  • Awards season is normally the time when Hollywood becomes its most insufferable, opinionated and self-important. And yet this year was surprisingly... normal. No big shocks, no political posturing, no tokenised award winners. Has Hollywood finally learned its lesson? Let's find out.

      Did anyone enjoy the purple CGI vomit that was Quantumania? They spend a lot of money on something that looks straight up awful. Is no one involved paying attention to the crap they are making while it's in production?

      AKSHUALLY this was the first Godzilla film wher he was completely CGI (While Shin's was also purely CGI, they had built rubber suits and filmed footage for Godzilla that ultimately weren't used. Minus One's was intended to be CGI from the beginning). Which makes that accomplishment both more fascinating and also shows how much bloat are in Hollywood productions.

    • @KetsubanSolo
      @KetsubanSolo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jimdaniels7531 As I mentioned in another response, there's a lot of bloat in Hollywood filmmaking. A big one is actor salaries being sky high (Daisy Ridley is basically getting paid Minus One's entire budget just to reprise her role as Rey), overreliance on CGI (good CGI requires lots of time and money and the average person doesn't notice when it's used, while lots of the bad stuff is when they run out of money and the film is coming out in two weeks), and lots of other waste (I was at a film festival lately, and an actor who worked in both Hong Kong and American productions was doing a Q&A, and noted that Hollywood will spend way too much on stuff like trailers and catering, which are nice for him but do nothing for the finished film).
      Meanwhile you see stuff like Wes Anderson films where everyone is paid the minimum SAG-AFTRA wages (even Scarlett Johansson), they do their own makeup/wardrobe, and Wes personally drives them to the set. They're done very cheaply but the visuals are IMMACULATE and everyone involved loves doing those films.
      What I'm saying is, support indie films and filmmakers, ditch Hollywood.

      @whoami7721 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's been a few years since I've watched the Oscars all the way through. I had a friend that would hold Oscar parties every year. We'd have a game where whoever picked the most winners for the night won a pot of money, which was only a few dollars, but it was something. Year after year, I noticed there were less interesting movies in the Best Picture field, especially after the whole "Dark Knight" debacle in 2009, , where it wasn't even nominated. The movies just seem to get dumber every year, or are so obscure or artsy that you have to go out of your way to watch them. I mean, I love much of Martin Scorsese's work, but "Killers of the Flower Moon is almost three-and-a-half hours long. That's an entire afternoon, and a half-hour longer than "Oppenheimer".
      So, this year, I watched just the clips of the acceptance speeches. The only movies I saw this year were "Oppenheimer" and "Poor Things". I have to admit, "Oppenheimer" deserves all the credit it's due and then some. It is a work of art, but it's also accessible. It's not exclusively a film for film snobs, as most Oscar nominated films are nowadays.

      @@yasminea7149 I don’t think that they’ll ever be able to eliminate the male gaze completely. It’s human nature for men to be attracted to women. That’s what keeps the earth populated. It seems like some in Hollywood are trying to change societal perceptions, though.
      Personally, I wouldn’t care if Hollywood created new franchises and projects that promoted their values; however, they don’t seem to do that. It appears that, instead, they take established franchises and try to either change or destroy them.
      That’s what bothers me. Both can exist side-by-side but it appears that they don’t want to allow that.

      It's the only Studio Ghibli movie I've fallen asleep in. Now, I was two weeks post discharge from two tier spinal surgery and whacked out on pain meds, but it should've kept my interest. Ha! Glad it won an Oscar though. Most movies from the studio deserve huge praise. Hollywood is SLOOOOOOOOOOW to change anything. Regardless of their posturing. 'Poor Things' received the recognition it deserved. Emma Stone was brilliant in her role as Bella and a well deserving best actress winner. 'Oppenheimer' got its due reward and was the most outstanding movie of the year. 'Barbie' was a fake narrative tale where "being as bad as those who have 'bullied' you is the right thing to do". Hollywood! Am I right?

      Supposedly up 4% from last year. Which continues a trend of growth since 2021. However, because 2021 was such a disaster, even being the 3rd consecutive year of growth still makes it the 4th least watched Oscars (in front of only 2021, 2022, and 2023). The thing is that to get that 4%, everything had to go right: moving the ceremony an hour easier, actually nominating some movies people have heard of, and, miraculously, not making it about politics despite it being an election year.

    Oppenheimer wasn't political? It was supposed to be a story about the development of the most terrifying weapon of all time. With Chornobyl, we know this story CAN and SHOULD be interesting. Instead, it was a convoluted mess of too many characters saying too many things that had nothing to do with the bomb or the development of it, or even the implications of it. Instead, the second half of the 3-hour movie focuses on an anti-America message about how America was "mean" for trying to ensure this weapon didn't fall into enemy hands (the communist party). I found it convoluted and hated it right away. My lady thought the same thing. Months later people are admitting to us they didn't like it for the same reasons, convoluted and too focused on America's anti-communism (which was entirely justified, especially at the time). Emperors new clothes... I said it the day it came out to rave reviews.
    They didn't even show the demon core, one of the most interesting aspects of the Manhattan project or any other radiation issues like Chernobyl did to great effect. Just watched Chernobyl and skip this horrible movie.

    • @windowsVD
      @windowsVD 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Wow, it's like you didn't understand the film at all. Almost the ENTIRE movie WAS about the implications of the bomb. The second half had nothing to do with America trying to ensure that the weapon didn't fall into enemy hands, that wasn't a major plot point at all. It was about how the board used McCarthyist Era policies as a SMOKESCREEN to discredit Oppenheimer because his own feelings about the bomb became in direct conflict with their interests. The film is titled OPPENHEIMER, not the Manhattan Project. It's about the man who built the bomb, who became afraid of what his creation would be used for, and was forced out of the Atomic Energy Commission using McCarthyist era policy for trying to stall the development of this technology, which to Oppenheimer only proved his fears about the bomb RIGHT. The movie isn't pro or anti-communist, the culmination of the film is about the journey of how Oppenheimer came to view himself and his own creation as, "death, the destroyer of worlds."
      Look, I hate the woke mob as much as everyone, but some of you guys are trying too hard to be contrarian here.

That doesn't mean we're in love with the only other choice we seem to have, but please don't assume that just because we're in your camp on opposing "THE MESSAGE" (insert reverb effect here), that everyone who does must support Trump. Not all of us do, despite despising woke nonsense and how just about every one of our beloved IP's has been utterly defiled and ruined by the woke agenda. If there is to be a champion for us to rally behind, many of us would prefer it NOT be someone who clearly doesn't respect our mothers, sisters and daughters. We would prefer someone who does not fit the textbook definition of sociopath, narcissist and/or liar. We would prefer someone who meets their business commitments, keeps his word and does not drive small companies out of business just because they trusted him and he doesn't want to pay his bills. And most important of all, we would prefer someone who does not utilize misinformation and hate mongering to garner political support. Not to mention the whole insurrection thing on January 06, 2021. I for one will respectfully refuse any call to rally behind Donald Trump ever again. So yes, orange man bad. When you say it with sarcasm you're implying I should not think he is. Well, I do, and nothing will change my mind about that. But before anyone reading this, including you, attacks me for taking this stand, remember I agree with just about everything else. Hollywood has forgotten they are just glorified combination of storytelling, performance and circus, you know, vagabonds traveling from village to village, telling stories, dancing and singing in exchange for a meal. Now they're just humbled, on the outside.

    Godzilla Minus One wasn't nominated for Best International Film because it wasn't eligible. The way that category works is that each country submits one film and the Oscars choose from those submissions. Japan's was Perfect Days, which, funnily enough, was directed by a famous German director. I don't think Japan was expecting Godzilla to be as popular as it was overseas. If they were, they probably would've submitted it.

    • @Okinawatrip
      @Okinawatrip 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Japanese people have no idea whatsoever of what foreigners like or find interesting in Japanese culture or places apart from very broad strokes. Perfect Days is a good film, set in Japan, but not a Japanese film at all. They don't make movies with the idea of pleasing foreign audiences so of course they had no idea that Godzilla would work. And I believe it's part humility (we can't rival Hollywood) and part arrogance (it's very Japanese, foreigners can't get it).

      Yea I feel Japan views Godzilla like we currently view superhero films. Like Godzilla has had 38 films and never got an Oscar nomination

      @goremando2238 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Godzilla fans in Japan have been feastin' for awhile. Between Shin Godzilla, 3 animated movies, and Minus One the last 8 years have been good to fans. But the Legendary Pictures abominations have been kind of tainting the Godzilla brand in the west trying to make their monster version of an MCU. The Toho Godzilla films always have a strong theme to them being anti-war, anti-nuclear(minus one) or drawing from recent events like Fukushima disaster(Shin). But the Hollywood Godzilla's are very different. No message or major themes, nothing culturally significant. Just dumb smashemup movies made to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

      @@goremando2238 The American version of the original Gojira is equal parts funny and extremely stupid. It strips everything significant about that film and, like you said, turns it into a dumb smashemup movie. I had to watch the two films back to back for a film class in college and it was crazy seeing how they just planted an American main character into the already shot footage of Gojira then changed what all the Japanese characters were saying.
