It wasn't a good idea for entertainment in the back seat of the car unless we wanted Mommy (or Daddy) to pull over. We also loved this thing where we'd play dress-up, stuff our blouses with curves made out of socks, use a long pencil for a cigarette, and say, "Come up and see me sometime, big boy." LOL. I don't think we even knew where that one came from. Times will never be that much side-splitting fun again. I heard not long back that my Number Three Granddaughter and her little friends, all about age 8, were seen by grownups hollering, "Shot!" and tossing back small glasses of Kool-Aid. Innocence! Where did it go?
I liked Charlie chan and Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. They sometimes came on Friday or Saturday matinees or when a baseball game got rained out.Rainout Theater.I also enjoyed The million dollar movie on channel 9.I am old it doesn’t take much time or money to make me happy.I love God and people and+I miss the innocent times.Ugh oh the rose colored tint is fading off my glasses

I’m remember maybe 10 years ago there was a PC backlash about Charlie Chan as if this Chinese detective (no one actor was actually Chinese) was being denigrated. Odd as he was always the sharpest tool in the the box. I loved how his actual Asian progeny spoke English in the colloquial.

Sunday noon on WGN in the '80s: Sunday Mystery Theatre. Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, Bulldog Drummond, occasionally The Falcon, Mr. Wong, Mr. Moto or some other obscure movie detective. A very pleasant way to spend an hour waiting for the Cubs game announced by Harry Carey and Jack Brickhouse (or switch over to the Bears game.)
I’ve read all the Charlie Chan books by Earl Derr Biggers - they were terrific. The early Warner Oland Charlie Chan movies were the best. Sydney Toler’s were enjoyable. I stopped watching the movies after Toler - they went from B grade to C grade. “Charlie Chan’s Secret” was one of the best of the series.
A B movie was a less expensively made movie but - like the Charlie Chan movies could be very good. A C movie is a step down from a B movie as the name implies - even less spent on the production and the actors etc - and a weaker script.
It's really sad that in some circles these movies are remembered as an example of early 20th century racism. Because talk all you want about perceived stereotypes, and Chan being played by people who are not ethnically Chinese, and what that implies about casting at the time; these are still movies that came out in the mid 30's and early 40's that show a Chinese hero and his family in a favorable light, respected and well treated, not the comic relief, and often appearing less ridiculous than the white characters. These movies were, dare I say it, progressive for their time. It's almost as though political correctness doesn't understand context or nuance.
You have hit the nail on the head Charlie Chan, Mr Moto, & Mr Wong were created to show Chinese and Japanese people in a good light in opposed to the yellow peril Fu Manchu films that were so prevalent at the time.
Frankly, I get more than just a little sick and tired of the anti-White bias in today's culture. I, as a White male, have often been, and am now constantly, the victim of 'racism'. Don't forget who built this country in the first place.
I loved Warner Oland as Charlie Chan and when Lee number one son was with him. The other CC spoke strangely and had the goofiest son. Just noticed the Clipper Ship flying over the partially completed Oakland Bay Bridge. The towers are up but the road bed has yet to be laid. The Golden Gate has no island in the middle so this is definitely the OBB.

Maybe my favorite Warner Oland Charlie Chan reply here at the 1:45-1:55 mark, when the captain tells Charlie that the reappearance after a mysterious seven year absence of Alan Colby, to claim the fortune from his father's death, much to the chagrin ("TOUGH on the Colby heirs") of the other heirs, and Charlie replies it'll be "TOUGH on Alan Colby if dead". The deliveries of these type of retorts by both Oland Warner's Charlie Chan and Sidney Toler's, are priceless.
The opening credits it says this movie is from 1935, not 1936. It doesn't really matter, it's still a great old movie! I still remember certain scenes in this movie, from my childhood, in the mid1950's, watching on Saturday afternoons! My Mothers voice in the background saying "Why don't you go outside and play!"
legion1a Many of the older movies were released different years than they were produced. There are several made just prior to Pearl Harbor that were held until after the war because emotional, ethical or the star was enlisted and attentions were directed to that effort. It was a time when the nation cared about these issues. They are wonderful movies and were crafted for distraction and entertainment. Fellow fan!
You have to love the writing for Chan's vintage axioms. The boat captain says "a man walks out on a fortune seven years ago, then all of a sudden he appears from nowhere to claim it, I'd say that's a little tough on the Colby heirs, if he's alive"- and Charlie Chan replies that it's a tough on Alan Colby, if dead"-too good.
How perfectly horrible. The villain sat up smiling, everybody clapped, and the butler went on being hilarious for nearly breaking his neck, going without sleep, being sneered at and shot to the delight of the audience until he was forgotten two-thirds or so through the show. And the villain triumphed! I could cheerfully kick this film in the can! (Just this one, cuz I love Charlie Chan.)

Great. A Charlie Chan movie I had not seen before. Crisp footage and sound. Better yet the little comic relief was by Baxter the butler Not the annoying son or chauffeur who brought way to much and to long on comedy to Chan movies.
Warner Oland is so good as Charlie - just a bit of an accent - very respectful of the character. great comedic character, too.. they always do this so well in all the Charlie Chan pictures. miss Number One son though :) 😋🌷 I did know one thing at the end. just didn't fit Chan plots :)
In this film (which had a very unusual-for CC-twist), Charlie's vest was like Batman's utility belt. Let's see, he pulls out a pocketknife, a gun, a flashlight, AND a telescope! OK, so the pocketknife came from his pants pocket, but it COULD have come from his vest!

watching this for a second time,and out of curiosity read of actor Herbert Mundin (Baxter) - really funny guy, but sudden his end came. Just 8 years over all in Hollywood.

Did anyone notice the Golden Gate bridge under construction at 8:14? The movie is 1936 and the bridge opened the following year.

Love all Charlie Chan movies I like all the Charlie Chan actors. What killed these wonderful movies is pc. You can't say or do anything without offending someone which is stupid. If you don't like it don't watch them. At least they aren't swearing Thank God for that.

Maybe my favorite Warner Oland Charlie Chan reply here at the 1:45-1:55 mark, when the captain tells Charlie that the reappearance after a mysterious seven year absence of Alan Colby, to claim the fortune from his father's death, much to the chagrin ("TOUGH on the Colby heirs") of the other heirs, and Charlie replies it'll be "TOUGH on Alan Colby if dead". The deliveries of these type of retorts by both Oland Warner's Charlie Chan and Sidney Toler's, are priceless.

There are several made just prior to Pearl Harbor that were held until after the war because emotional, ethical or the star was enlisted and attentions were directed to that effort. It was a time when the nation cared about these issues. They are wonderful movies and were crafted for distraction and entertainment. Fellow fan!

You have to love the writing for Chan's vintage axioms. The boat captain says "a man walks out on a fortune seven years ago, then all of a sudden he appears from nowhere to claim it, I'd say that's a little tough on the Colby heirs, if he's alive"- and Charlie Chan replies that it's a tough on Alan Colby, if dead"-too good.
How perfectly horrible. The villain sat up smiling, everybody clapped, and the butler went on being hilarious for nearly breaking his neck, going without sleep, being sneered at and shot to the delight of the audience until he was forgotten two-thirds or so through the show. And the villain triumphed! I could cheerfully kick this film in the can! (Just this one, cuz I love Charlie Chan.)

Great. A Charlie Chan movie I had not seen before. Crisp footage and sound. Better yet the little comic relief was by Baxter the butler Not the annoying son or chauffeur who brought way to much and to long on comedy to Chan movies.

Warner Oland is so good as Charlie - just a bit of an accent - very respectful of the character. great comedic character, too.. they always do this so well in all the Charlie Chan pictures. miss Number One son though :) 😋🌷
I did know one thing at the end. just didn't fit Chan plots :)
In this film (which had a very unusual-for CC-twist), Charlie's vest was like Batman's utility belt. Let's see, he pulls out a pocketknife, a gun, a flashlight, AND a telescope! OK, so the pocketknife came from his pants pocket, but it COULD have come from his vest!

To bad there are no new detective movies The closest to me is Colombo but they play the repeats so manny times have seen all of them To bad Colombo always hooks on to a suspect and no other suspect to investigate for the crime !Charley has many suspects it makes for suspense !
I bought this series online via Walmart.com...my daughter borrowed them and lost them in a move. I may have to order again; but ever so thankful they have been uploaded and shared.
Your irresponsible daughter should replace them. She borrowed. She lost. She owes.

watching this for a second time,and out of curiosity read of actor Herbert Mundin (Baxter) - really funny guy, but sudden his end came. Just 8 years over all in Hollywood.
I like it much better without Number 1, Number 2, or the daughter, or Birmingham. Here, the action was more to the point. Thank you for sharing.
