      I agree, the in-game training is very disappointing. It feels like a rushed afterthought and taught me more or less nothing.

    Absolutely the best discussion of the important elements of a good approach and landing that I have ever heard; I have my Pilots Certificate and IFR rating as well as more years of experience than I want to admit to, so I think I can have an informed opinion. Really. Really well done. Like everything else that we do, understanding the fundamentals and using those skills everyday is the way we improve. So thanks for this video. I’ll be sending lots of friends over to your channel. And I’ve liked and subscribed. Thanks again.

  • @BigBudzGaming
    @BigBudzGaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You can also program the nav to give you a good approach as the default route is a straight line with no thought given to landing, use auto pilot and set your altitude. Once you get to final approach press the approach button and it should guide you down nice and straight. All you gotta do is manage speed and pull back on yoke when you’re about to touch down. Doing it this way also gets you a achievement. The cessna 172 is probably the easiest to program the navigation system on

    I used to fail fail and continuously fail to land any plane successfully before watching this video.
    So simple explanation and such a good teacher.
    At times, I forget to bring the wheels down, but landings are pitch perfect. And I do circus things like dropping off from 1000s of feet just near, about 5 kms to runway and try to adjust for a perfect landing. Mostly successful.
    Either way, it's your Xbox and your game. Do take risks and BE PATIENT.

    As a pilot flying a pa28, I actually learnt in a C150/152. Couple of things we are taught which should add , regarding trim … we follow the Acronym PAT .. Power.. Attitude .. Trim … you set the power for cruise (usually 2300-2400rpm) … get the attitude for straight and level .. and then trim so you can essentially fly hands off. To land …. On finals (if it’s properly realistic£ you need carb heat below 2000rpm , can be 30 degrees outside , but you will get carb icing… and that’s not good !! Set power to around 1500 rpm and use teim again .. here’s the important bit … you do not need to point the nose up or down. If the plane is trimmed right .. you control your decent with power … so on finals your aiming for 60-65 knots … once at that speed trim to that speed … so then when you increase power , you will arrest … or increase your decent by pulling power back.
    Once over the runway .. power fully off .. hold stick back a touch … ground effect will lower your stall speed and angle of attack will naturally lift the nose so you land.
    Another great tip .., if in cockpit view .. on finals .. sim to keep the runway as it gets closer in exactly the same spot in your screen … do that abs toy will always land on the runway … then it’s just a case of looking at its profile to judge if too high or low … or off runway has PAPI LIGHTS … 2 red 2 green is perfect. Hope that helps

    Commenting a bit late on this I know but a couple things:
    First, Great video! Someone should pay this man to be an instructor.
    Secondly, with the Xbox I've found the throttle to be the most difficult thing to manage, particularly when using the cockpit view.
    I rectified this by using a wireless USB keyboard and assigning throttle percentages to the number keys. 1 is 10%, 2 is 20% and so on with 0 being 100%. This has revolutionized my landings.
    Note that by default those keys control ATC responses. I cleared those. I use a wireless mouse for that.
    Hope this helps anyone who's interested.

    Can you do a turbo prop tutorial? More specifically how to use the blue lever. Every time I fly a turbo prop my range is half of what it shows on the world map.

    • @rotor13
      @rotor13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The blue lever is for the propeller, you adjust it for a specific RPM - from my studies, only for setting cruise RPM and subsequently makes less noise. The throttle is what you actually adjust for proper fuel flow and economy, as well of course the fuel levers. At cruise, you want to be anywhere between 60-70% power and adjust the fuel mixture levers accordingly

      @@Axle1324 Blue lever will change the RPM, throttles will change the manifold pressure.

    • @thatdude7652
      @thatdude7652 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i just want to clarify this, cause i think that people might still see this. The blackleveris the throttle, which will change your power, the blue lever is your rpm which will also reduce the rotation speed of your engine through angling the prop blade. Once you are at cruise, you bring this to give you the most rpm without getting into the reds. Then there is the fuel lever, which is usually red. This will affect fuel usage and eventually rpm. The way to set this properly is once you are at cruise keep bringing it down until you notice a drop in rpm, then you bring it up a little so the rpm stabilizes. You are now at optimal fuel and rpm. P.S. the moment you change the throttle this must be redone

      One thing to add about flaps. They can also be used to quickly lose altitude if you're coming in way too high and your plane doesnt have speed brakes. Basically use the flaps as speed brakes, to allow you to point down at the target, lose a heck of a lot of altitude, without gaining too much speed.
      I once went from 12k feet to 2k feet when i was on final approach this way.
      It's dicey, but a great trick.

      @@giannis_tar The way the planes fly is very accurate. While you can't learn to fly well just from a sim, you can learn so much about the way the systems work. When I took my first flight lesson I was doing things like adjusting the trim without him telling me how. "How do you know to do that?" "Flight sim", haha. What you really lack is the feel. So much of flying is feeling what the plane is doing and you just have to fly a real one to get that.

      On the PC version that Airport is fine, prob just a preview glitch. MSFS2020 still has bugs that are being ironed out even in the PC version and you can visit their forums, wishlist or roadmap snap shots to see what's happening and what they are working on.

    Very good. I think that before trying a landing, learners first need to learn to fly SLOWLY. Learn to fly just above stall, high enough to allow recovery. Lots of people are scared to fly slow. But this is imperative for landings.

    Really loved the video man, out all of the different ones I’ve seen this not only describes what to do but the reason behind it. Really loved it! If you want any suggestions for other videos, I would really love to see the process of starting a Cessna from a cold start and actually taking it off from the cockpit view. Or explaining takeoff and landing from other planes like a Boeing 777 and others. REALLY NICE VIDEO.

    Thanks for your video, great help and can’t wait to try this. Just to check, at what point do you stop trimming? Just before touchdown or somewhere in the threshold? The bit I struggle with is just before the wheels hitting runway doing the bobbing up and down. Thanks in advance 👍

    This video along with the previous 'getting started' video are both absolutely fantastic but have also created a dilemma. I feel confident that an Xbox Controller combined with my Logitech wireless keyboard with built in trackpad will be perfectly adequate to use for this game and I'm sorely tempted to send back my unopened HOTAS. I'm not convinced the HOTAS with only having the one stick will be as good when using external cameras or looking around the cockpit. Great informative videos though that explain everything in complete layman's terms for a noob to be like me.

    • @Marc-ps9dn
      @Marc-ps9dn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so many cameras that you can just map em to your hotas as well. The controller is more or less used for the drone if you just want to want use it for that. Happy flying!

    • @Bendigo1
      @Bendigo1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im pretty sure you can use both hotas and controller together. Hotas makes smaller inputs much easier. On pc i use hotas to fly and the controller for extra buttons.

      Having bought the PC version on its release day, I agree it can look intimidating. I started off learning how to fly the sim in this very aircraft and as my "skills" improved, I ventured onto larger props then small jets. After 140 hours of flying I am about to embark on the largest passenger jets. All it needs is a lot of practice AND patience early on and it becomes very rewarding. Good luck.

      I never played a flight sim before. Just turn on all assists and you’ll notice that after some time you’ll be getting cozier with the controls and will be turning them off one by one. It’s very easy to learn, lots of support.

    Man, I have the game preloaded on my Xbox, I'm so pumped to play, but holy shit, this sounds complicated as fuck! It's actually got me kind of intimidated to even play. I know it's a complete different realm of flying, but, I play a space sim called Elite Dangerous, and my experience with flying and landing in that game has always given me hope of flying in MSFS but damn man, this seems really involved and really kind of complicated. I hope I can learn this shit.
