LOL! Brings new meaning to 'I could listen to him read the phone book!' What a great glimpse into an otherwise obscure corner of everyday life. Thanks for the tour down memory lane!
Bob Garren, Southeast Florist in Huntington Park was a florist to several A-list stars. His husband was the head of one of the major hospitals in Los Angeles. Rock was a regular guest at their huge Spanish home that was built in 1927 at 2405 Glendower, Los Feliz. 3 acres of jungle gardens and a custom-built bathhouse next to the pool. Dozens of gay porn films were made there. We would sit the house when Bob and the Dr. were out of town. I would sit and page through their personal photo albums amazed at all the gay celebrities that were their friends. Bobs other clients were Elizabeth Tayor and Peggy Lee and Dina Shore. Their estate is next door to the house that Michael Feinstein just sold for 7 million.
@Lasuvidaboy Thanks for the memory jog, I vaguely remember the name Peckerwood Estate, I think that was also the name of the plantation in the musical Mame and something has been telling me that the owners had at one time invested money in the stage or movie. I don't remember anything of the Rock Hudson furniture but I did have dinner at the Walt Disney dining room table and chairs one night. The gardens were so special especially the lower garage with the glass pyramid-shaped roof with the tiled fountain that spilled between the cars stalls. Truly a home you would expect to find Norma Desmond drinking champagne. I don't know if the same two guys still own it, I moved away and lost contact.
Thanks Scott. I remember Rolodex. After watching this I feel like getting one again. So much easier to list numbers and have them handy instead of loading up the cell phone! Loved the video . Wish you did them more often. I really look forward to hearing your stories. Thanks again take care and can’t wait for part two!
Agreed, a rolodex is SO much better for storing and retrieving contacts than a mere phone! You can't scribble little memory jogger notes about the person on your cellphone, like you can on rolodex cards! As a TV celebrity booker in London, my rolodex was my fortune - I took it with me to every freelance TV guest booking job I did, it was my personal treasure trove of contacts and worth its weight in gold!
I still use a nice small compact rolodex to this day as well as a hardcover address/internet password book with alphabetical tabs. In today's busy world it's not easy to keep one up especially if you have to get started typing/writing all of your contacts on the cards but once they're all neatly alphabetized then you're good to go. To keep things organized especially to do with receipts, letters, bills, filing, etc... I still do it manually typing/writing because with today's technology you never want to take the chance of losing it should your device stop working then there's no way to retrieve it. I always say "write it down". Every room in my house has at least one pen/pencil and post-it-note pad(s) in a drawer. The old way is the best way. Better safe than sorry.
