I've been an electrician for 5 years and I've lost my job several times its the nature of the job that when a project ends most of the workers are laid off. Some Construction projects last a few weeks others last 2 years the average is probably 4 to 6 months. The great thing about a union is you don't have to write resumes, apply to jobs and interview. The union finds work for you and in most cases you can have another job within a few days a week or two at most. During recessions you might be out of work for months, I survive these times by saving alittle during the good times and not letting my bills get way above the unemployment I'd receive. The Union pays you're health insurance for a while so losing you're insurance isn't an issue until you have been out of work for more than 5 months. Being on strike is a lot worse than losing you're job because strike pay is much less than unemployment. Fortunately my local has only struck once in the last 50 years. If you do go on strike be sure to stand on the picket line the more people picket the more jobs get shut down and the sooner the strike ends.
I worked in 13 States and 1 US Territory in the IBEW. If you were willing to travel back before the Idiots including Bill Clinton who passed Bad Trade deals. Holy shit. That is really ironic but that is truly devastating. Would be good to go on unemployment but hopefully you're not laid off for too long and can go back to the union once they get more work.
The union of today is not what it once was. I am 65 and just retired after 45 years in the IBEW. My father was an IBEW member If I were starting over, I would start nonunion. They can do anything union electricians can do (for the last 20 years) except you don’t have to pay union dues (even when there is no work) There are a few relatives I suppose of the BA that have steady work but 80% of union electricians do not.
I got laid off fifteen times in the near five years I was in an apprenticeship. The school president asked me where I belonged and I said where ever you send me. The next job they sent me to was the one I busted my back moving that rmc around for a foreman that made more problems for people than getting anything done. Even the other foreman on the job didn't want anything to do with him. A NECA rep at the review board tells me they have enough guys with back injuries already. What do you want from me? I showed up, did my job as instructed. Still draining inflammation out of my spine daily. I thought I would try TH-cam a bit but the injuries have ruined me. So who moves the conduit? Because that was a big argument when I was there. Whether it's apprentices or laborers some journeyman did not think they should shoulder their own conduit beyond the point of installation.

Could you be more specific? Thanks :)
I'm broke every Wednesday
Yea but are you still in the union? Layoffs happen all of the time. Can you be reassigned?
yeah, it wasnt a big deal ☺️
@@DailyElectrician Good. Im a journeyman looking into joining the union. Do you like the Union? If you are out of work are you allowed to take off as long as you want? Do you have any control over where you work?
yeah the union is good! you can take off as long as you want and have full control over where you work ☺️
@@DailyElectrician Thanks for the advice bro! I'm going to check with the local IBEW chapter and talk to them about joining. Down here in Tx the industry is kind of cutthroat and I've had some not so good experiences with the companies and running my own business under a friend's master license. I then talked to a couple of friends who joined the union and they told me that they have treated well. Wish me luck on getting in and enjoy your time off if you plan on taking it! It's good to take a hard earned break after a productive grind!
for sure bro, keep me posted! i wish it to be an easy switching process for you!
What was the reason they gave for firing you?
just lack of work
Does a 10 hour day mean overtime? Or was it like 4 days of 10 hrs a piece?
no overtime, 4 days of 10 hours
Typically it’s anything over 8 is OT but with the Union approval certain job sites the employer can work a 4 10 shift and then anything over 10 would be OT
Do layoffs happen a lot on the union and not working?
Lay offs happen, I've been in the ibew since 2014. At first I was scared to get laid off. But now I cant wait to get laid off and take a vacation lol
haha!
not sure if they are often but i'll keep you posted :)
332!!!!
You should go travel out into the world.
Do you know how many guys are waiting to go out to work on book 1 at the hall in your local?
i do not
@@DailyElectrician It's hard not to take it a little personal the first time you get laid off working out of the local. Just know that it's part of the deal and reflects nothing of your workmanship or ethics or fill in the blank but a lot of times, boils down to luck and timing whether or not they want to bring you on and give you a truck and run work. Sometimes that comes with its own set of issues. Best of luck to you, everything happens for a reason. Enjoy the time off if you're able while you have it. ✌️
yeah for sure, thanks so much! 🙏🏼
How the hell does an experienced electrician lose his job????
Assuming you didn't watch the video at all
Come over to 477 they will take anyone especially CW's 😐😒
You should edit your video. You're saying too much. You dont have to announce you have extra sources of income or that you can get work really fast and wanna take a vacation.
why?
WHAT

right lol
What the Union doesn’t pay paid vacation ?
they do, it's just a different format.
dont the unions find you work?
not that im aware of
@@DailyElectrician Yea man! if you are an apprentice or a JW/Mechanic you should constantly call the hall to see what your spot is on the list. Im IBEW in NY for 10 years. any time i would get laid of id be back to work within a week or 2.
we have over 100 jobs open at the moment. work shortage isnt an issue lol
@@DailyElectrician oh then youll be right out before you know it. goodluck
yeah i got one 3 days later after not looking the first 2 days lol
First time?
for?
First layoff?
probably, only been laid off twice
It's the cost of romex isn't it
lol wut 😂
You work too hard for a young person……. Who is gonna feed your family now ?
Go to the hall and sign the books. Count your blessings if you can get back on a job that quickly. It's not always like that... anywhere. Not even here in Vegas. Get the hours while you can. Unemployment is for bitches.
😂 unemployment is awesome
@@DailyElectrician work while you can, you never know when you won't be able to anylonger. I'd give anything to be able to work again instead of being disabled. Sometimes you don't know what you're missing until you lose it.
that's a fact.
@@DailyElectrician good luck brother - IBEW 357
Thanks, God is good! ❤️🫡
