Debunking dopamine detox or dopamine fasting - It doesn't exist at all

  • Recently, a fad called dopamine detox or dopamine fasting became a famous practice that most people talk about. I don’t know where exactly it came from, but scientifically speaking, it's just wrong. There is no such thing as dopamine detox. Here, I debunked dopamine detox and dopamine fasting contents, and I use this topic to explain how exactly the neural cells work in our body and look into the different neural circuits in our brain that affect decision making.

Finally, real neurophysiology instead of that watered down version, from a physician, thank you, i am tired of seeing this stuff oversimplified.
Also, those thalamus and cortex abbreviations gave me PTSD from studying neurology, particulartly epilepsy lol.

When I was told my dopamine levels may be low, and I actively removed all prescription and OTC drugs that lower dopamine levels, my life improved dramatically. It wasn't necessarily dopamine, but it could be that whatever lowers my dopamine also critically lowers other hormones that I need. So these bozos are way off, at least for me.

Good video but I have 2 things to say: First let's not get lost in word plays and become science police lol. I mean when I tell you to eat the frog, I don't actually mean that you gotta go hunt and eat an actual frog in the morning while that poor thing is still alive and its blood pours out of your mouth while you chew on it -_- duh It's a wordplay. Second, It doesn't matter if you call it dopamine detox, fasting, impulsive control, or dopamine no no, the practice is about not indulging in harmful activities so much that it creates an imbalance in our reward system. Lastly, I like to mention that Harvard medical school has an article on Dopamine detox.

Hey man, thank you for your comment.
Yeah, it seems like a wordplay but it doesn't at all. I think some of their practice is beneficial for example, regulating social media use. But it doesn't mean you shouldn't work out because it increases dopamine in your reward system. And yet many of those marketing videos try to remove exercising and sell this nonsense. Moreover, the article that you mentioned is not a scientific type article. It's just an opinion of somebody without any data and variables. I think we should stick to the science and not make sth up with wordplay. Anyway, I really appreciate your comment and thank you for watching my video.

Thanks for this comment. Halfway through the video I realized it sounds like the dumb Neil degrasse Tyson thing where you avoid the topic entirely by pedantically acting like you know more, and make more sense, just because you can describe it in more depth in a way totally unrelated to the topic at hand. Yes the word "detox" has a dumb new age unscientific bent, but for fucks sake, the point is improving life. Most of the dopamine detox suggestions do improve life. It doesn't have to be peer reviewed science encompassing everything to be scientifically supported in each action. I'd recommend Andrew huberman if you absolutely require science based info to digest why something works

Thank you for your comment. I agree with some of your points like my previous comment in which I said some of their practice is beneficial. However, I still think everybody should know the whole truth. Those beneficial programs just work for motivation. It doesn't work for addiction, Impulsive, and compulsive behaviors. Andrew Huberman makes much more sense in terms of motivation and discipline (but not addiction and behavior ). In addiction and behavior, I am more agree with Dr. Gabor Maté (If you insist on an argument from authority but not science). Regardless, I still think we should be clear about the overall components of practice, and our promises that we offer to people should be based on science and data.

It's definitely named incorrectly. You're not actually detoxing dopamine, you're detoxing adrenaline. You remove activities that trigger adrenaline and replace them with healthy leisure activities that actually trigger dopamine production.
If you have ADHD, detoxing adrenaline and increasing dopamine can be life changing.

adernaline detoxing? This has nothing to do with adernaline
You must read what adernaline is. You produce adernaline when you are stressed or afraid, your heart will beat faster, you will going to sweet and so on.
When i was addicted to instagram i was really calm so.. Haha
Also, correction, you dont increase dopamine, is allways in you

@@hugoantunesartwithblender except that modern technology changed everything. Now our brains use a low level stream of adrenaline in place of serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins, etc. This is part of "survival mode". When you don't have that low level stream of adrenaline, you get stressed out and "bored".
