      Good to hear, best advice I can give any new apprentice is try to learn as much as you can, a journyman told me first year that a good apprentice is always trying to think ahead to what a journey man will need and having it before he asks for it, that was solid advice, also take advantage of open welding at the training center, if you weld you will make more money as an apprentice we pay for the training center and the rod for a reason, so it can be used lol, good luck brother, I can say for myself I definitely feel blessed to be a 539 pipefitter 💪🏽

    What's the journeyman rate? It's awesome your local starts at 60% I applied at 636 in Detroit and it starts at something like 30% which isn't livable ($16ish/hr) so I moved to WI and started at $24ish/hr

    • @stirlingheaton8205
      @stirlingheaton8205  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think journyman rate is at 54 an hour right now, honestly not sure we have another allocation meeting comming up in may so we will go up another 3 bucks and depending what we put that on we did most of it to the check last year and like 1 dollar to health and welfare and 50 cents to the training fund, so what we make now is more then the breakdown sheet I had as a first year, I’ll be a 3rd year in June and get a raise as well right now as a second year getting 3rd year pay as a welder I’m getting 40 an hour, so I’m excited for June for another big raise💪🏽 love my career

    • @Aaron-kj8dv
      @Aaron-kj8dv 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Got a message back from my local union last month looking into jumping over after two years of residential hvac.. only 20 years old any opinions on what to do

    • @stirlingheaton8205
      @stirlingheaton8205  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Are you planning on staying in service or getting into construction? In my local those are separate, usually service needs a year of hvac school to get in, since you have experience you might be able to organize in at a higher apprentice year, that’s better money but you will be playing catch up, eather way your young enough to be good eather way, even if you take a little pay cut it will be more in the long run and with Benifits and pension, you will be set for life, my opinion is definitely stay in touch with the union hall, every local has a different contract and pay, some better then others but there is always going to be work and training on more things, stick with it💪🏽

    • @anthony3953
      @anthony3953 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@stirlingheaton8205thanks allot for the advice I definitely want to have a spot in the union wether it be one of the two like you mentioned. Does the money from the bottom portion of the sheet (your “benefits” if you will) go into your regular paycheck/ take home or is that put into a fund for retirement.

    • @stirlingheaton8205
      @stirlingheaton8205  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So the money on the bottom is non taxable fringe Benifits, so like at a non union job they take money out of your check for dental, healthcare, 401k, with the Union that money is not taken out of your check, it’s in the working contract that the contractor pays that in full, so that’s how much they pay per hour for your Benifits, so they pay the things you used to and it’s non taxable so in theory your not getting taxed at as high of an income, every union has different Benifits though depending on the contract they have negotiated, my local probably has one of the best contracts in the nation, we have pyramiding Benifits so if I work over time or double time, my Benifits are also paying out at the same rate as pay, so double time is double time on my pension as well, and the pension is really the biggest win, what you get in your pension will take care of you until you die after retirement, and also your wife or kids after you die, stuff you don’t think about when your young, but man that’s a relief knowing you hit the lotto when you retire lol

      lol my bad I just woke up thought I read how many years do you do, so I believe it’s 1000 hours of work and 1000 hours of class per year to advance, usually those are easy numbers to hit every year though, it’s the testing each year and the license tests which are really what you have to focus on

      So I right now I’m a second year apprentice but I’m getting paid welders pay after passing a wedding test so for that I get paid 3rd year wages, that’s 40 an hour on the check, then all my pension, Benifits ect.. that is all paid by the contractor, so it doesn’t come out of my check it’s a non taxable fringe benifit, so unlike a non union job where you pay out of your check, we have it in our contract that it is fully covered by our contractor, hope that answers your question
