  • Adding citric acid to your Dish or Laundry soap will help reduce soap scum in hard water, and can even help reduce chances for DOS (Dreaded Orange Spots).
    The reaction between Citric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide produces Sodium Citrate that acts as a Chelator by binding to the minerals and metals in your water and in the process improves the effectiveness of your soap. This is a lovely zero waste, vegan soap that produces a lot of bubbles with a high cleansing value. It can be used as a dish or laundry soap.
    00:00 Intro
    01:20 Why we use Citric Acid
    02:25 How Much Citric Acid

    Citric Acid in soap.
    You can use 1% to 3% (in relation to your oil weight) of Citric Acid in your soap recipe
    10grams of Citric Acid will neutralize about 6,24 grams of NaOH or 8,42 grams of KOH
    Dissolve the Citric Acid in your water before adding lye,
    WARNING because of the acidity the solution can bubble up when the lye is added. Make sure you use a large container with plenty of head-space to mix in, alternatively you can place your lye container in another container or work in the zink.
    The recipe used in the video (1000grams of Dish Soap with a 0,5% Superfat)
    634grams Coconut oil (100%)
    231grams Water
    115grams NaOH + 4gram NaOH to adjust for the Portion of lye neutralized by the CA
    12 grams Citric Acid ( 1% of the Oil weight)

    Just a correction, at 4:11 I state that I used 100g of oil, I have no Idea where I have pulled that out. The correct measurements is in the description box. 1000 grams of soap, 634grams of oils used, 1% Citric acid. Apologies for that Dyslextic blunder. 🌼

    Australian soaper here 😊. I’m so happy you “appeared” on my you tube ! So glad you did as I was watching a lot of American soapers and everything is in ounces!! 🤣
    I also watch Sunbird from South Africa, I like her too. You are very easy to listen to and visually I love it too. Your content is great and very interesting and even though I’ve been soaping for 4 years, I’m learning something from every one of your videos !
    Tallow is my all time fav ingredient and I still render my own sometimes, your way, in water , but mostly I buy my tallow in the supermarket now, in 500 gr blocks. I’ve just started using rice bran oil as a % as it’s soooo cheap here and that combo makes a very hard , long lasting bar! What we all want isn’t it!
    Anyway, I just wanted to say Hello 👋 from Queensland and please keep making your fantastic videos 😊

      Welcome Jo the Australian soaper 😃. Thank you for your lovely message and encouragement to make more videos, I need that, I've been absent from youtube for quite a while now. I need to pull myself together and do something about that 😄.
      Be blessed.

      Oh yes PLEASE pick up where you left off and continue to make these lovely videos. I’m half Dutch and so enjoy your language when you say things like Och ..and other words ha ha.
      You are very easy to listen to and well researched too, instead of making claims without the research.
      Keep doing what you are doing 🤣🤣

      Thank you so much. People like you are the motivation I need to get going again. My recording equipment was stolen 3 months ago and appart from having to generate the finances to replace it, the motivation to start again eluded me. Watch this space I should be recording again in two weeks if all goes to plan.

    Hi, can you help me?
    I want to make my own soap with citric acid. I want to use fresh lime juice as the citric acid and beef tallow .I have lye. But is it possible to use washing soda?
    I do not want to use citric acid power because it comes from black mold and I have a reaction to this ingredient.

    • @saponify6677
      @saponify6677  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You can use lime juice instead of citric acid, but I would advise that you first make a batch of soap without it. You unfortunately can't use washing soda in the place of lye, you need the lye to saponify the fatty acids in the oil. th-cam.com/video/fhTYAtn4OPI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gRtVERLkZ8eiab8x

      Karin, I'll have to watch the video when with an eagle eye, I might very well have had a slip of the tongue with the two sounding so much alike. All should be Citric acid with no stearic acid at all in this recipe. Thank you for contacting me and pointing it out, you are a gem 💎

    Is there any reason why not to use sodium citrate in soap instead of citric acid? That way you don’t have the extra measurements?

    • @saponify6677
      @saponify6677  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can definitely just use sodium Citrate without adjustments, Citric acid is just very easy to obtain from any grocer whereas Sodium Citrate is a speciality chemical only available from a few suppliers.

    Hello lovely... would adding steric acid help give a higher foam quality to the bar?

    • @saponify6677
      @saponify6677  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. Stearic acid and Citric acid are two different ingredients, Citric acid works as a chelator that binds to the minerals in hard water to "allow" the soap to perform better.
      Stearic acid as a fatty acid in fats like Tallow, Shea butter, and soy wax, Stearic acid content is awesome for shaving soap because it produces a dense stable foam (think shaving cream).
      Hope that answers your question 😃🌿

      @@saponify6677hi can you put citric acid, stearic acid and sodium lactate in one soap recipe and in what order? Citric acid to be added in distilled water before adding lye, stearic acid to be added after lye water after mixed. Sodium lactate also into lye water also am I correct

    • @saponify6677
      @saponify6677  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looks much darker on camera and I still struggle with my colour balance so ita a bit misleading, it does go darker but lightens up again after it sets. It also reacts differently with different brands of oil, the "discolouration" is apparently correlated to the amount of antioxidants in the coconut oil, the more antioxidants the darker the reaction apparently, but there is not much information available on it (not that I could find) so rather take this information as a possibility than a fact because I found the info on CBD oil forums.

      The Afrikaans accent is a pain I know :) Thank you for supporting my channel still I appreciate it. I'm not sure if ounces will be the same, I know to calculate the oil needed for a specific volume mold needs to be converted from fluid ounces to weight ounces. You can always just use the soapmakingfriend calculator and choose the imperial measurements and let the calculator do the work for you.
