in a Jet over a GAA, there's no prop wash constantly pulling you left to deal with.
Another great video explaining and demonstrating things very clearly, my big take away from this is throttle is not speed and pitch is. Just done a night landing at Nice and landing is so much easier using the throttle to descend and ending up at a much better speed on approach and landing. Still having major trouble with the trim violently swigging one way and then other, have managed to get it correct a few times now though so probably just a lot more practice needed.
Wonderful tutorial, especially for someone like me who just wants to get some basic concepts in order to be able to safely fly around some POIs around the globe. I just wanted to add that if you want a little help and/or you find the instruments difficult to read - go to external camera mode. In that mode - you get these big and clear digital, on screen indicators for the Airspeed, Altitude, Trim, Flaps and Vertical speed. That makes it easier to read the indicators - though obviously, the whole point of this tutorial is to practice like an actual pilot - from within the cockpit.
I've already flown from my local town to some major cities nearby but I am going back to learn the basics haha this game is giving me motivation to go get my pilot's license
These are excellent videos. Microsoft should have used these in their MSFS 2020 Tutorials instead of the vague, incomplete rubbish ones they are using. I agree with what you said. None of the sim yoke’s have any feed back so you have to trim via the trim wheel which is not the way to do it. About time the manufacturers did something about it. No doubt at a cost!

On one of my lessons after takeoff at 1500 feet the engine quit. After shitting my pants I went through the engine out checklist. I thought it was real, but my instructor laughed. I got through that lesson learning it well. You are a great teacher! I enjoy your content a great deal. I don’t currently have a PC that will run this sim but I flew a lot on FS9. I want to thank you for the time you are spending making this great content.
Stefan, hope you get a rig soon. Mine is a few years old now, but was top 5% when I built it. A Ryzen 1800x & GTX 1080 (non-TI). MFSF runs just fine - okay the visuals outside aren't as good - no shadows on the ground for example. But VFR is still great and I'm not planing on upgrading my GPU until the RTX 3000s are out - I think then the technology and games that use it should have matured to the point where an upgrade is justifiable.
Actually, in a real C152, moving the trim wheel does change the position of the yoke. It’s because the trim tab on the elevator controls the angle at which the elevator “flies” relative to the fixed horizontal stabilizer. Since the yoke is connected to the elevator via cables, the yoke moves with the elevator. Also, you don’t fly the plane with the trim; you make pitch changes using the yoke and then “trim” the pressure off your arm with the trim wheel.
This is an excellent tutorial. One thing I will add for those who are attempting to practice the steps outlined, is it should be practiced in the planes used by Squirrel for two reasons. One is the Cessna planes have been modeled more than any other GA aircraft so the flight dynamics are very solid meaning you can expect to get out what you put in. On that same note, and my second point, is your success is dependent on your controls being setup (calibrated) properly or at least as close as possible, otherwise it could be a frustrating experience. And if you need to calibrate your controls and tweak the sensitivity it is best done using the Cessna models used - and I can speak from experience. I strongly encourage newbies and even seasons vets new to MSFS to start with the 152 and 172 to ensure your controls are set properly before moving on to other more challenging planes...all IMO of course. AE

@@Sanctifiers Have you checked the flaps position. sometimes when you start it's in a lift angle. Trying to trim and keep stable flight is hard with the flaps.
@@Porkobosso nah, covered all that. Someone mentioned aileron and rudder trim, checked that but some planes don't have that option. This issue isn't vertical stability, I can stabilize that. It's a roll/bank to the left or right. So I'm still trying to figure it out.
@@Sanctifiers if youre playing with a controller you can set up the deadzone for the sticks in the controllers sensitivity options that solved it for me
This is so informative. Thanks. The controlled descents will be very handy. I always go into the landing pattern way too fast. I've noticed it tends to be 92 knots in the C172 when it wants me to be at around 65 knots.

This might have been by far the best explanation of these concepts I’ve seen in a flight sim video having watched enough of them over many years.
Having done most of my PPL training in a 152 I'd like to emphasise Squirrel's statement that trimming is waaaaay easier in a real plane,

This is by far, the greatest MSFS2020 Tutor out there, brilliant voice and brilliant knowledge with the aircraft. Felt like I was talking an actual legitimate lesson. I plan to follow up w/ these type of videos Squirrel is making.

You are so much more informative on how to actually pilot the planes in this game than the in-game flight school, which doesn't really get into a lot of helpful detail about how to best use power and trim.

I spent hours in 'Microsoft, a century of flight' trying to apply these concepts, in the end I gave up because I didn't have a 'yoke' in 24 minutes you have clearly and easily explained to me I didn't need a 'yoke' just a joystick and the 'proper technique' ..... Also now I need to buy a £3030 computer and the game, thank you and damn you... I really want this simulator now, best explanation ever. 10/10
A yoke is nice but I like to think about it this way, if Airbus's are all equipped with a sidestick then a joystick is more than enough for a simulator.
Just watched this tutorial on stable flight and really enjoyed it. This series of tutorials might actually stop me kangaroo hopping across the virtual skies like I do at the moment. Am looking forward to watching the rest. Well done !

Thank you!! Im a complete flight sim newb and know very little about planes and felt the instructor in "training" assumes you know most this stuff already.
You explained the goals, how to achieve them, and why it works the way it does. The instructor just says "do this, press this" okay, why? I figured a flight sim would do a better job explaining more concept than controls but you are way better than the so-called "training" this game provides.

Well I did but it was still nice to watch a practical demonstration and have it confirmed by someone who understands it properly.
I'm currently learning MSFS and I'm actually finding it easier to learn the basic mechanics in a Jet over a GAA, there's no prop wash constantly pulling you left to deal with.
Actually, there are 4 forces that cause a plane to pull to the left. And you should learn to use your feet in an airplane.
So sad the tutorials seem to have ended. Among the best I have seen
Another great video explaining and demonstrating things very clearly, my big take away from this is throttle is not speed and pitch is. Just done a night landing at Nice and landing is so much easier using the throttle to descend and ending up at a much better speed on approach and landing.
Still having major trouble with the trim violently swigging one way and then other, have managed to get it correct a few times now though so probably just a lot more practice needed.
This should be required to see for all flight simmers. Nicely done.

Wonderful tutorial, especially for someone like me who just wants to get some basic concepts in order to be able to safely fly around some POIs around the globe.
I just wanted to add that if you want a little help and/or you find the instruments difficult to read - go to external camera mode. In that mode - you get these big and clear digital, on screen indicators for the Airspeed, Altitude, Trim, Flaps and Vertical speed. That makes it easier to read the indicators - though obviously, the whole point of this tutorial is to practice like an actual pilot - from within the cockpit.

I agree with what you said. None of the sim yoke’s have any feed back so you have to trim via the trim wheel which is not the way to do it. About time the manufacturers did something about it. No doubt at a cost!

On one of my lessons after takeoff at 1500 feet the engine quit. After shitting my pants I went through the engine out checklist. I thought it was real, but my instructor laughed. I got through that lesson learning it well. You are a great teacher! I enjoy your content a great deal. I don’t currently have a PC that will run this sim but I flew a lot on FS9. I want to thank you for the time you are spending making this great content.
Stefan, hope you get a rig soon. Mine is a few years old now, but was top 5% when I built it. A Ryzen 1800x & GTX 1080 (non-TI). MFSF runs just fine - okay the visuals outside aren't as good - no shadows on the ground for example. But VFR is still great and I'm not planing on upgrading my GPU until the RTX 3000s are out - I think then the technology and games that use it should have matured to the point where an upgrade is justifiable.

Actually, in a real C152, moving the trim wheel does change the position of the yoke. It’s because the trim tab on the elevator controls the angle at which the elevator “flies” relative to the fixed horizontal stabilizer. Since the yoke is connected to the elevator via cables, the yoke moves with the elevator. Also, you don’t fly the plane with the trim; you make pitch changes using the yoke and then “trim” the pressure off your arm with the trim wheel.

I got a private pilot lesson in 2012 and never flew after that. This brings me back memories. It was on a Tupi though, not a Cessna.

This is an excellent tutorial. One thing I will add for those who are attempting to practice the steps outlined, is it should be practiced in the planes used by Squirrel for two reasons. One is the Cessna planes have been modeled more than any other GA aircraft so the flight dynamics are very solid meaning you can expect to get out what you put in. On that same note, and my second point, is your success is dependent on your controls being setup (calibrated) properly or at least as close as possible, otherwise it could be a frustrating experience. And if you need to calibrate your controls and tweak the sensitivity it is best done using the Cessna models used - and I can speak from experience. I strongly encourage newbies and even seasons vets new to MSFS to start with the 152 and 172 to ensure your controls are set properly before moving on to other more challenging planes...all IMO of course. AE

this video just blew my mind wide open. It was like a switch just flipped on a few things. esp with the throttle controlling altitude more than speed, and the pitch controlling speed more than altitude etc. very interesting.

Any idea why the plane constantly tries to roll to the left or right and won't fly straight and stable low to the ground? I try adjusting every setting on the plane and AI but nothing works. I just want to be able to fly straight closer to the ground.
@@Sanctifiers Have you checked the flaps position. sometimes when you start it's in a lift angle. Trying to trim and keep stable flight is hard with the flaps.
@@Porkobosso nah, covered all that. Someone mentioned aileron and rudder trim, checked that but some planes don't have that option. This issue isn't vertical stability, I can stabilize that. It's a roll/bank to the left or right. So I'm still trying to figure it out.
Masonic Youth adjust the sensitivity in settings, that fixed it to an extent
@@Sanctifiers if youre playing with a controller you can set up the deadzone for the sticks in the controllers sensitivity options

This is so informative. Thanks. The controlled descents will be very handy. I always go into the landing pattern way too fast. I've noticed it tends to be 92 knots in the C172 when it wants me to be at around 65 knots.
