Watch this growing up ...love old movies....can't beat them ..
I remember Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, Dick Tracy, The Shadow all on radio, actually really enjoyed it.
I can hardly wait for the next show of Charlie chane. I like the old ones of Charlie Chan. They are my favorite mystery stories. I hope you keep them on .

@@remmymafia3889 Actually Black Camel is the oldest surviving film. The first Charlie Chan movie with Warner Oland was Charlie Chan Carries On (made earlier the same year in 1931), and it among 3 other of the Oland movies are lost films, which is very unfortunate.

This is my very favorite Charlie Chan movie, ever. I've seen most of them, I think, and it's the best. Love Warner Oland!!! I am third generation Swedish and fascinated by the fact that he is Swedish too. He's so awesome … he was an alcoholic, and it killed him in the end. I hope somehow he knew the pleasure he gave us all through the years. Just a wonderful character actor. Thank you again for the movies.

In my opinion he was the the best Charlie Chan, and he even looked Chinese when made up. He was great at speaking the way they do too. I loved all of the Charlie Chan movies, they were great entertainment for the masses of people, that's for sure!
@@chirelle.alanalooney8609 He was wearing less makeup than you'd think. He was actually part Mongolian! His eyes were his own. He was very serious about Charlie and put a lot of effort into authenticity, even learned to speak Cantonese. He was welcomed in China and very much loved.
It's probably not just the alcohol. People smoked like crazy in those years, and the cigarettes weren't even filtered. There was no big stigma against tobacco back then. Didn't he die of lung cancer at 58? EDIT: I read it was Pneumonia. Still, Alcoholism couldn't have helped.
@@chirelle.alanalooney8609 Warner Oland was in some other movies in the 30s, such as "Bulldog Drummond Strikes Back" (1934.) That's one of the only 1930s Drummond movies I haven't watched, and it's also a great series. Most of them are public domain now, I don't know if that one is. The series is about a WWI Veteran who's tired of civilian life, so he decides to willingly go after crime - at first, that is, and then it kind of just falls into his lap without his trying. There's some adventure and comedy in them (typically,) and also a real great English Butler who's not afraid of adventure while being as properly English as you'd expect a butler to be.
Mind, you should probably watch "Bulldog Drummond's Secret Police" or "Bulldog Drummond's Bride" to start out. A few of them can seem a bit dated by now, such as the 1929 movie, or the one where someone takes his place since he was in a car wreck, or the Africa one. But it's still an enjoyable series.
Everytime I see this movie the butler is just as funny as birmingham and chattanooga as they be helping with cases,too funny😂😅😁😃😄😆!!!
When the old lady says to the butler, "You don't think. You THINK you think...I think." Folks forget, or don't know, that there are TWO great bridges across San Francisco Bay. In this film, one can see a great shot of the (still under construction) Bay Bridge in the first ten minutes. You can tell that it is NOT The Golden Gate Bridge because of Treasure Island in the middle of the bay. The Golden Gate was completed in 1933 while the Bay Bridge opened to traffic in 1936. This wonderfully clean and crisp print made me a subscriber, especially since I had never seen it before. It's one of the most complex CC movies I have seen.
The Bay Bridge came partly from an idea by Emperor Norton and should bear his name.
Trivia::the color of the Golden Gate Bridge is called "" International Orange"".

Whenever the lights go dim in a Charley Chan movie someone dies. But there's some seriously good shots in this movie.

Film from 1936. He looks so youthful. Miss both Warner and Sidney - both were wonderful as Charlie.

Theres a calmness in watching these old movies. It keeps your interest without making you nervous . Films today can't seem to capture the flavor of older movies.
That's exactly why I love them too. They're fun, but soothing in some strange way; for me, Warner Oland is just the best. I wish I could have met him. He was a really fascinating person who unfortunately developed alcoholism and died while they were making "Charlie Chan in Monte Carlo" or right after it. One of my favorite early horror movies also includes Mr. Oland: Henry Hull's "Werewolf of London." They're both such gems.
I always watch a classic mystery movie or listen to the classic radio mysteries( there are great ones on here) when I need to be soothed it makes me feel safe and comfy cozy like none of the newer shows or movies can this one is no exception. Thank you for the upload

New ones are selling something that's empty from the outside, but these old ones improved the person on the inside.....humor, values, relationships are consistent. The calmness is great. Unlike today not everyone in the old movies are know it alls

Used to watch wgn down in Kentucky , and we only had 3 local channels out of Nashville , but could get a channel from Chicago.
Such an extraordinary movie, with a suspense in all the strings of the web, as Charley Chan would say. He's a great actor, and I would've loved to visit that quirky house! By day 😁
I love the early Charlie Chan movies with Oland and Keye Luke. They were more serious in style than the later series with Toler. Luke as #1 son Lee, was shown to be smart, helpful, there was light humor but not slapstick. In the Toler series, his sons were shown more as fools, with more foolish sidekicks. Willie Best and Mantan Moreland were fine comedic actors, but very underrated. Victor Sen Young was OK as son Jimmy, but Benson Fong as son Tommy was the worst. Best and Moreland were added to the series to attract the African-American audience, with great success.
Toler was a great Chan, different from Oland. Warner Oland had a gentle controlled elegance, while Toler had a more blue collar, common demeanor.
All were very entertaining films. Wish there were 100 more.

Years ago, 1967-68, in sunny Ventura, CA, they would show Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes on Sunday afternoons.
That was so fun. Brings back great memories of watching Charlie with my family.

I saw this movie many many moons ago, but didn't realize it until it was about half way through. I couldn't remember who the guilty person was nor any details or why they did it. So I watched it clear through to end and was not dissapointed.

@@drusilladelp5162 Sadly, that was the unsafe reality of automobiles in those days. When the other car crashed into the one he was in, his car door didn't hold shut, and he fell out and died. I love old cars, but let's not over-romanticize them. They _were_ unsafe in many ways, such as: solid steering columns, steel dashboards, and doors that opened in collisions.

Charlie Chan was the best of the best, when it came to his movies. Miss these type of movies and I wish they could be still be showing on regular television again.
Forget about that downloading and that streaming and stuff, give us television the way it used to be back then fun and enjoyable, oh yeah relaxing too

This is so good like my 20th time. So sad Allen was killed & wait till you see how he catches the culprit. It will make your hair stand. Another brilliant work by Charlie Chan & writer Is it Earl Digger Biggs? Just genius their minds how they connect all the pieces. I love them all & Keye Luke is my favorite. The circus with all his 12 children, love the boy when they're packing for Arizona. He has his little robe on h says "daddy here's your shoes". The cutest voice & child. A little button want to eat him up. Circus is a goodie. Great ending. Thank you, your humble servant , francis

I like both actors Sidney Toler and Warner Oland portrayal of Charlie Chan however, I prefer Sidney Toler for the reason of the comedy and lightheartedness.. ....................... ................... also love No. 1, No. 2 son he cracks me up... Pop! Pop! Poppp!!! ... lol
As good as Oland is, Toler's version is closer to the original in the Biggers stories.

I love how the main detective at the end, orders the scam duo to 'leave town'. Wow- so easy to show the criminals the door, and tell them basically to count their blessings- and that's a warning, next time, lock them up. Simple.

I love the shot of the Golden Gate Bridge under construction when Charlie was flying into San Francisco.
That's the incomplete Bay Bridge that opened in 1936. The Golden Gate was already completed. (The best way to tell is the island (Treasure Island) in the middle that will support part of the bridge. the Golden Gate has only two towers that hold the cables that support the roadway.)

@@roydean1137 I got a little dyslexic. The Bay Bridge actually opened on November 12, 1936, didn't it? The movie has a copyright of 1935, so it may not have been released until '36.

to all the comments below that refer to 2 Chans---there were 3 Roland Winters was the last after Toler and I believe he actually appeared in 6 or 7 Chan films. I'm too lazy to actually look it up now. Speaking personally he was my least favorite---a dour, sarcastic Chan.
I don't think I've ever seen a Roland Winters playing a Charlie Chan movie. I don't know what he looks like.
As for the 1930 - 1949 series, Warner Oland was in 16 Charlie Chan movies (movies 1, 3, 4, and 5 are lost.)
Sidney Toler was in 22.

Great! All the mystery of a good old Charlie Chan b+w movie with a damn good surprise ending. I prefer this Chan (Warner Oland) to Sidney Toler. This guy is more serious. Toler's movies had too much buffoonery in them for me.
I completely agree!!! Werner seemed much more pleasant and agreeable. Whereas Toler had too much arrogance.

The 'buffoonery' came from the presence of Mantan Moreland, as 'Birmingham Brown'. Moreland was great in his own element, but a Charlie Chan movie was too far a stretch.
Toler had more of a no-nonsense approach, and was more in tune with the real world. Oland was fine, but in a 1930's sense.
Sidney Toler movies the best followed by Warner Oland. Charlie Chan's Secret with Oland his best. Who would guess Oland was Swedish?
Nothing like 30s & 40s cinema , everything from artist to settings plot etc.. was so fresh , 50s thru present have been just replicas, thanks Charlie 😊👌👌🐈⬛🐈⬛

Yep, the Bay Bridge with it's brief stopover on Treasure Island. I got a flat tire one time and had to pull off the bay bridge onto treasure island to fix it. Kept expecting to get booted but no one bothered me. A week or so later the 1989 loma prieta earthquake happened with all the resulting bay bridge kerfuffle (not even close to as bad as the Nimitz freeway kerfuffle which, now that I think about it I was also on after fixing my flat tire), but I was home watching the world series ;-) for all of 3 minutes. Serious rock and roll, still have a scar on my forehead to prove it when furniture started flying! I remember when they finally finished fixing the bay bridge, and they put some kind of tree or monument meant to be good luck on it. It can't be seen except perhaps by news helicopters, but the engineers and construction workers and most of us around at the time felt better for any tiny iota of luck we could summon....

They NEVER do in the movies when they have servants. I've noticed they're treated as possessions, like they weren't even there. For example, when they remove their coats/hats/gloves they just toss them to the servants without even glancing their way-no matter WHAT race they are.

It's no wonder you RARELY see her in his films (CC at the Circus was one and then I remember her when they were waiting on the birth of a grandchild), she very rarely was in a vertical position!

Captain orders take off after duke is up. They brought him up otherwise diver and weighty equipment would have been lost. Too very precious, necessary and expensive to lose. Not every sailor could dive, could survive in such bulky equipment.

My word ! How often have I seen every CC feature and their weird mixed racial politics (Chan has an beautiful knowledge but he is merely a glorified wise guy in the last result). Anyway, I always enjoy them hugely--constantly, reminding myself they a type of historical document and comment on that time. Watching in secret so mum's the word.

+Gilda Marlowe The Chan character is based on a real life rough and tumble and very effective Honolulu detective. The movies did not and do not do him credit. I did say I have enjoyed the movies for what they are, historical documents when viewed with two eyes fully open.
