    Many of you asked me for a tutorial, so here it is. I hope this helps.
    I used de-chlorinated water all throughout.
    The soil is generic organic potting soil. Main ingredients in the soil are vermicompost and chicken manure compost.
    Plants:
    Hairgrass
    (Eleocharis parvula)
    Baby Tears
    (Hemianthus callitrichoides)
    Pearl grass
    Hemianthus micranthemoides
    Gymnopedie 2

    This is mainly a tutorial for setting up this tank: th-cam.com/video/TYrqG3ORTGo/w-d-xo.html
    Windowsill dirted vase is very difficult to maintain, especially until the plants get established.

    Red tiger lotus is great for those tall floor vase tanks. I bought one on impulse at Walmart. A floor vase (identical to the tall one in your video), aquarium gravel, and I rescued one of their bettas. They were selling mixed bundles of mystery bulbs and I dropped them in. No ferts or soil or filter and the one bulb that grew filled the tank and sent red lily pads to the top. Had it next to my LED desk lamp. I accidentally nuked the plant with a peroxide experiment (dealing with an algae bloom). Burned everything completely off the plant, it just grew right back. It's crazy that that plant isn't more popular.

    This video is older but I just found it. I am successful with all my planted tanks but your book suggestion in another video and now this has me wanting to try these techniques and put water vases in all my windows. I use anoxic filters in my bigger aquariums but have never needed all these water changes and adding ferts like so many have suggested. I like these style of tanks. Thanks for your sharing!

      I can guarantee you that only the pearl grass would survive even in low light environment. The other vessels are too small and it takes a few weeks for the bacteria to settle. Mine started to die at first then recover and now it's growing steadily, but it took me 2-3 months to get the plants comfortable in that environment.

      @FootheFlowerhorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If you're gonna try this, I would suggest doing the one like the bowl, or the 5 gallon one, where I used a heater and a CFL light. that would have the stable environment for the plants to do well. anything below 26°C or 78°F, plants might not grow fast. use a timer, so that the photo period is pretty exact each day. photo period should be preferably more than 10 hours as plants think it's summer light hours and grow faster. the key to not getting algae is having a close to perfect amount of light. your CFL or florescent should be around 2watts per gallon. use coolwhite, or 6500K. anything higher wattage or wrong color, you'll probably get algae. If you use LED, you might get algae. water will get brown in the beginning. a little brown is ok, but too much, you gotta do 50% water change. make sure your cap gravel is thicker than the soil. you probably want floating plants to help the water quality. b/c the leaves are above the water, they'll get all the co2 they need and grow well.
      In my experience, the best plants for this kind of setup are:
      Fast growers: water nymph(Najas guadalupensis), Narrow Leafed Anacharis(Egeria najas), rotala indica.
      vallisneria only grew fast after it got established, which took nearly 3 months. int he beginning, it was kind of a slow grower.
      Slow growers, but did well: dwarf hairgrass, bacopa caroliniana, java moss
      best floating plant by far: duckweed. salvania did ok. I also tried amazon frog bits, and they grew too fast also and block too much light. water lettuce did too well and got too big and blocked too much light.
      There were other plants, but some just died and got buried by other plants. plants compete with each other, so certain combination of plants won't do well in some cases. sort of like dandelion vs lawn grass. if you put the two together, the dandelion will win...
      you also gotta consider the height of the aquarium. some plants grow tall and you have to trim them. some plants take a long time to recover if you trim them. during that time, they might stall, and algae might grow on them.
      healthy and growing plants release chemicals that naturally fight algae. if the plants aren't healthy and stall from the shock of trimming, they can't produce the chemical to fight off the algae.
      there are quite a lot of expensive plants in this hobby. I would suggest staying away from them for this kind of setup. more expensive plants usually require very mature tank and high tech with co2 injection. hope this helps. good luck.

      Wow, thank you so much, this is really helpful! yeah i'm gonna try three or four bowls of 1, 2 and 3 gallons with only plant, i've started today.. just preparing the materials.. im gonna use artificial light and i'm gonna try with no heater just because my enviroment is pretty warm all the year.. Soil is a very nutrient rich substrate so you definitely have nutrients. Keep a plant in an aquarium with virtually no nutrients and it will die, a body of water without nutrients will not happen unless you use RODI water.
    Your water also has CO2, it balances itself with the atmospheric air and a filter isnt really necessary for planted tanks (unless you plan to stock heavily), what matters is to have a good flow of water but again, not necessary in small bodies of water.
    Anyways, I get where you are coming from and the video is definitely interesting, it shows the assets of dirted tanks and how to correctly set them up (making sure not to leave bubbles in the dirt etc...). I believe that with strong light and a good substrate you can grow anything. I was able to grow a relatively demanding plant, Ammania gracilis, on a dirted tub at my yard but it obviously got very strong light. Was this practical? No, it is impossible to get the same ammount of sunlight inside my house (even if I leave it in front of a window) but was it possible? Hell yeah. To grow this plant in my aquariums I had to use dirt as a substrate, liquid ferts, good light and co2 (I was able to get away with DIY CO2 being diffused by a powerhead), it also grows better and faster inside because of the other additions I made, but as said it had a decent growth outside.
    Overall it was a great and well edited video. Congratulations.

    hi friend, it may be a bit ridiculous for doing translation through translate. I've done exactly what you've done, see if I can be successful? I only used chicken manure that was pulled at the bottom of the mill and I put it on the ground by eliminating it from the sieve. I used 3 cm soil on top. I'll add shrimp after 1 week of water still blurred

    Would love to make these but I have some questions: If these are for the window sill, how do you avoid algae? And why must the water sit for 24 hours? (Please no one say "that's so the chlorine evaporates", that's not how it works. Especially with dechlorinated water)

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As mentioned in the pinned comment, this is very hard to do to be successful. The temps, the setup, the duration of sunlight all gotta be pretty balanced for it to work. If the plants are doing very well, you won't get much algae. If the plants don't do well, it can get algae. Adding snails will probably help. the 24 hour wait is just for the substrate to settle and the cloudiness of the water to settle. You could skip the 24 hour wait if the water is clean. I don't recommend this for beginners. This was more of a tutorial. I did a proper tutorial later with fluorescent light and a heater.

    It is a great and simple tutorial. Following the rule of the previous video you said you use 2-3 watts light PCL bulb for each gallon. Let say this will have a 1.5 Liter , how much light would be good for this set-up?

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use 8~10 watts.

    • @lecombattantbr

      I got a 5w LED bulb that I have on my house and I will monitor how it goes.
      I have done the setup following your video. It was simple to do it, I just had to re-do the process as I have initially put to much water with the soil and later added the gravel. That was messy. So, I understood after that we need to add just a little of water and do not go over the soil to make the gravel sit on top and hold all the dust under it. The water is crystal clear!!! Thanks a lot

    Is it safe to assume the plastic bottle with holes was just to disperse the force of dropping the water and to not stir up sediment and dislodge your vegetation placement?

  • @roughcutretrospect7235
    @roughcutretrospect7235 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So just use organic potting soil, and gravel. No filter? No Co2? No aquarium lights? I am going to try this. But I am concerned about algae with the sunlight. I guess if you do water changes every other day it should be ok right?

    • @FootheFlowerhorn
      @FootheFlowerhorn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, yes....but this windowsill setup can be very difficult to make it work. until the plants get established, it'll require a lot of babysitting.
      This is mainly a tutorial for my 5 gallon CFL betta tank b/c many people asked me for it. I think if you're trying a dirted tank for the first time, you should try with a CFL and a heater one.
