The Lawsuits That Killed Goosebumps
"Goosebumps" began as a children's horror book series in the early 1990s, quickly morphing into a worldwide cultural phenomena. The books were best sellers, the TV series was top-rated, and the merch was plentiful. But as the franchise was hitting its peak, a series of lawsuits materialized that threatened to destroy the entire brand.

I never read until goosebumps when I was in the 4th grade in 94. Two years in a row I read the most books in my school. I credit RL Stine and his books are the king of nostalgia for me.
But Goosebumps is back but for grown ups at least it was back but I can't wait to hear this I didn't know that Goosebumps had any lawsuits
Stay out of the basement was the one that scared me as a kid
Goosebumps was my favorite series in 2007-2008, I remember watching it on TV and reading the books in the library. Probably got a lil later cuz I'm in Brazil, but it had a lasting impact on me to this day. ❤ R.L. Stine deserves better, I hope he continues writing for children.
How did that all happen before I was even born (in '96)!?😭
Hollywood stopped taking chances in the early 2000s until now, trying to play it safe by cranking out boring film after boring film. Most of the truly great films are in the 20th century.
39 I used to have a collection of these
Goosebumps were the reason I read a lot when I was younger. Thanks R.L Stine.
Incredible writers, but incredibly bad contract readers, lol
can you make a video on the canon film group?
im 21 and the only reason why i ever wanted to learn how to read was so i could get the goosebumps books. I only had one, the werewolf of fever swamp. I ended up with one of his standalone thrillers, hit and run. from what i remember it was pretty good
I was so sad when Zoog was rebranded in 2002
Despite all that corporate stuff going on back then! still R.L Stine can't be taken as something worrier of materialistics things anyway as he was anyway a man very different and far more above than this money things! If u can get it what vibe am trying to say here!
One thing you failed to mention was the original Fox Family movie, Night of the Twisters. It was a really solid film if you enjoy cheese and really fit in with the channel, IMO. Au Pair was great, but NotT was pretty ambitious for a TV movie.
I was born in 89 goosebumps was one of my favourites started at five until which all i had read was information on dinosaurs on a leaflet that went into a folder And asops fables I quickly moved onto animorphs after expending the roster on goosebumps with the one where a kid gets the ability to fly and another where the kid gets a werewolf costume for halloween that makes him an actual werewolf as standouts And the first pick a path set in the carnival Animorphs i loved pretty sure i read every book by K A Applegate But it was Tolkien and Raymond E Feist that made me love books set on a granderscope The magician is awesome Of course these days i read Peter F Hamilton though his common wealth saga and nights dawn trillogy are the peak of his works
I didnt read much as a kid but i bought them because of the covers my personal favorite being the mummy, knowing young me its because he looked like a ninja
I have tried to get me preteen to watch these with me......sadly he doesnt like them at all 😅
Im literally still hunting the original series in secondhand book shops so i can read them to my son as he gets older it was my favorite series as a kid
You said "a phenomena" three times. Phenomenon is singular, phenomena is plural.
You do great summaries! You certainly deserve more subscribers.
Huh, R.L Stine is a real person. It's such a cheesy creepy sounding name that I always assumed it was made up and they were all ghost-written.
That was Amanda Seals @3:36 😂
Disappointing that 17 and on were made by ghost writers, between me and my brothers we prob had 40 of em. Never bothered with the spin off books though, I watched the TV show a lot.
It wasn’t even scary it was just good writing.
3:39 “bookFAIRS” okay, gil faizon
I don't care what anyone says, Maximum Overdrive is a great movie. Someone finally made a recreation of the Green Goblin truck a few years ago.
Declining sales was due to saturation and that kids aged out of it.
The “ghost writer” graphic made me laugh every time
So greedy execs ruined something innocent and well intended for children. Shocker. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Red Lobster Stine. 🦞
Sales declined due to the snowflake generation. Kids were deterred from reading those kinds of books and parents didn’t like buying them for kids. Even my parents scoffed at goosebumps books I read when I was in school. I read so many and honestly I would read them again at my current age of 35 and very much plan on showing them to my step son and future kids. Long live goosebumps, a series of unfortunate events and the halo novel series.
Sounds like Stine and his wife got greedy. You get help from scholastic when you were nothing..then want a lot more when they made you
People laugh when theys see my goosebumps books on my shelf but they were a massive part of my life, used to have a cereal box top thing at school that gave you a free book if you collected enough box tops, was a thing to get you eating "good" grains and into reading, i took the goosebumps books everytime, quite proud of how much effort i put into collecting them tbh, never knew any of this happened though
A jew joking about being "much to greedy", yet still skirting around legal written agreements. The jokes write themselves sometimes lol.
R.L. Stine is the author of childrens horror books. The covers of the book gives the stories a more flair. I remember the first Goosebumps book I read. I was hooked. The tv show came. That was good. The Girl That Cried Monster, Don't Go Dawn in the Basement. I even liked the movies. I think it could make a comeback. Stine sounds like a nice guy. Goosebumps forever.
these books used to give me crazy nightmares 😭😭
I'm 40. Dope find. These books were a huge part of my childhood. The covers were the draw in
I remember every year for elementary the book fair would come around and I’d always have my money saved up to buy 2 goosebump books I had a whole collection .
Goosebumps and are you afraid of the dark...what a time
Loved reading these books to my kids.
I like your content brother 👊 I hope you continue to make more videos
Disney is a hypocrite
finding out that RL Stine and Scholastic were fighting feels like finding out that Jacksepticeye and Markiplier unfollowed each other
I was born in 2000 and remember me and my twin binging these books/tv shows when we were kids. I think series like this really got me into my love of reading and especially reading as many books as I can. As an adult I still mainly read horror books and love horror, and though I don't read anywhere near as much as I did as a kid, I still believe the Goosebumps series had a huge part of my life. Still a horror lover, still love books.
I remember picking up my first goosebumps book in 6th grade, piano lessons can be murder. Maybe it wasn’t the best for me to have read a book about a piano teacher who taught kids, only to kill them and take their hands so they can play forever. But I loved those books and was hooked immediately!
Let's not forget that recently they came out with the new goosebumps tv series that were pumped full of lgbtq nonsense, and rl stines modern prints are heavily censored, things that rl stines has openly expressed his unhappiness about.
An R L Stine and Stephen King collaboration would of been amazing!!
Besides the Goosebumps series the only other good kids horror books were Scary stories to tell in the dark. Definitely preferred Goosebumps of the two though. lol
This was my introduction to horror. Read these books late at night when I should have been sleeping. ❤
It Smells like Pokémon cards and goosebumps books in here
