    Thanks for this talk! So informative. We don't have hard water, but citric acid gives my bar soap such a luxurious feeling. I might start using it in all my bar soaps. Definitely going to try it in liquid soap as well. Soapee also changed their calc now to make the calculations for adding citrc acid.

      Thanks for watching and commenting Irene. Oh yes I understand, it will definitely help, if you can get your hands on sodium gluconate that works even better. You can use it with citric acid also, just add the dissolved sodium gluconate at emulsion and blend in well. Works extremely well with Citric acid, 1% of each is good if using both 🙏

      @@DawnOrganics thoroughly enjoyed! Thankyou. Such a good video and you know it was fabulous to hear you speak of the importance of adding in the purity of the sodium hydroxide because that is something I realised about a year after beginning my soap making journey when I started using a different lye calculator than soapcalc for the first time (I use soapee) and it asked for the purity! (mine is from bunnings and is 98% purity), it was then that i realised all my previous batches I'd made through soapcalc were off and my superfats had been 2% higher than i thought they had been. Also I have never heard another soapmaker even mention this! So important particulary when making dish soaps or when like me using a highish superfat to begin with for my recipe., as i don't want them too high. Interestingly to me also is that you make soap similarly to the way I do, I add sugar, sea salt, sodium lactate and citric acid now so our processes are quite similar. Great minds ;) haha. Anyway enough of my excited soapy ramblings lol, much love George and thanks again for a great video! Oh one last thing, your audio is sounding much improved too, just wanted to mention that. Great job xo Holly

      Thanks so much Holly. Head to www.dawnorganics.com.au/blogs/posts/faq-regarding-soap-additives I explain in more detail there regarding GSE & Natural vitamin E
      I too faced those issues at the beginning with lye calculators, the values we're vastly different compared to LyeCalc when adjusting the lye purity. Oh yes. they are just must have additives, they are all inexpensive but necessary. Especially if you're planning to sell them, they need to function optimally. Even for hobby soap making, why not create a premium bar for yourself. Thanks for commenting and watching, and no drama I appreciate soap rambling, I do that a lot too, haha. 😂🙏🙏🙏

      Thank you. That's a hard one to work out, making it more complicated I think, better just to follow lyecalc.com and follow the correct values. Otherwise you'll have to work out by increasing the superfat and finding the difference between a higher superfat lye amount and the extra lye needed for citric acid in your recipe. Either way you'll need to use the lye calc to get the values needed

    Thanks for another awesome soapy tech tutorial George. I always learn something from you - it's great. Just a question regarding washing up. When I use normal soap to hand wash a few dishes the soap always turns the water white and if I have normal dishwashing liquid in the sink it sort of makes any dishwashing liquid bubbles disappear. Would this be because of superfat in the soap? I've always found using a home made soap for dishwashing a less than steller experience shall we say. Mainly because of the lack of bubbles. It does a brilliant job washing the sink afterwards though and makes it shine like new.

    • @kathya739
      @kathya739 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sure George will weigh in, but my personal experience is that bubbles are not an indicator of how well a dish or laundry soap is working, though I do like bubbles;). Also, because I have hard water, when I use real soap(Castile, etc), my water turns cloudy. Hope that helps alittle.

    • @DawnOrganics
      @DawnOrganics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching and comments. As Kathy stated, she is correct, it is still cleaning even if the bubbles fizzle out, also normal for castile soap to become cloudy in water, especially with a Superfat and hard water. I always recommend a 0% SF as extra oil in the bar can leave a residue behind and we want to avoid that with cleaning! Since there is no chemicals in it like commercial products, the commercial stuff tend to have additives in them to make the bubbles not pop away. Definitely give this recipe a try, pure coconut oil cleans like nothing else. I do have another video with this recipe but without using citric acid you can have a look as I do a lather test at the end 🙏🙏🙏

      It could work actually, you wouldn't want it to lye heavy, you can maybe try -5% in lyecalc and give a very small batch a try. Of course wear gloves when handling the finished product as I'm sure you know. That's actually a really good idea btw.

    • @DawnOrganics
      @DawnOrganics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you 🙏 it can be if you freeze the milks and dissolve it in. Be sure to add the lye crystals slowly. Should be fine. Also depends on how much water discount you do. The less water you use the hotter it will get. I use steep water discount so freezing is a must unless you make ultra concentrated milks like how I've been doing can add to the oil phase. If your using a little bit of milk can also add that to the oil phase without freezing. 🙏

    George. If you have time I have a question re citric acid. I have just started to masterbatch lye solution using a 1:1 or 50/50 ratio. (Thanks Simi Khabra book) its such a time saver even when making small quantities of soap. I will be then adding liquid to get a 2:1 ratio when making soap. Would I add it separately when making soap as I would need to add extra NaOH . Would i say for example add 6g NaOH in 6g Distilled water (or the quantity needed) from my liquid to be used for 2:1 ratio. then add it to my pre made lye solution i have measured out. . Thanks George

    • @DawnOrganics
      @DawnOrganics  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's never a good idea with lye to do 1:1 there's always a risk of lying particles not dissolving. It's always a good idea to do 1:1.15, that little bit extra water ensures all the lye is fully dissolved. You can add the extra dissolved lye required to the batter when adding primary lye water. Should be fine

    Interesting. Makes me think this could combat all the hype I'm hearing. I saw a few other videos warning people NOT to use shredded bar soap for laundry, because it leaves oil build ups in your clothes and washing machine that won't rinse out, thus the clothes and machine are not truly clean and the build up can ruin them long term (especially with hard water). Sounds like citric acid could help solve the problem? 🙂

There are plenty of people who grind them up with washing soda. Elly from Ellys everyday soap making has a tutorial on it actually, She has been using it for years without issues. Sodium lactate is "A SALT", it is totally un-realted to the "salt" that most people are familiar with. A "salt" is a class of chemicals, like acids, bases, alcohols, etc. Sodium lactate is "a salt" of lactic acid, a derivative of it. I hear people say things like sodium lactate is "made from salt" and that' couldn't be more incorrect. It's not related to table or sea salt. I think using the word "salt" is kind of a way to keep people from freaking out about adding a chemical to "natural" soap!
