  • An interview with Benjamin Dykes about his new translation of the works of the 9th century astrologer Sahl ibn Bishr from Arabic.
    Sahl flourished around 815-825 CE, and wrote what became some of the foundational works on Medieval astrology.
    Ben's new book is a compilation if different works by Sahl on natal, electional, and horary astrology, titled The Astrology of Sahl B. Bishr, Volume I: Principles, Elections, Questions, Nativities.

    Ok just ordered this. You had me when you mentioned the thing about benefics in the 3rd house steering the meaning towards religion and malefics tending to signify siblings. Having jupiter in the 3rd house without this knowledge would seem to signify an abundance of siblings, but I'm an only child. But I resonate strongly with the idea that jupiter is influencing me more in the department of spirituality and interest in foreign things/ celestial matters, amplified more so by having venus and jupiter in mutual reception. So cool!

    1:16:00 - This is very interesting. I'd never seen retrograde planets associated with anything other than negative significations in traditional astrology other than being a good sign with missing objects. It's oddly similar to the very modern notion I've seen that retrograde planets are internalized - not quite the same, but remarkably close given that the delineations were derived independently.

    I would like to add to this anoretic degree issue in natal astrology. In my experience, which is a lot of charts at this point, the expression is diffused. So an ascendant or the sun ruling the midheaven, the native is lost about self or career. A great competing predicament occurs.
