I have the lifelong memorable experience at age 13 (1967) of seing Wilson at Hobart College..from the front of the stage. wearing a lavender tuxedo, he was all of this and more...I don't believe his feet touched the ground once!!! 2 guitars, bass, Hammond, Baritone and tenor saxes, trumpets and trombone. He OPENED the show (Paul Butterfield Blues Band had to follow!) Pickett mopped the floor...especially with Land Of A Thousand Dances at the end...each frontline musician dropped to one knee at the BA-BA part until they got to the end of the line when the goateed, greasy-haired b&w Telecaster blaster lead guitarist let loose that sacred twang out front...I swear neither of their feet touched the ground!!!! the lights came up and people were literally STUNNED! (BTW BUTTERFIELD WAS GOOD TOO!)
What else would you want! The soul music was better than most of the disco music, and the disco music was better the rap and hip-hop music. I cannot become well-adjusted to the new stuff just because they are there.
Got to see him later in life in Reno, Nv. What a hoot!! Great show!! Let my old Lady up on stage to do the go go dance thing at the end and was kind enough to do a meet and greet photo op w/her too!! Waas her very first concert!! Rock on!!
Who doesn't love Picket, who?! He has been one of the best giants of R&B, soul & rock'n'roll singer the then & for ever! Wilson not only gorgeous sang but equal super wrote songs. Splendid artist, admirable person.
I mean if you check out the Temptations best lead vocalist, David Ruffin, and even Dennis Evans same/same... I don't think they had to smooth their voices for motown. That being said, this is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. BUT... Come on man, don't diss Motown for southern fried Wilson Pickett. I mean... Otis voice was smooth at times and "cornbread" as you put it when he had too. So...... Just saying.
It was ALL SOUL in my childhood. These artists didn't compete. There was room for all. I'm grateful for the Rolling Stones and the Blues Brothers too. Those of us old enough remember the original artists doing their thing. I hope it lives in forever regardless of who sings it if they do it right....SOUL MUSIC FOREVER...
This performance is absolutely electric, and it's just Wicked Wilson Pickett's voice/his band on display. He didn't need elaborate costumes, pyrotechnics, a team of backup dancers, a stage design, crazy antics or anything that Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, or any other pop performer uses today. Just knock-out talent is all. That's why he'll be remembered forever.
Cody B come on now. You’re describing James Brown. These other current acts are derived from him. No one today tries to move a live audience like Pickett, Brown or Burke. Or Mimms, or Conley, or Wilson, or Cooke. It’s great to hear this, but nothing even close to being there. Talent, showmanship, talent, they all had it.
To the casual fan, James Brown was everything during this period. To many, however, there were others equally deserving of attention. The music machine was under near total control of what got through to the larger white audience. Mr. Pickett forced his way onto this scene. You could sense why if you ever went to a dance where live bands covered what was new, what worked. God almighty, Wilson Pickett worked. In this cover, he acknowledges Solomon Burke, another giant. Pickett had a sense of what made people get up and dance. An absolute monster, live and on record. 1,2, or3 chord songs created frenzy wherever he played. Killer performances for years. This was not music for 13 year olds. He was driven by his art and by his devotion. What percent of his effort was good enough to satisfy him? 99 1/2 wouldn’t do.
Because of my love of Wilson Pickett paired with my lack of sleep and coffee overdoes, you cannot even comprehend how intensely happy this song makes me right now!! :D
Yes yes yes, now THIS is the kinda music i like and keep always returning to. This gives me joy, pleasure, energy. Just need it like an addict needs his shot. Just love it like my own mother.
On this day in 1967 {January 31st} Wilson Pickett performed his covered version of "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" on the ABC-TV week-day afternoon program 'Where The Action Is'... At the time his version was in its first week on Billboard's hot Top 100 chart at position #77; a little under five weeks later on March 5th it would peak at #29 {for 1 week}, the following week it fell 20 positions to #49 and that was it seventh and last week on the Top 100... Between 1963 and 1973 he had thirty eight Top 100 records; two made the Top 10, "Land of 1,000 Dances" {#6 in 1966} and "Funky Broadway" {#8 in 1967}... But on Billboard's R&B Singles chart he fared much better, he had forty eight hits; nineteen made the Top 10 with five reaching #1... The 'Wicked' Pickett passed away on January 19th, 2006 at the age of 64... May he R.I.P.
The late Jerry Wexler, who produced Pickett for a time on Atlantic Records, said that one of the things that impressed him about the Wicked One is that when most soul singers scream, they're just screaming unmusically and not on pitch. Wexler called it "over-souling"... he even invented his own term for it. But when Pickett let loose, it was always musical and right in tune. The guy was just a dynamo, pure energy on stage and in the studio. Just glad they ran the tape machines, because the music was just busting out of him. It seems like if he couldn't get famous singing, he'd still be doing in some church or some corner somewhere... just had to do it. That's how strong his drive was....
einer der besten Säng er der Welt wie Elvis Presley, man merkt den Spass auf der Bühne und den Blues der in ihm steckt. Solche Säng er kann und wird es NIE mehr geben in Zeiten wie Popstars und DsDs
I remember my friends and I going to see all of these greats at Murray the K's shows at the Brooklyn Fox Theater back in the 1960's! The greatest musical artists performed in those shows and Wilson Pickett was one of them!
THIS is the way to open a concert !! The Stones used to open with it in 1964. They should do so again. So should EVERYBODY -- even the New York Philharmonic !!
The majority of concerts I attended were from the mid 70's to the mid 90's. Wish I had been old enough to go see Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson and Booker T. & The MG's. Eddie Murphy should portray Wilson Pickett. From one wicked performer to another.
That was special , Wilson Pickett may have been the most humble Greatest Soul singer in the world , but he had to give the guitar player walking stage ' I'm the Mofo .... that signs the check " look
Enjoy the freedom that we have to choose from so many genres of music. Hating on any sort of genre of music does nothing positive. Let everyone create what they want to create, and enjoy what you want to enjoy.
He had em goin' at the end. Dig the hell outta the girls dancing. Pickett, one of a kind and will never be matched in my opinion. I can't help but move to his music. No gimmicks, just the pure power rock and soul baby! Bands today should take a lesson.
in those good old days you had to know how to play, gigs were often only twenty minutes on bills with loads of others , and no soundchecks, so you had to be on your toes, an this band is
How could ANYONE not love this man's music? His passing was a national loss.
Did Wilson Pickett die??
@@captainkeyboard1007 Yeah in the 2000's
@@kylelewis9770 Oh, no!! Anyway, this world will not last forever. Thank you for taking your time out to tap or type to me.
FANTASTIC!!!! Wilson Pickett was on fire!

oh man i hope i can find footage of this somewhere
Had the good fortune to hear him live, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. His band was excellent.
You don't see this kind of enthusiasm anymore. You can tell he's having a alot of fun and that gets everyone else excited.
The song is actually titled Everybody needs Somebody to Love
This was a praise song for me when i was a kid... Just sang the chorus to Jesus. Had no Church and no clue... Just a Bible and a fair mind.
Always on fire. A force of nature that moved people's body and made the soul dance. Category 5 smile and energy.
this is the most insane thing ive ever seen. How RAW is that!!!!!!?!?!?!?
Wilson was bad ass dude....
Hats off to the cameraman who filmed this amazing concert!!
Wilson was the paramount soul singer of all time, bar none.
Just sick , very few Singers had what WILSON PICKETT had ... Singing capability , screams , that million dollar smile and Charisma .
I heard that! Can you you imagine, now they got Drake or some other baseball cap clown, shuffling around mumbling and talking, and that's 'evolution'.
What nobody ever says is what a handsome man Wilson was . I'm straight, and I'm saying it . Are we all ugly to y'all, white folks?!!!!
Yeeeessss!!
What else would you want! The soul music was better than most of the disco music, and the disco music was better the rap and hip-hop music. I cannot become well-adjusted to the new stuff just because they are there.
SEE,KIDS?THIS IS HOW A REAL MAN ROCKS A MIKE! ALL HAIL THE WICKED PICKETT!!!!!

peak of soulmusic
NOW THIS ROCKS WITH SOUL..
Wilson Pickett true cornbread soul voice. Never cleaned it up for the cross-over sound of Motown. One of the GREAT voices!
yes! this is a man and HIS OWN music, straght from his heart and soul.
I mean if you check out the Temptations best lead vocalist, David Ruffin, and even Dennis Evans same/same... I don't think they had to smooth their voices for motown. The man was incredible - blew the Brits away and helped inspire the British Invasion.
Heard Wilson in 1966 - still love his music.Fantastic.
true story I bought his cassette thinking it said Gary Pucket and the Union Gap not Wilson Picket
best mistake of my life

And that's precisely the way it is! Well said. Music from a golden era that sends shivers of pleasure and exitement through the universe,
yeah these days the spectacle is so far removed from the music
This is music that LIVES! The garbage they put out today is made by robots and it kills the SOUL!
Steven Yourke This man speaks the truth.

Could you imagine him,Otis and Sam and Dave on the same bill? What a show!
His band was Midnight Movers, love their choreography.
what AMAZING TALENT wilson shares! the musicians are spectacular too.
i just love the raw sound and power of this song....wide open bass drum, no felt or mufflers...perfect!
Nobody had a voice like the wickett pickett. And very few had that much soul.
you just gotta love it..................such energy into ALL his TUNES
