Astrology - Fate and Destiny in Early Judaism and Islam - History of Jewish & Muslim Astrology

  • Astrology and montheism have long had a complicated relationship. In this episode of Esoterica we explore the early interactions of Judaism and Islam with astrology from the nature of the stars and planets, the role of astral forces in the Bible, Qur'an and Talmud, to the philosophical and legal interaction between astrological concepts and these two great monotheistic religions.
    This episode is also a collaboration with Ms. Esmé L. K. Partridge, an undergraduate student of Religion at SOAS, University of London and an independent researcher and writer on Islamic studies, mysticism and the place of religious thought in modernity. Her latest publication on the mystical meaning of the moon according to Ibn Arabi can be found in Volume 68 of The Journal of The Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society, and her other essays and articles can be accessed via her website, www.esmelkpartridge.com. You can also find her on Twitter at @EsmeLKPartridge.

    I was always fascinated by the fact that 3 MAGI who studied the stars were the first ones to know about the birth of the messiah, it’s like the Bible itself is saying these forms of divination are true and ordained by God

      It’s so validating to read your comment. This exact point has gripped me to the point of near obsession for the past 2 years. I just cannot let it go and have be searching for something somewhere to prove the link btw the two beyond any reasonable doubt.
      Sounds crazy but it almost feels like I was born knowing this as somehow “truth” yet it’s basically impossible to ever prove it as such.

      On March 20 of 2021, Jesus (the sun) will rise from the dead (winter). On this same date, Noah's Ark/Arc will come aground on the same spring equinox. Noah will wait for the ground to warm up before leaving his ship. God will remind him to remove his sandals as the ground is holy (warm).
      "God divided between the light and between the darkness" (Gen. 1:1). It is the East, the Orient, the Urim et Thumim, or the true light- the light par excellence, i.e., the equinoctial Sun of spring.

    I am on lesson 14 of Christopher Warnock's Astrological Magic Course. Traditional astrology aka Arabic astrology, is very technical and highly intuitive. .That is why it is so difficult to learn. The astrological magic in Picatrix is very sophisticated. Astral High Magic De Imaginibus of Thabit Ibn Qurra is also very sophisticated. I have learned to make planetary, fixed stars, mansions of the moon, constellation, face, & house based talismans.
    I have been plodding away at this stuff for over two years now. This type of astrology takes time to learn. This stuff is a blast to learn!! You will have a high level of astrological narrative if you take classes for this specific topic. I have both the Chris Warnock & John Michael Greer Picatrix, along with Dan Attrell & David Porreca Picatrix. The former is more practical, while the latter is more of an academic version. Both are great!!! I enjoyed this video!!

    This was another great episode. The history and philosophy of Astrology are a huge study and the beliefs in relation to religion were very insightful. When I was a child in "Sunday School", we were taught that Astrology was a form of or at least likened to Witchcraft and thus against Christianity and God. However in Italian folklore La Befana or the Witch of Epiphany is said to have taught the Magi where to find the infant Christ using her knowledge of Astrology. I found your reference about the Gospel of Mathew and the Star of Bethlehem and "polemicizing against the Jewish rejection of the messianic character of Jesus" very intriguing and deepened my understanding of the text. The facts you shared about The Jewish and Muslim ideas of Astrology really deepened my understanding around ancient and current ideas of Astrology... Thank you! If nothing else, stargazing on a clear night truly brings you into the totality of creation and an existential realization of being.

    Are you familiar with “The Star of Bethlehem: The Legacy of the Magi” (Rutgers Press, 1999), book by Michael R. Molnar. He seems to suggest that the Magi actually practiced a form of Greek astrology and he comes up with his own theory as to what astrological event would have portended the birth of Jesus and gives his hypothesis as to the date - in April 6 BC. It’s an interesting read, but my understanding of the technical aspects of astrology are cursory, at best. Do you have any thoughts on Molnar’s work, which is not without controversy? Could you do a video on Molnar and other theories about the Star of Bethlehem, perhaps part of your video playlist on Christianity and astrology?

    I've seen a couple of docs that suggest the "star" was a strange movement of planets in Aries (the sign of the Jews) and that something was happening in Judea way back then. So, Jesus was an Aries (April/May), which also fits the NT tradition of shepherds in the fields (not December). So interesting and not surprising how astrology runs through a lot of stories

I have always wondered about this. Fascinating character so mysteriously hidden in history and information disappearing at a rapid rate

    thank you for the information presented in this video!
    there seems to be great confusion over whether or not the study of astrology is or is not 'evil'.
    for me, knowing the planetary alignments is like listening to a weather forecast, Mercury in retrograde being a great example.
    there is no random, but there is free will. we choose what we do with the circumstances presented to us.
    each person's birth chart is like a chemical equation, but with frequencies; planetary alignments will effect each one based on their individual 'formula'.

    I'm personally not a believer in any supernatural phenomena (being both an Atheist and Christian apostate *gasp*) but the study is fascinating nonetheless.
    And I can't write it off entirely either, I see value in things like astrology or tarot as a sort of meditation, or a way to sort out one's thoughts.

  • @ioan_jivan
    @ioan_jivan ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As someone that has studied astrology and later found out that many interpretations of the Hebrew Bible prohibit it, I can only be surprised. But I have to add a question: is astrology divination? I don't know, but contemporary Western astrology doesn't seem to view it as divination, but rather as a way to determine the 'qualities' of a person, day, hour, etc. Mostly personality astrology, which once learned can be used a certain way, thus not very deterministic

    • @ioan_jivan
      @ioan_jivan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Are_WeThereYet I can see the point. But time lord isn't necessarily deterministic 'when interpreted by modern people. The idea of preparing for a Saturn period or waiting for Mercury to go out of retrograde is the opposite of deterministic, is it not? People don't believe they are changing fate by planning according to what the stars 'say', they believe they're accounting for metaphysical forces when making their decisions.
      Most go to astrology to get simple life hacks, like how to choose a partner (that's probably the most common) or career. If they would believe it's all fate people would just to prepare mentally for what's coming and that's it. No psychological astrology.

    • @seshenofthenile2363

      It touches on the topic of predestination. Yes, it is clear that our birth charts are set the moment we are born, however, we still make choices and can change things that would or could have come to past. It would not be divination because the details of one's life were already "planned" for lack of a better word, and therefore you would be just observing what was already predetermined by God or maybe even your preborn self. Whatever a person's belief is, it would have no bearings on the validity or outcome of a person's planetary chart. It simply is what it is.

    I always wonder how does diferent astrological systems work simultaneousley
    for example, today is the christian-gregorian calendar is the 7th day of the 3rd month indicating the sign of pisces and in the muslim-hijri calendar is the 23rd day of the 7th month indicating the sign of leo. Are both valid ? How does this happen ?. Are both valid ? How does this happen ?
    is it that each one has their own realm on the mundus imaginalis wherein they operate ?
    sort of like, as Ms. Esmé L. K. Partridge quotes in this video, Abu Ma'shar says "Astrology is the fruit of Astronomy". So astronomy would be the tree from where this diferent astrological fruits sprung up
    I always find it helpful to think about this in a comparitive way with economy and ecology. With the former being a more general-theoretical-abstract science and the latter a particular-practical-tangible one
