Another Charlie Chan mystery solved and superbly done as usual. This is the way movies should be shot. Outstanding camera work and the audio is perfect. Every syllable can be heard and the music are all in one volume setting. (no up & downs) on volume control knobs. Thanks for posting these old greats.

The quality audio engineering is a credit to radio veteran Al Protzman, who worked sound on several Chan films, this being the last. In 1936 he resigned as 20th's assistant sound director to return to his old employer, NBC, then just starting television program tests. He became their first camera operator.
Later, as TV's first technical director, Protzman helped formulate small-screen production technique, which he explained in a pioneering 1939 paper to the Society of Motion Picture Engineers. He retired in 1966 as NBC's chief of studio operations.

what makes this and similar movies great is the fact that some highly intelligent and profoundly knowledgeable people were involved in the making. this is also the reason that such movies are underrated.

I remember watching these Charlie Chan movies on the local UHF station when I was a kid. I still enjoy them, but this time without the horrible TV "snow" we had back in the analog TV days.

New comer to Charlie Chan films, my 4th one now. Each one is unique. I like the science Chan discusses in each episode. He's part scientist, detective, and whatever else he needs to be to solve the puzzle. It's like watching 'Indiana Jones' but the props are real. Thank you!

Stop complaining about the 5 second commercials,if you watch regular t.v. they go for minutes at a time. I watch these over and over again, that short pause is not a big deal.
An hourlong show will have at least 15 minutes of commercials.

One of the classic Charlie Chan quips, and there are many, (kudos to the writers) is here, at the beginning. (boat scene) Francis Ford's character (boat captain) tells Chan that the situation with this Allan Colby, is a potential death knell for the Colby estate ("tough on the Colby heirs") if he's alive, which has Chan replying; "tough on Allan Colby if dead". Might be my favorite of Chan's.
This is one of my favorites of Charlie Chan movies i prefer Warner Oland as Charlie Chan. I loved Keye Luke too as Number One son. Missed him in this one. Great entertainment

Warner Olands portrayal of Chan was the closest to the character in the novels
It appears that good ol' Charlie Chan had his own version of a "bat-belt" that he used to carry a flashlight, a telescope, a gun, and who knows what else.

A 1960's kid I loved these black&white Charlie chan, I always watched Sidney Tolar and didn't know about Oland, but he's really good too.
That butler was hilarious.
Rudolph Mate was one of the great cinematographers. He lensed “The Passion Of Joan Of Arc” among others, and as director directed the noir classic “D.O.A.”
He also filmed the Sci fi classic "When Worlds Collide."

I believe D.O.A. was Neville Brand's first movie.
He had an extraordinary/interesting life. (Lost heartbeat twice on the battlefield in Europe, claims to have read a book every day of his life after the war, list about 30,000 books when his home burned, fought PTSD with alcohol).

They never said it because they weren't in a movie- no audience would have time for an autopsy in the middle of their viewing!
in the past, autopsy were very uncommon, esp if there was an obvious wound.

It's difficult to watch the first Charlie Chan. He was a gifted actor but sadly addicted to alcohol.

No other actor after Oland ever did the Asians they portrayed ( because racist censors did not allow for an Asian to touch a white actresses or the reverse either his claim to the “Asian” ancestor allowed him wiggle room and his respect for the people he was supposed to represent) as his character also shows as no other actor at that time or even those who came after Portrayed or showed respect as he did he was Charlie Chan all the rest portrayed the character as a condescending racist joke, they came of as poor imitation of what the Character was supposed to be.
Another interesting note is the author Earl Derr Biggers based the character on a real Hawaiian detective who was Chinese name was Chang Apana. His purpose was to stop the Idea of the Asian or Yellow peril portrayed in characters of the time like Fu Manchu etc. No one but Warner Oland could bridge the wall created by racist at the time as Warner Oland did… Sidney Toller couldn’t nor could anyone else.
Fun fact: the US helped the real "Yellow peril" take form, when China turned capitalist, by sending off all its manufacturing facilities there, facilitating Chinese access to technology. As Lenin said, "capitalists are stupid enough to sell the rope to hang them".
That's exactly what happened with China, which has become a major competitor to US industry, by designing and manufacturing its own products, in addition to manufacturing Western companies' products.
Werner Roland was the best Chan.

Most people who pretend to care about others, really only think about themselves. This pretense is common in people who want to have their own way and appear so loving and kind. His wife, Janice, here, has the same attitude to the real heir of the dead man's fortune. Then, in the end, Janice she claims "I didn't know". Yes, maybe to actual murder she doesnot know but she is privy to everything else.

Don't have a real answer but in one of Diggers' books, he tells us Charlie Chan lives on Punchbowl; that's an old creator on O'ahu tha now has a Veterans' Cemetary with a beautiful view of Honolulu, Chinatown and the Port. I always imagined a large rambling house with lanais on all sides. Aloha

You get to see the house (well, probably 2 different houses) in 2 of the movies. The first surviving example is in "Black Camel," and you only see the dining room there. The 2nd time is in the Honolulu movie; you also see the dining room in that films, but you then see a little more of the house in it.
Films 1, 3, 4, and 5 are lost. The book versions of each of those movies are supposed to have survived, though.

The captain does say to the crew "as soon as you get Duke aboard we'll be on our way" don't know if Duke is man or dog.
No one plays Charlie Chan with respect to the point of being believable as Warner Oland did he played him and showed such respect that real Chinese in China ( one of the films was either partially shot there or promoted there I forget which) were willing to believe his claim to Asian ancestry (supposedly on his mother’s side- Mongolian ) he learned Chinese which not a single other replacement for him even bothered to do, he became it is said proficient in the language… he portrayed Charlie Chan as a very believable person, such was his acting skill it is sad to note that he drank himself to death in Sweden but his ex wife loved him enough to give him a proper barrial, going so far as to bring his ashes back to the states and barring him.
