    Hey, man, just wanted to say, I don't watch all your videos, but your art has come a long way since I first saw your stuff. All this training and everything is paying off. It's inspiring for myself as an artist and I wish you nothing but the best to you in the future!

      Draw what you’re bad at until you’re good at it. For me that’s noses, lots and lots of noses.

    • @Vet4FallujahCJ
      @Vet4FallujahCJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything and everything. Perspective isn't suited for just faces, bodies and characters. We need perspective in order to understand form. And once we grasp form, drawing everything else becomes the same process. You are never wasting your time drawing, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. If you are weak in one area over the rest, that will develop as well, the more you draw using shapes, perspective and repetition.
      Just my thoughts on it

  • @williamb4426

    Hi man, kinda late to the party but I have two questions. How much time do you think I should spend on each expression ? (some limit or until I'm more or less happy with the result ?) And what kind of brush do you use ? I'm on procreate and I can't seem to find a brush that I like for loose sketching and shading ^^"

      pretty sure he's using sketchbook pro, i remember him talking about it in another video. Sorry to preach, but keep in mind you can make any program work for you, Painter, photoshop, procreate, sketchbook pro, clip studio, they all have their strengths but it really comes down to your personal preference of tools and menus, because each program has the capability of making a brush pretty much exactly how you want it.

    A technical question here; how do you memorise those expressions or do you remember key components of facial expressions and simply produce the various expressions through knowledge of facial muscles? I have only just restarted with drawing and I have trouble drawing expressions from scratch without using a method that I had to create to make it easier.

    • @Leo-mu8kn
      @Leo-mu8kn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The second variable. Its the same principle as gesture drawing, I'm nowhere near as his level but as I keep practicing gesture drawing and anatomy stuff, coming up with all kinds of people doing things keeps getting easier

    • @radronin6538
      @radronin6538 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      some people break things down in 2d or 3d shapes they can remember simple forms. And lots of practice

    • @SubNorm4L
      @SubNorm4L 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an actual system with combinations of muscles for all the expressions. Look for that. The eyebrows, the nose and the mouth do not have THAT many actions. You can easily memorise them and their arrangement when doing certain expressions. After that, it's all about mileage.

    • @sewerat2947

      He didn't. He's using noah and rachel bradley's expressions reference pack

    • @TheMusicalString

      In Scott McCloud's "Making Comics," He argues that expressions are like a palette of colors and consist of only 6 major expressions (or colors); anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise. Each of those have specific facial mechanics to express themselves, and by varying the intensity (or saturation) of those mechanics you can express different levels of anger, from sternness to rage, for example. Then you can start combining those "primary" emotions together to blend new emotions, such as "disgust" and "anger" to produce "fear," and in varying intensities, such as "mild joy" and "mild sadness" to produce "pity." It's been a useful way to think about it for me, so maybe it will be helpful for you. I'd say focus on learning those 6 primary emotions and how they're formed by the face's muscles, and from there you can extrapolate all the rest (that's the assumption I'm trying to learn under at least!).

    Obviously you are familiar with Paul Ekman's work. He wasn't an artist but made hundreds of photos of human face emotions. I have 2 of his books on my shelf to use as reference when I want to convey the proper emotions. You have added head tilt to show attitude and contempt. A person's stance and whether it is closed or open is important as well. I would also like to add Chase Hughes as a resource. He didn't even use photos, only words. His book "The Ellipsis Manual" is virtually an encyclopedia of human expression and how people express their inner feelings.
