- Another day, another Star Wars controversy. This time its Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy the director of the new Star Wars movie about nobody's favourite character Rey, declaring its about time women were allowed to tell the story of Star Wars. Needless to say, it didn't go down well.
I am Italian and an Italian never directed a star wars movie. It's 2024 and I think it's about time an Italian directs a Star Wars movie.

We all suspect where this is going and I doubt they'll prove us wrong.
I bet dollars to donuts she knows literally NOTHING about Star Wars, the Star Wars universe, the sci-fi or space opera genres, any context of why the films were successful in the first place, or anything else that would qualify her to be the director of a feature length SW movie.

And Disney threw Kathy Tyers' _The Truce at Bakura_ under a kriffing bus!
As a woman I can't even talk about new star wars without getting angry more angry than my husband. He hates bringing up the topic because I get heated, I start yelling. I love star wars, grew up on stars wars. My daddy took me to see star wars as a very little girl barely old enough to enjoy a non Disney movie because he knew I would love it. I grew up with bad ass space princess Leia as my hero. This crap they have done with star wars just makes me well angry. its insulting to men and women as well as just bad story telling. Star wars was for everyone it was big, epic and made a little girl like me dream of flying a spaceship and fighting with swords. I never felt like I wasn't part of star wars or that star wars wasn't for me as a girl because I knew it was for me, Its for everyone. saying star wars needs a woman director or writer for me to enjoy it is just insulting. The director or writer needs to be passionate about the topic no matter what they identify as, that doesn't matter and it shouldn't matter especially for a film about a galaxy far far away.

Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

"It's about time a woman directed a Star Wars film" My sister in Christ you RAN the company! So stunning and brave of Kathleen Kennedy who has been in charge for over a decade to finally allow a woman to direct a film right when excitement for the IP is at an all time low. Then when the movie fails they can blame the misogynistic fans (who I guess are most of the moviegoing public?)
There are no fans of disney's star wars.
She said "shape" not direct -- which is an even worse oversight on her behalf as the role Marcia Lucas played in shaping Star Wars was fundamental right from the start...
Each Disney flop feels like another adaptation of "The Producers." They had a scam where they collected investor money based upon promises of payouts based on the film's success. Then they intentionally got a pro-hitler (Springtime for Hitler in Germany song) Director, with the intention of producing a flop. But unlike that film, these films are not a success.
So who keeps throwing billions in investments for these flops?
But Rian directed one already and he's a huge vagina...
Star Wars is a guy flick. Naturally guys won't like it if it is changed into a feminist flick. So they made movies for feminists and now are surprised that non femonazzis don't like it. Wow.
Even if Sharmeen does fine and doesn't go nuts, a Rey movie will go down like The Marvels.
With her mindset it's impossible to make a decent movie.
It's a stinker of the idea in the first place and dear old Sharmeen is just a crappy cherry on top of it
@@susivarga7303 Yes, people always, ALWAYS say that "In theory no, not every one of these movies that HAS to feature a woman replacing a male character, or directing, or writing, or producing, etc is going to be bad" yes, yes it is. They all fit a specific mold. This movie's going to have at least one scene where the female characters lambast the male characters or just outright demean, emasculate, overpower, outperform, and/or make fools of them, on the basis of nothing other than 'because we are female and you are men'. They do it every single time, without fail, and people will just say "I-it wasn't THAT bad" because they don't want to anger the twitter mob.
The fact that people see these scenes now and just expect them and accept them and say "Well aside from the (woke crap) this tv show/movie wasn't TOO bad" as opposed to rightfully criticizing them ten years ago, is not a sign that these movies are getting better. It's a sign that the tired and desperate Marvel and Disney fandoms are completely beaten down to the point where they'll accept anything as long as it's more content which means their favorite franchise isn't quite COMPLETELY dead yet... They need to just accept the loss and move on.
"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" - Abradolf Lincler
No, IMO this could make "The Marvels" look like Shakespear's greatest works.
the movie will be about Rey rebuilding the jedi academy. Luke was supposed to do it but hey the force is female lmao.
The restaurant analogy.
You purchase a popular, long running restaurant franchise with solid theme bult up over decades and a solid customer base who loving remember going there as children. The menu is based on tasty comfort food and big portions. As the new owner you have a dream to make people change their eating habits. You begin to add to the menu new items not in line with the old menu. They are healthy, small portion items that tick all the right buzz words. Vegan, sustainable, ethical, gluten free and low calorie. But are ultimately tasteless, unfulfilling and unmemorable. To promote the new menu items, you begin to diminish and remove old fan favourites. You begin to lose money and cop bad reviews. In addition, some of the real die-hard fans of the restaurant take to social media and really stick it to you. Rather than understanding your customer base you fight back, calling them toxic and double down on your new menu as well as hiring long standing activists and promoters of ethical food to manage your franchise. At this point the entirety of the fan base is looking on with disbelief and shear bewilderment at what you are serving up. Yes, the logo is there, the familiar music and decor. But the food has completely disconnected from what they remember. In disappointment they quietly leave. Eventually you go broke.
Great analogy 🙌
In the year 2024, there hasn't been a German involved in starring or directing a Star Wars film. Therefore, as a German myself, I insist that Uwe Boll directs the next Star Wars movie, and Christoph Waltz takes on the role of either Duke Eyestalker or Bark Fader. This is my firm demand!

I absolutely adore how Disney doesn’t listen to their audience ever, at all, never ever ever. Thanks Kath.
The solution is simple. Don't watch it. Unsub from hulu and disney+. Forget it exists and move on.
All their audience does is bitch so why would they listen to that?
Treasure troves of lore from Legends Old Republic era and the Old Republic MMORPG that would satisfy the old heads as well as tell a unique and new story about a different era of the Star Wars universe that would be interesting to a new audience. But nope thank god we get a boring character in Rey Skywalker!
Same exact reason House of the dragon is doing so well and an Age of Heros GOT show about the rise of the early Starks, Lannisters would do even better.
People want unique stories that give context to the main characters of the main trilogy.
@@paarker Agreed. Apparently the goal at Disney is to longer make money? 🤷🏻♂️
@@thegreatid3595 A resounding, YES!!
Like I said before.. there were thousands of hours of literature, graphic novels and video games that had built the lore of Star Wars before Disney took over and Disney didn’t just cast it into a ditch, they’ve tried to pave right over it and make everything we loved disappear. They don’t have any passion for it, only dollar signs in their eyes. Jon Favreau had passion with The Mandalorian at least, but Disney as a corporation is just in it for the money, and has sucked the life out of the franchise. It’s disgusting.
Not to mention that George Lucas actually had some ideas for the sequel, one of which involved Maul and Talon being the villains, and Disney completely scrapped them to make their own dumb trilogy.
wise words from the man himself - Bob Ross!
I get the sentiment but I believe the reality is a bit more complex than saying "Disney as a corporation is evil and greedy" I mean a corporation can't be greedy because a corporation isn't a conscious entity. But of course it consists of many people who are conscious. And sure there might be greedy people among them. But I'm also sure even those people are aware that the best way to make more money is to deliver a product their costumers will enjoy. And they probably each have their own ideas about what that would entail. But of course nobody knows upfront what will or won't be successful.
Each person is a cog in the machine and they all need to need to make sure the machine keeps running. So of course they need to make a lot of money. You don't want to be the one responsible for the decline of a multi billion dollar company with over 200.000 employees.
The problem is the same as always. Disney is run by humans. And humans are fallible and have (in a general sense) no idea what they are doing most of the time. But that is a problem we have in all layers of society, not just Hollywood.
So Disney = evil? Idk, I get the feeling they are just trying to survive, just like most of us.
@@Djoarhet001 So why do they keep making the same mistakes over and over. Being Human means learning from mistakes, not doing the same thing over and expecting a different outcome.

Im a major star wars fan and a girl. I have never felt so alienated by a fandom that keeps screaming it represents me. Padme, Ahsoka, Leia, Ventress, Luminara Unduli, etc. These characters meant so much to me growing up. They know they exist in a patriarchal world, yet these women overcome this obstacle through incredible hard work and sacrifice to become the amazing characters they are. In our world, like in star wars, misogyny and sexualisation exist (hello, Leia in a bikini as a major sex symbol). Pretending it doesnt exist OR screaming about it DOES NOT SPEAK TO YOUR FEMALE FANS. The characters I mentioned before are far more representative of women's struggles both in their galaxy and our own. Padmé even inspired me to get into politics. Rey earns her status through no hard work, no sacrifice, and her bloodline. These feminist executives spit in the face of feminism. It is literally embarrassing to be a star wars fan today.

@@brianbender6369 what are you saying exactly?
Something they don't consider too, just because you're a woman it doesn't mean you don't relate to men, just like me being black does not mean I feel represented by blacks only. I feel more represented by Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop the anime which is written by a Asian Japanese man and the character is a Jewish Bounty Hunter who does Martial Arts in outer space. Your gender or skin color is not the only thing that makes you, you and that's what these people are always boiling it down to. I'm 35, but growing up I did not care or ask for black representation.
There were always black characters around and I liked some and not others, but I didn't feel represented by black characters just because they were black. My favorite Super hero is the Flash. Some of my favorite characters are Blade, Static Shock, The flash, Gohan, Spike, Luke Skywalker, Vash, Kenshin Himura, L from Death note, Edward Full Metal Alchemist, Bit Cloud, Sly From Sly Cooper, if I made a list it would be huge and it would include some women too. Some are black, white, Asian, animal-humanoids, Aliens, Half Alien Human Hybrids, male female, robots, androids, it don't matter. And as far as living in a Patriarchal world....that's the default of reality and nobody really cared until recent human history and there's been instances of matriarchies in human history both good and bad that have committed atrocities too so it's not like it matters if the scene is patriarchal or matriarchal. So anyone pushing these ideals are wrong and foolish.

It’s not so much that the “making men uncomfortable” clip was taken out of context, it’s that her entire worldview clearly revolves around that very same sentiment.
Yep. People are missing the forest for a tree.
I agree- that clip has the surrounding context to explain or even justify it. I think the other interview where she directly states that she puts her activism into everything she makes is more relevant to the criticism of choosing her for this position. Maybe she plans on inserting honor killings into wookiee society so she can explain to everyone that it's a bad thing to do.
Yes, perhaps in that extreme scenario in Pakistan, she needed that belief, but she's not going to switch gears when she's in the western world. Frankly, very few people can do that as it is.

Drinker specifically said that this quote should be understood in *context*
Seriously
The greatest irony of the whole push of identity politics, I’d argue, is that it feels like it has created more intolerance than the time before it being pushed. Late 90’s to early 00’s you had a great rise of shows, movies and games having more diversity, celebrities of all types were popular as hell, even before that you had notable comedy tv shows with almost entirely black casts that were massively popular. You could genuinely argue we were becoming more progressive in general, sure you still had intolerance but that’s never going away entirely but it was quieter. But once tolerance became mandated and diversity and inclusivity started to be pushed deep, down our collective throats and suddenly everyone who thought the wrong things became the villains. It began to create resentment within many people that previously found themselves quite accepting.
True. I only search for vanilla now.....barr my Thai wife.
Simply said, the more somebody fronts an idea, the more they lack it. In a culture of perfection, people try to cover their faults by loud mouthing the opposite.
Because diversity and inclusion is the current secular religion, reason says it’s because that’s what they are bad at.
How many universities now have segregation again? Funny how many districts in cities are also being more and more segregated. Notice how the ones pushing for segregation now are the same groups that pushed in back in the day (Often the same people who have been in power that long), just reframing it as good for blacks rather than good for whites.
Funny how they've managed to delude people into voting for the ones keeping them in chains (less literal now, but the Constitution has that neat little loophole that allows slavery in the one instance that certain group has worked tirelessly to make as many black people a part of as possible) and pushing segregation and racism at every turn while pretending like they are the good guys.
Funny that.
If you leave people alone, most of them will be very tolerant and willing to be inclusive to everyone. But when you get in their faces and tell them they’re the bad guys for not agreeing with you, they will disagree on sheer principle. And they will be less tolerant because they see it as abetting the people they don’t like.
I used to not have a problem with this stuff. I was very much in the ‘you don’t bother me, I don’t bother you’ camp. But now that inclusivity is being shoved down our throats constantly, I get so tired of it and want it all to leave me alone.

They lack the humility to avoid shooting their shot too early or walking into something doomed to fail.
They unfortunately seem to land in a pile of money, no matter how badly they fail. That's what most "activism" is generally about - acting like you care about something, with the real goal of getting rich doing it.

Yet, we all know that what we will get will probably be garbage despite what they have to work with.
I have NEVER seen Ownership, Directors, Producers, and Writers so drastically out of touch with its fan base. They are not speaking the same language, or even playing the same sport. Fans want Jedi & Sith compelling stories, Disney gives us "Great Value" Thelma and Louise

Thank you Drinker for clarifying her "make men uncomfortable" comment. I didn't know that about her and it's important to be fair.
The ironic thing is, before the disaster that was WW 84, Patty Jenkins made a short trailer for her Rogue Squadron movie, where she talked about how her dad was an Air Force Pilot, and she sounded really passionate about the movie, and guess what? I was excited for it! But it got scrapped (though honestly I think she could do a good job as long as we got a competent scriptwriter attached to it and just had Patty handle direction), and yet now they act like this was never even considered.
But the biggest issue I have is that, while yes the "Make Men Uncomfortable" quote is referring to her documentary work, I have this bad feeling that this mentality will permeate her work on Star Wars. She even said that she enjoys it, like it's a power trip for her. I can't help but contrast her to a number of successful Japanese Female Mangakas that have created best selling and widely enjoyed manga and anime for boys and men, and never once did they ever try to make their customer base uncomfortable, even though Japan does have gender inequality issues. Their main goal was to entertain and make great male AND female heroes, working together, and being great examples for everyone. This the main reason I am always excited for the new anime seasons and dread whatever Disney spits out: Japan wants to entertain; Disney wants to make you uncomfortable.
Well said!
Glad you mentioned Rogue Squadron.
It is ironic that industries outside of Hollywood understand their customer base for what they are, people who want a good story and good entertainment, unlike Hollywood, which attaches labels and criticizes toxic fans to blame for their mishaps rather than fixing the inherent issues with their works. Disney is looking at fans not as fans, but as cattle to be reeducated so that they can spread their messages without fear of backlash or loss in revenue for their toys. Stripping them of their agency of thought, now that they have a dedicated consumer base.

I don’t even understand why it’s so important for women to run Star Wars. Everyone knows the Star Wars fanbase has always been about 90% male. Do they really think that having female’s in front of and behind the cameras is going to get millions of women into sci-fi? Most women are never going to care about it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard women talking with each other about any sci-fi. They’ll sit and watch it with their bfs and husbands but that’s about it. Ideological possession ignores reason
My guess is that they're making the bulk of Star Wars profits off of things like toys and other products or services like amusement parks and streaming, to the point where the quality of the actual primary media like movies and TV doesn't matter as much as just keeping the IP in the public eye and drawing attention to it, good or bad. A few chances??? No, no chances left. Disney has lost me entirely with Star Wars ALONE. Not to mention Indiana Jones, Willow, and everything else destroyed by KK by herself.
@@carldzoga1348very polite way of saying "she is boring".
Nah she has literally zero chance of recovery - she is a trainwreck beyond reckovery.
But she’s still the head of Lucasfilm?
The woman is 70 years old, she is past retirement age. Her reputation among Star Wars fans is bad, but her reputation among Hollywood is being a woman who makes “the man babies” angry.
It doesn’t really matter much.
Fantastic video, Drinker. I grew up in the eighties and nineties. It wasn't perfect by any means, but we had got to a point where the vast majority of people really didn't care about sex, race or sexuality. It was about what you were like as a person. This applied to how you conducted yourself, your successes - and your failures. And if you did mess up it was on you. No excuses. Nobody with any self-respect back then would ever have played the sex or race card. And you would certainly be thought less of by your peers if you did.
Like most sane people I'm sick of the identity politics and the relentless demonisation of men and white people. Not only is it grossly unfair, it is also dangerous and (as James Lindsay recently noted) plays with the sort of language that leads to genocide. The sooner we get back to meritocracy and individual responsibility the better for everyone.
As a kid of the '80s, I concur. 😃👍🏾
As someone who wasn't born in the 80s or 90s, I cant help but disagree. I mean, a lot of those MAGA people were also growing up in the 80s and 90s too.
@@kostakatsoulis2922 MAGA people didn't care about race, sex or sexuality. The movement had personalities like Milo, Kaitlyn Jenner, Lauren Southern, Ben Carson, Silk Twins and Candace Owens at the top FFS and was comically diverse
@@kostakatsoulis2922FFS What does your former Presidents followers have anything to do with the OPs comment? I agree with the OP, with everything they said. Television was very much diverse, and no one cared who was in your bed sheets with you. The activists of the TQA mafia weren’t even born yet. In the 80s and 90s television was filled with diversity, representation with many diverse casts. No movie or television series was filled with The Message, like it is now. I’ll be honest with you, I’d be happy if Networks had control over what the writers could or could not show. You can blame it all on the MAGA wackos all you want. But you sound like you like The Message being shoved in your face. It’s about time that series go back to good writing, quiet messaging, and diverse casts that weren’t shoved in due to bloody mandates.
based upon my parents upbringing i could 100 second everything said here, wild that it went from that to woke culture, but thats what u get from a generation like this
The issue is that any time we as fans complain, they just label us as sexists.
In reality, we don’t care whether the protagonist is male or female. We want good storytelling, a hero’s journey, and character development. There is NONE of this with Rey.
Your digression adds valuable nuance, thanks for that :)
