2013 Lexus ES vs GS 0-60 MPH Mashup Review: What's the best new Lexus sedan?

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) Here's an interesting question. What is the best new Lexus Sedan? Is it the 2013 Lexus ES300h or is it the 2013 Lexus AWD GS350? The new Lexus ES300h is of course a large 200 horsepower hybrid 4-door Lexus sedan that gets an amazing 40 MPG combined. While the new 2013 Lexus AWD GS350 is also a large 4-door Lexus sedan but with All-wheel-drive and of course a very powerful 3.5L V6 that puts out 306 HP. In another fun and exclusive TFLcar Mashup review we try to find out which of these very similar Lexus sedan's is the better car. It is a matchup of power versus fuel economy or perhaps another way to look at it might be brown versus technology.

@@Sir_BoazMutatayi I had a 2017 IS200t F-Sport for a couple of years & now a 2016 GS350 F-Sport that I just bought last year. While my IS was a fun car, I personally like the GS a lot more. It's a class above so it has a lot more features as well as a higher quality cabin a smoother ride, a lot more interior room especially in the back seat & even better handling. It's easily the best car I've owned so far.

You guys are your own thing, and it's great. You give real-world analysis of how these cars are, and don't do the typical automotive journalist thing I can't stand, which is to review EVERY vehicle, whether a crossover or SUV or minivan, with regard to how it should perform on a race track. You understand what people want to hear about a given vehicle type, and you always hit the important stuff. Plus, the real-world 0-60 is the most helpful and realistic performance metric I've ever seen!

I drove the older IS-F and the convertible. Both vehicles are better handlers, but they were vastly inferior to the GS for overall ride and competence. The new IS is supposed to be updated, but overall feel is something of a mystery to us. I think, like the last model, the IS will compete with the BMW 3-Series whereas the GS competes with the BMW 5-Series. We'll post the IS video the moment we get our hands on one.

I wanted to add that one concern that haunts me every time I find myself considering the ES... that tap, tap, tap “plasticy” center console with all of those nice details above and around it. Do you feel me on this? This hurts a bit, but it looks and feels cheap to me . I have trouble picturing the designers/engineers going "this is a great idea, let's skip the leather." Looking forward to the 2014 IS-F review.

Justin, thanks for the info. For the GS hybrid, its only downfall is the lack of an AWD option. I think Lexus is saying if you want a hybrid AWD vehicle, get a RX 450h, their top-selling crossover. Lexus also has wonderful interiors as well. Nope, did not contradict myself of misspeak at all. If you want rear heated seats you have to buy a GS because it is not available on the ES. Multi-zoned heating and cooling is a gimmick, it does not really work. The point is the ES satisfied 99% of most people's needs and they should offer rear heated seats. Charge $500 for it, people will pay it. The GS offers some amazing multi-contour seats, but I don't think that is worth $10K plus.

The comparison should be between the Camry hybrid and ES hybrid

That steering wheel at 3:07 looks incredibly warped when Nathan turns it.

ES is always the cheapest option while still driving a Lexus level vehicle, GS on the other hand is a step higher from performance and horsepower

Great video! Slowly loving the Lexus, I ordered an IS300h due January 2019.
Would it not have been better to compare the ES300h vs the GS300h or GS450h at a push?

Alex, Roman gets hundreds of questions each day. All he's trying to do is point to where query is addressed. We work our asses off to accommodate viewer's questions and comments. I disagree with you about his response, he's just trying to be pragmatic.

Nathan is wrong. A proper transmission is a manual transmission. Since you can't get on on either Lexus... nor the 535xi (which I rather have over the GS)... I would have to lean to the ES300h.... and take the leftover $13k and spend it on a used Subie for winter.

E63 and e55 vs gs350 - similar gasoline consumption but how can you compare 510 and 465 vs 306 hp?

Would be closer with ES350 and its detuned engine

In fact, I have watched the whole 18 minute video and nowhere in this sequence do you mention the letter IS. Now, I am not only talking about the new, but as the other gentleman said the OLD IS, since you have driven it in the past. The only thing we can see in this video that mentions the letter IS is a link to a video from the car show. Now if you could only give your personal opinion on how the old IS measures against these two good looking cars and how you might anticipate the new IS to be.

They say the ES is nearly as luxurious, but the GS's interior is actually far superior (aesthetically and functionally). GS also looks nicer on the inside, but as said before, there is more space in the ES.

Terrible editing. Why do you cut in scenes in the middle of the host talking and pause his speech.

Because you're not the producer it's bad editing? Maybe that was the whole point, lol focus on cars. This isn't editing tutorial, and no need to put anyone on blast for their work, there's a reason you're not working for them lol

Qwerty Ytrewq WTF are you talking about? Your points make no sense. That scene that cuts off in the middle of the host's speech doesn't work. It has nothing to do with me not being the producer, the video not being an editing tutorial, or me working for a small youtube video operation.

Roman, why don't you load the engine like Nathan usually does when doing 0-60 tests?
