9 Months Update - (Saving Amano Larvae) NO filter, NO CO2, NO Ferts 5 Gallon Nano Tank

- This is 9 months update. The fish are called Sparkling or Pygmy gourami.
This was a crazy month. I lost my favorite shrimp of all time.
Breeding Amano:
Half of the water is tap water b/c I wanted to grow algae. Specifically brown diatoms. Top off and water changes were done using ro/di water. 10% water change every 3 days to remove surface protein.
I used hydrometer and thermometer in one to just check the fluctuation in salinity and the temperature in real time due to evaporation b/c the tank is so small.

I don’t know why the larvae only lived for 19 days. Maybe the temps were too high 26~28°C (79~82°F). Or maybe the salinity was off. ~33ppt. Or the water quality wasn’t good since the tank was so small and relied only on algae for water quality. The light was 14W daylight color single T5 fluorescent left on for 18 hours day for one week, then 13 hours thereafter. I lightly fed them yeast and spirulina every few days, but mostly they were eating the diatoms.
Finding out male or female (sparkling gouramis):
It’s pretty straight forward. At certain angle and the light behind them with preferably light background color, the belly will be transparent. The female has long “organ” and the male doesn’t. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Video at 8:16
The gouramis only fight like this when they pair up and start to breed. They also seem to go after the shrimp when they breed. Usually they leave the shrimp alone.

This is a bad episode for Amano's clan. A total whip out of all members. A dark episode with such intense build up and twist, started with hope when Amano gets a new tank and eventually ended up with the worst tragedy of the series. A turning point of the show.

Ben a pixel 2 on a small desktop tripod could do it given you have good lighting... smartphone cameras these days are damn good...one TH-camr did a pretty long fast movement video using a Red camera and a LG G6...and most people who saw the video picked the G6 as the winner...phones have the capability to do hardware based post processing on the fly which really makes a massive difference when your just looking for something that looks good and doesn't require a lot of work in post.
I just had no idea the focal length could get so good on phones, very impressive

Poor Amano could never catch a break. Her babies always died. Then she was separated from the male for a day so she could give birth but it probably stressed her out. That's probably why she off'd herself. That or she caught the male Amano with the Dragonfly Nymph. 🤔

Oh no! The fish were fighting because they were all waiting to eat some baby shrimps but you fooled them! Only they didn’t know it was you and they started suspecting each other until war broke out! Then the mother, grieving the perceived loss of yet another bunch of youngsters, takes her own life...but if she’d only waited a little while longer the few that did survive would have returned to her! OMG this is so sad! It’s like a fish version of Game of Thrones!

I used a 5mm acrylic tube and "transparent plastic ball container". I only used a half of the ball container. It's pretty straight forward. I bend the acrylic as shown in the video. I drilled a hole in the middle of the ball container, and a few more holes so the air would escape when the bubbles accumulate in it. I super glued the ball container to the acrylic tube.
It's crazy, how life like that? Develops their own personality, and starts to notice what's around them! But, it creates war! It's not just humans, it's just how life is!

I have a trio of amanos in my tank and the female is carrying eggs. I looked into hatching and raising them and I learned it is nearly impossible to do in captivity! They're are so delicate and finicky; their wild counterparts have a much better shot of making it to adulthood.
You made a great effort, even if it didn't work out. I admire your dedication and love of these little critters.

I thought Amano shrimp couldn't have their young survive outside of a brackish or oceanic swampy area? That they needed the salt water to thrive? Your's seem to be surviving and thriving without it?
Pup314 the larva and shrimplets develop in brackish water. The adults live in mostly fresh water. That's why you saw him check the salinity and add the larva to it. Then added adults back to the fresh. I think there is more to it but that is the jist. Hope it helps

I suspect foul play. I believe the male Amano caught the female Amano and the male Gourami carrying on together behind the weed. He flew (or swam) into a fit of jealous rage, bludgeoned them both to death with a snail before disposing of both of their bodies by throwing them out of the tank. Then realizing what he had done he escaped from the tank and scuttled off to Mexico where works as a male masseuse under the pseudonym of Juan Jose Carlos

Your videos got me into aquaria, but today I got my Sparkling gourami. I watched your videos so many times but to see them in person.. they are such predators! My other fish in the tank don't mind them, but the smaller things are gone. I had a thriving population of copepods and soon will introduce daphnia. To those that are new I would strongly recommend not ignoring that these little fish are not minnows or timid danios... they are the T-Rexes of a small aquarium! They have ignored dead food in favor of hunting. This is natural, probably normal but you do not really get it from the videos. These guys want to HUNT. They do not want to be FED. They are not scared of a huge face coming up to the glass, they don't mind you watching them for half an hour. Have floating plants and enjoy a tiny great white shark in your tank. Mine are in a 33 long and are accustomed to flake food but ignore it in favor of eradicating my infusoria! Tomorrow my daphnia culture arrives and I will be feeding these little guys as much as I can from them. Got a few 55 gallon drums waiting for the cultures. Be prepared to make your fish happy, they don't want frozen bloodworms!
