Do you really want to try this at home? OK! Here is the translated recipe, converted from the original which you can always find at the end of the video ^_^. Thank you for watching! "To make a rich Seed-Cake called the Nun's Cake" - The Art of Cookery, 1805 2 cups flour 3/4 cup sugar 3 whole eggs + 2 yolks A little over 1 cup of softened butter (1 & 1/8 cup) 2 tablespoons of caraway seeds 1 tablespoon of cinnamon OR 1 tsp of cinnamon extract (extract is what the original recipe calls for) A dash of rose water, to taste In a mixing bowl combine your flour, sugar, cinnamon and caraway seeds. Separately whisk your whole eggs & egg yolks then strain through a fine mesh strainer (random fact - mesh strainers in this time were made with horse hair!). In another bowl now mash the butter with your hands till it is soft and has the appearance of cream. Into this add your strained eggs and blend well with rose water. Pour half of your wet ingredients into your flour mixture and work well before adding in the remaining half. If using your hands or a spoon blend for 2 HOURS. If using an electric mixture mix for half an hour on a medium speed. If your batter seems to be dry add more rose water or milk to moisten. Pour into a well buttered mold and bake at 300 degrees for 2-3 hours depending on the size of the mold. Once the top has cracked and a toothpick comes out clean it is done. *Now, sometimes flour in the early 1800s had a higher moisture content than today's flour. Because of that this recipet calls for you to dry it before a fire. This is not required when using modern processed flour. *The original receipt asks you to mix it for 2 hours with your hands, not a spoon. Isn't that just lovely?
Justine, where do you buy your silver dinner plates from? Can you please share info? I see them in your videos and I love them! I've been looking for some for the longest time.
I had a nun named Sister Anastasia-she could beat that cake batter single-handedly while simultaneously instructing Physical Ed and running track with us blowing a whistle.
My grandmother said as the eldest of 11 kids it fell to her to bake the family bread every day. “ I’d make bread till my arms fell off and the buggers would eat it all and I’d have to begin again “
My mother (b. 1923, d. 2016) was the eldest child and had to bake biscuits every morning. This was in the South, and they took biscuits to school. Her recipe was made from scratch. She would tear open a brown paper bag, flour it, and use the inside surface to roll out the dough. Then she dipped the rim of a drinking glass in flour and used it to cut out the biscuits. I only tried to make them myself once and they came out flat and hard! I guess I handled the dough too much, or something! 😊
Bake a cake was really difficult before the invention of baking powder in the mid 1800s. They had to make yeast as well. Baking was a real pain in the butt. Took several hours.😢
I've been watching this channel for a while now and I've seen Justine do some incredible things. But this is the first time I've ever seen her pitch a fit! Thank you, Mish-Mish for being a wonderful emotional support kitty.
Justine, your reaction to reading that you would have to beat the cake mix for 2 hours was the comedy and levity I needed today. What a priceless reaction. 😆😅😂
There’s a reason I cook in this century-I NEED MY KITCHENAID! 😂😂😂 I love your videos and admire you!!! This was hysterical!! I used to have chickens and miss them.
Totally loved the temper tantrums!!! Loved the vocals, have missed them. Should add them always. Had me doubled up laughing! And I keep thinking mixer is getting slower. LOL. Thank you for the receipt but, NO thank you!
The way the rooster crowed as you were stuffing the batter into the bottom of the chicken mold and again when you put it in the oven was absolute gold! Your restraint from swearing amazes me, there would have been a few more words added to those exclamations if it were me making this😅
I LOVE that cake mould! So clever. You are far more dedicated to the authentic experience than I ever would be! You get the gold star in Patience this week!⭐👏
This comedy gold moment of mixing for two hours and you being devastated by it completely made my night. Honestly i've not been doing well emotionally the past few days and watching this i laugh like i haven't done in a while, thank you.
It’s not a misprint. Out of curiosity, I googled nuns cake and this was was before baking powder was invented. Beating the cake for two hours was to incorporate air into the batter. This was similar to what pound cake is today.
The joy this video brings to my kids! They have rewatched it a dozen times and quote you all day. “Two hours!!?” “I DID ITTT!” Thank you for this hilarious video.

Beating the cake for two hours is to whip air into the batter. The recipes has no leavening agents so the batter would not rise, so it would be very dense with no crumble if you didn't leaven it by beating air into it.
Thanks for teaching us about straining eggs and what it does. I had never heard of that. Me and my girls were just cracking up at you stirring at the hearth. Sorry to laugh at your pain. The outcome was beautiful. Love that chicken cake mold! ❤️❤️
My husband & I just came upon your videos a few months ago, we are older and are slow into finding these videos. In fact, this past Christmas, my husband gave me a gift from “Justine”…It was two cook books and a bottle of anchovy sauce & mushroom ketchup!! Love you both and keep the videos coming..

WOW! This video was both hilarious and very IMPRESSIVE! Good work Justine! You persevered! I would have cheated and used either a leavening agent or an electric mixer!

😂
I think I'd have tossed the book in the fire!
A Nun's Cake.....because after beating it for two hours, you'll want none of it!
That makes heck of a lot of sense...well that and the fact the cake will truly be a nun, untouched.
😂🤭@@misachitachibana7214
That’s awesome lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don't worry I later went out and apologized to the tree.

Stirring for two hours!!!
The nuns must have all lined up in the kitchen and took turns passing the bowl and spoon. 😂🎉 yay, you did it!! 💪

This video was okay. It would have been better if it was 2 hours.

Omg!!! It's so funny!!! Perhaps it's called a nuns cake because it took all the nuns in the nunnery to beat it!!!😂😂
Crazy! I would be like, nah. 😂 Your kitty is beautiful!
Or, if you didn't do it right, you got "nun". 😊
Or, if you make it too often, you'll end up as an old spinster (too exhausted to care about finding a husband)
I think that too.
