They should have cast most honorable Keye Luke as the famous sleuth. He played #1 son in Warner Oland Chan pictures and would later play voice of Detective Chan in "Amazing Chan and the Chan clan". I'm partial though. Mr. Luke is a fine actor.

I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's all of one time, and even then, didn't finish watching it, and I thought the same thing. Keye Luke, Victor Sen-hung, Sammee Tong. They had so many to choose from and they go with Mickey Rooney, thinking it would come across as "a performance."

That is so true but I think they felt. Well Charlie was always played by an American or a British actor. I think they felt they were honoring the tradition. LMAO 🤣
Ross Martin is a very interesting choice by any means. He is known for somewhat of a drama / comedy actor. Most of the old Charlie chan movies were billed as comedy. I think it was mostly due to the comedy styles of Mantan Moreland aka Birmingham Brown.

All this did while watching was appreciate how awesome Sidney Toler was as an actor, believe it or not, Mr.Toler practiced his character for the observer, of what they wanted Charlie Chan to appear to those watching. In essence, they dialed it in the character by what others watching with their critical opinion, till they finally achieved what others wanted Charlie Chan to be, not what the actor thinking he should be as Charlie Chan, criticism excepted without the ego produces some real (rare) Hollywood gems, 99% will never know this.

The storyline had many twists in it. It kept me guessing. I love Ross Martin!! He was a theatrical performer who knew how to use disguises and use them to his advantage. Yes, he was Artemus Gordon on the series, "The Wild, Wild West". That, I believe gave him the chance to fine tune his craft. To me, he can portray anyone he set his mind to. Miss him very much!

I feel the absence of Mantan Moreland. He was the extra spice that made the Charlie Chan movies so entertaining that audiences forgave any flaws a particular film might have. Without him, this movie is just like potatoes without gravy: still nice but something's missing. He was one of the most brilliant comic actors in the golden age, and it's just not the same without him.

    • @crazymotherdance7317

I agree with you if it wasn't for Mantan Moreland bringing some comical in it , just would have been another mystery. I liked Charlie Chan with Warner Oland & Sidney To let. When Charlie showed his family picture with 13 kids and another on the way his boss asked him when he was going to take a vacation.

If they were to make a new Charlie Chan movie today, who would be the best actor to play Charlie? I assume that we would finally get a Chinese actor in the role. The stickiest question is how would they write Burmingham Brown for a modern audience? He has to be smart, so he doesn't offend anyone, but he still has to bring the humor.
I think a new Chan movie could win audiences today, but the very first few minutes on the screen would have to show Chan, and he would have to be brilliant in those minutes. You'd watch and go, "Yes, that's Chan! They are portraying him perfectly!"
The Chan movies always worked because they were funny, not because they were great mysteries. The key to getting it right is to stay true to Chans main characteristics. Chan was always classy, always smart, and most of all, he was always quick with the dry humor.

That sounds great. Jackie Chan is well known already, comedy is his specialty, and he's about the right age now.
Now for casting Burmingham. Who could they get? Kevin Hart, maybe? He has self-deprecating humor down to a science. The trick is to write the part to get the laughs that Mantan got, but without being as cowardly.
I think it could be done without anyone screaming about racism.

A lot of comments about not using an asian to portray Chan, but they miss the point. A chinese actor just would not be credible in the iconic role, certainly in the '40s, and probably not even in this update. Charlie is a fictional representation based on the somewhat mysterious mores and culture of the Far East, much like ancient Egypt, darkest Africa and the Nazi regime of WWII. We view these eras through a subtle haze that softens our perceptions when we look back, and like CGI animation in modern flicks, any attempt to "sharpen realism" by politically correct casting would shatter the mood and throw the viewer right out of the fictional illusion. It would be as bad as trying to project our current culture of victimhood and entitlement into more responsible and individualistic cultures of the past...

It's 100% understandable why an actual Asian actor wasn't cast as Charlie Chan back in the 1930s when Warner Oland was handling the role. It had a lot to do with box office, and you can condemn the racism of the time for the general audience's not accepting Asian casting. Hollywood had actually tried casting an Asian actor in the first Charlie Chan film appearance (now lost), but the film was not a big hit. On the other hand, the films with Warner Oland did make lots of money. However, by the early 1970s and for a TV film, there's no reason the producers shouldn't have cast an Asian actor.

The only thing more unbelievable, than Ross Martin, portraying Charlie Chan, is Charlie Chan pulling up, in a dune buggy😁⁉️ Or better yet, accepting Leslie Nielsen, as a Greek🤭!!! Surely (yeah, yeah), you jest. Speaking of Greeks; Hadrachi, as a greek surname?? That's Italian. Some script writer, back then, didn't do, all their homework. I also noticed Charlie, wearing something, he never does; a scarf. Reminiscent, of that time perhaps (1973). Look at the following year, in 'Murder On The Orient Express', with inspector Perriot (spell check is useless). Correction; the copyright date at the end, reads 1971.

Well if I can't have Warner Oland, I'll take Ross Martin. My only complaint is not with Ross's performance. which was at least on Sydney Toler level, was his English was too good; he was way too poetic and native speaker sounding. It's a writing problem. There should have been more bad grammar, low level vocabulary and chinglish. That's a minor complain. I really enjoyed it!

Part of being an actor is making believe you're someone you're not. I don't think most Chinese actors are interested in such a role, though I would love to see Jackie Chan do it without any martial arts.

still couldn't find a Chinese actor for the part, Hollywood didn't look hard enough

This has made for TV all over it. The fruit of Hollywood gone north to save on costs. Seldom have so many bad accents been in one movie. Even the silly end of the series Chan B movies are a cut above this one.

You would think after so many years that Hollywood would have the sense to use a real Chinese actor to pay Charlie Chan instead of this terrible substitute. I can stand to watch this. He is so unbelievable as A China-man, I quit.

No offense intended for the actors here but none of them can match Sidney Toler. The "modern" remakes of these old movies almost always end in disaster! This is no exception!!

I am enjoying this film; however, I am wondering if it was not possible to get actors of a Turkish or Chinese/Hawaiian background.

I can't remember his real name but he plays Steven Chan here in this movie should have been playing Charlie Chan. The actor playing Charlie Chan in this movie is about as Chinese as I'm Gueen Elizabeth of England and he's crappie acting as Charlie Chan. Blah, yuck, yucky otherwise this movie and it's story line would have been better.

Honestly, they should have just made a movie with Ross in it, and I am sure people would watch, but calling it Charlie Chan, no.

The Naked Gun actor I, II, III, is hard to take serious. This is a horrible movie. It hurts to watch. I was waiting for the Pink Panther to step in at any time, he didn't.
