  • This walk is an east to west traverse of Liathach in Glen Torridon across the main summits of Spidean a' Choire Leith and Mullach an Rathain. The circular walk starts from the A896 road just east of Glen Cottage. Its all up from there... a cracking days weather, clear sky but a freezing east wind just to keep the nose running.

That's one of the finest things I've ever seen. When I did it, the weather was different in that it was during a heatwave and that produced a heat haze which blotted out the distant scenery but the worst was, although it could have been done in training shoes, there wasn't a drop of drinkable water anywhere to be had. The descent to the road though was interminable.

What a superb video (agree with w Joest, the best Liathach video I have seen) and what fantastic conditions. I did the pinnacles a couple of years ago in the rain so missed the stunning views. This June if the weather is good am planning to do a West to East Traverse of Liathach (but using the pinnacle bypass path this time like you guys did) followed by a traverse of Beinn Eighe in one very long day. To do this have been looking for a way down off the N. side of Liathach to avoid going all the way around to Beinn Eighe via the car park. I was thinking of using the scree slope which appears in your video at 5.32. Your video is the best view I have seen of this potential route and it now looks doable, though admittedly still very tough.

Charlie, your video took me back to when I lived at Glen Cottage in the early 70's. Liathach was out the back door and straight up to the summit. - a sobering experience after a good night at either the Torridon bar or a ceilidh at the Cottage. I can't remember the number of times I climbed the "Grey One", from the north, south and east. The traverse in winter could be quite challenging especially in bad weather when the only safe way down was the scree shoot above Torridon village. The hill should not me under-estimated as I was involved in a few rescues with people trying to descend at the wrong point or during the night.
I live in Australia now so a few more videos of the Torridon hills would be most appreciated

  • @Slademarkable

Another great video Charlie, a long time since I visited Torridon, went up Beinn Alligin, Liathach is a mountain and a half, would love to traverse the ridge but I don't have the head for heights I had in my twenties so the pinnacles put me off, your bypass route looks pretty exposed, I should imagine potentially dangerous in wet conditions?

I love all your films Charlie, they bring back so many memories, and are helping me during this house arrest/solitary confinement/ deprivation chamber experience. What lens do you use, I think you said it’s a Go-Pro, but do you know the focal length in 35mm equivalence?

Hi Duncan, Glad you enjoyed looking around our trips and hopefully we'll get a chance to add to the library once the restrictions are lifted. I use the GoPro Hero 9 and previously the Hero 7. They are about 16mm which is pretty wide and you tend to lose the impact of the large panorama shots but a truly functional camera for our needs. I also us my iPhone shooting in 4k to supplement the GoPro as it has slightly more reach at 28mm. Take care, Charlie.

    • @duncantaylor5993

Thanks Charlie, I thought it was wide, I used to have a 17mm for my Nikon, and it took some great pics, but had to be used with care, making sure there was lots of interest. The best one I took was from Stack Pollaidh looking north to Suilven, framed with the sandstone pinnacles, one of the greatest views anywhere. Stay safe dude.
