Silvuddy's Notes:
- Kanto: The original boss music! This theme is used for every Pokémon League official, including Elite Four. The Johto-based games, like the Wild Pokémon and Trainer themes, each include an arrangement of this theme. The remakes in particular heavily expand the arrangement where the GSC version was truncated.
- Johto: This one is quite a bit more intimidating than the Kanto version, especially the HGSS one. Like the originals, this theme is also used for the Elite Four in the Johto storylines.
- Hoenn: This Gym Leader theme is in the camp of more triumphant themes; Kanto meets in the middle of this and Johto in terms of balancing "heroism" and menace. The PWT version in particular is just super fun with it's DnB style drum pattern.
- Sinnoh: This theme actually just repeats the same idea twice, though the second occurrence is ever so slightly altered to keep things interesting. The PWT remix is essentially just an improved version of the original in my opinion, though the BDSP remake version's style is a bit more faithful. The theme when fighting Clan Wardens and Leaders (as well as Commander Kamado) in Legends: Arceus is an arrangement of this theme; maybe the Wardens are the origin of the Gym Leaders we know today!
- Unova: This follows suit with the Hoenn Gym Leader theme of clearly sounding like a fun challenge to overcome, rather than intimidating boss music. There are two versions, one for each pair of Unova games, and each has its own arrangement of a "final round" dynamic music shift.
- Kalos: X and Y went a completely new direction with the Gym Leader music, opting for a subtle electronic track rather than an in-your-face theme like the others. Another fun fact, this theme plays during your battle with AZ after the credits! Korrina also gets her own remix of the track when battling her for the right to Mega Evolution.
- Alola: Sun and Moon do not feature a Gym Challenge, instead having the Island Challenge. While the Totem Pokémon are the true bosses of the challenge, the Kahunas are the officiators, and as such are the ones most comparable to Gym Leaders. The Totem Pokémon theme is also a remix of the Wild Pokémon theme, so I've included it along with the rest of those instead.
- Galar: Sword and Shield introduced constant dynamic changes during Gym battles. There's also a remix which plays when the Gym Leaders are rematched in the Pokémon League Finals as well as the Galarian Star Tournament, also with dynamic changes. Piers gets his own battle theme for his Gym Battle, due to the fact that he also serves as this game's villainous team leader.
- Paldea: Like Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet feature a dynamically changing Gym Leader battle theme, increasing in intensity with every next Pokémon, though no longer in the XY/SwSh EDM style (however, a chant much like SwSh's final round does return). The "Remaining Pokémon" phase applies to any third and/or penultimate Pokémon meaning the "Next Pokémon" phase is skipped if the Leader only has 3 Pokémon.

Everyone hating on Alola stings man, IT’S SO GOOD! It’s just so upbeat and happy! Especially compared to the rest. I just love how it manages to still sound like a tough fight while managing to still keep Alolas’ generally happier vibes.
it's the only one of these where Ichinose had a significant hand in the composition. it has his signature emotive melodies found in his other music. it's easily my favourite of these by far.
I LOVE sun and moon also ultra sun and moon it was one of my first Pokémon games ever completed (also people say it's hard which I kind of is but it's easy having a red flag telling you were to go)
I'm no music expert at all but i love how it sounds more natural than in Gen 5, 6 and 8
Can we just appreciate how BW/BW2 went all out and even had music for last Pokemon AND your Pokemon being at low health?? That's some dedication! And then kudos to the person/people who animated EVERY FREAKING SPRITE in BW2! To give both old and new trainers a fresh sprite is just...Omg, impressive. I am by no means a professional artist, but even as a hobby, I struggle to sometimes make one decent animation for an OC, much less a whole bunch for every trainer and Pokemon there!
I already know the Unova remakes will not be the same, which is so sad, but we can hope they try to add the same heart and soul as they did the OGs!
Literally the ultimate sprite style Pokémon experience
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic YES! The animated sprites were the PINNACLE of the art direction imo.
@@Joetheknight406 As a hobbyist artist, I so wish I could have this amount of passion and dedication to even my own art! xD
Like, I love drawing, don't get me wrong, but whomever did these are a whole other level! I even gave up on making my own game already from coding lessons alone! xD It wasn't going to be Pokemon or a ripoff, but about one of my OCs. Not happening now. :P
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic Definitely. This was honestly the best sendoff we could get for pixel sprited Pokemon games, before the change to 3D. :)
Galar league final theme is such a banger. Really feels like your entire battling journey can and would end there

PWT Johto. Masterpiece.
Started in Gen I (Blue, picked Bulbasaur as my first starter), I'm a "Gen V Best Gen" at heart, but Gen IX's Gym theme quickly became my favorite!
Everyone can agree gen 5 hit different.
Different? Nah, thats probably one of the most pokemon sounding tracks ever. Gen 6 and 8 are more the kind that hit different.
@@Terapagos3000 when it came out ppl said “iT dOnT sOuNd lIkE PoKeMon WhAt iS tHis” 😂
thats probably the worst one here
Just love the fact how Galar's gym leader theme sound very C O M P E T I T I V E
I just love how gamer has the crowd chanting and cheering, really sets the tone for the gigantamax
edit: im leaving in the typo
Man, I sure do love the gamer region
@@StoryGamer11same here. Gamer region really is the best
My favourite person from gamer is definitely Super Marnie-o bros
REAL i would not be surprised if they pulled inspo from crowd chants at UK soccer/football games, it's absolutely wild
X/Y feels so much like Battle Revolution music to me
That's an insult to Battle Revolution music. That soundtrack was fire. Sunset Colosseum had my favourite theme.
XY best pokemon game
@@Xerox_24jajaja wtf no
My top 4 are HGSS Johto, HGSS Kanto, B2W2 Sinnoh and B2W2 Unova Gym Leader in no particular order. They all slap hard and to me perfectly encapsulate all aspects of a Gym Leader battle.
Paldea's electrojazz genre for a gym leader got me by surprise. Easily the most hype song in the series, the chanting I feel is done right in this theme.
The chanting is ok in Galar, but the way it's kinda off-tune, although realistic in context, makes my ears hurt. In Paldea, the way is works with the heavy drums is just, mwah! Absolutely perfect.
Yeah, a lot of people rip on the Paldea Gym Leader theme because it's so different, having a very sparse instrumentation most of the way through as a result of the dynamic changing and all. But I think it's pretty damn cool all things considered, especially the chant in the final round as you mentioned; they definitely improved it over SwSh, which was already a fun concept.
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic yup. I understand that the lack of "seriousness" in Paldea's theme can be a letdown to some, but come on, that whole last part of the song makes the gym battles feel like this massive event, where, whoever the winner may be, fun is everyone's first priority. Can't go wrong with the coral singing once the gym leader's last pokemon faints with that BEAUTIFUL crystal explosion, it's a spectacle, everything is made for you to get absolutely hyped, I love it.
I originally cringed when I heard the SWSH chanting but grew to like how it lines up perfectly with the music
Damn everyone seem to hate the Paldea one here. It's not the best gym leader theme but I personally still enjoyed it
Me too! I think having straight up funky brass music is a fun addition to the soundtrack, but not many others seem to appreciate it...
Better than X and Alola 😭
The main problem is the straight reused cheer part of the song from Galar I think.
Even Gen 2 made Gen 1's tracks seem like a completely different song.
Pladea sounds unfinished. It is like start beat that never gets going (before teh last pokemon when it is over after one hit).
@@Itslewcario X and Alola are amongst the best ones imo
need people to stop arguing about which themes are good and bad and accept that
they're all good actually
i like paldeas gym theme because it makes me think. it makes me choose which pokemon to use or which move to click. its suspenseful to me, making me scared if my plan is going to work or not. (most of these thoughts come from nuzlocking)
Why everone be hating on the kalos theme and then proceed to love on galar? They both give off similar vibes
The Kalos theme walked so Galar’s could run. There’s also the element of the chanting which a lot of people like. For the record though I agree they are similar and both quite good.
There's something about gen 3s sound front which hits home. And I think the remake of gen 4 is a rare example of the music getting better. Only gen 1 does the same.
I love that the Gym Leader music makes you acknowledge that youre in a boss fight
the SW/SH gym music is UNREAL it's my absolute favorite out of all of them, it really gives you the energy of a uk-based sports game where the crowd is having just as much fun as the people competing (mostly bc they're hurling insults at you but it's all in good fun ofc)
UGHHHHH and the music variations in these RIP i LOVE dynamic video game music sm sm sm sm!!!!!!!!
I'm not a genwunner but Like. WHY IS THE MUSIC SO DANG GOOD♡
Because the composer is GOATed
Dude took the Gameboy's audio limitations and decided "Yeah I'll do what Bach did"
@@coruscaregames True lol
I don't know how others feel, but Hoenn (ORAS Version) is the best to me. It's like three different song ideas in one. (Methinks Alola is also good and similar in this regard)
Thanks for the video btw :)
The original gen 3 is better in terms of attention to detail though. I'm still mad they skipped the clapping.
the oras version removed so many instruments it's infuriating
The best are sw/sh and oras songs, that hits so hard (and hisui version too)
Since I see so many others putting their tier lists, I’ll put mine for the main leader themes!
9. Kalos
8. Paldea
7. Galar (Rematch)
6. Alola
5. Sinnoh (B2W2)
4. Hoenn (B2W2)
3. Unova (B2W2)
2. Johto (HGSS)
1. Kanto (HGSS)
Kanto HGSS is soo damn good!
Got the exact same top 5, based list
Why did i now just realise that the fight against Successor Korrina sounds so fucking similar to the walking theme from pokemon go?
I have always thought this, and that actually a lot of Pokémon GO’s soundtrack (at least everything from launch) sounds like tracks from X and Y. I have a theory as to why: the composers probably didn’t want to put a TON of new effort into composing new tracks for the mobile game, so they reused a lot of ideas from their most recent work, which would have been Generation 6 at the time of Go’s release.
I love the Paldea approach
The first pokémon works as a warmup, calm and composed as the battle is just starting
The next Pokémon is when things start heating up, you defeated the first Pokémon, but shouldn't get over yourself
The remaining Pokémon (3rd to 5th) is when the real action starts, the battle is at its peak
The last Pokémon, although similar to SwSh in the chants, aims to evoke more of a BW/B2W2 feeling to it, it's the last Pokémon, one final obstacle from victory in the sheer heat of the battle
if only the battle themselves were harder it'd go really hard
Paldea’s GL theme is a nice change from the EDM of Gen 6 and 8, but the chanting portion for the last Pokémon is too simple and repeats itself far too often in battle. My choice for best theme is X/Y’s Successor Korina theme, not only because of how it improves on the already amazing GL theme, but also because it was the first time we ever used Mega Evolution in battle (I’m praying for its main series return eventually, but at least Masters EX includes it)
Megaevolution is already spammed too much for being tied to zygarde. Keep praying for more bdsps, you might as well directly pray for the end of the series
and also gen 9 gym leader is the absolute worst
@@Terapagos3000 are you ok?

@@Terapagos3000 we find it the guy who absolutely everyone hate
I genuinely think people give B/W way too much credit, it's just pretty average most of the time (with a very few exceptions) in comparison to much of the rest of the series.
Honestly, I agree, the gym leader theme is pretty forgettable to me compared to the others
That’s Gamefreaks fault they pondered Unovas Track to be basic like Gen 1-2 as they wanted Gen 5 to feel like Kanto-Johto again. BW2 is when they realized this and made the music in BW2 Techno & it’s why people favor BW2 over BW1 bc the atmosphere in bw2 felt better. As a Gen 5 fan I only loved Unova for the region, Pokemons, characters, story, content, and battle themes. I hope to God for gen 5 remakes they remix the themes better & give Unova a better less basic sound.
Keep on coping, genwunner
My favorite Gym themes
1) Galar 2) Kalos
3) Unova 4)Sinnoh
I love all of them. My only dislike is Paldea’s being so similar to Galar (the chanting)
You should learn how to appreciate the melody and the progression of the song as you continue to battle
16:01 not surprising that this is the most replayed bit of the video. This version of the johto gym leader theme slaps!
Gen 3 mastered the art of carrying an entire orchestra around
If I had a nickel for every time a Gym Leader is also a leader of an evil team, I had two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Kanto Leader - Legendary
Johto Leader - Chaotic
Hoenn Leader - Stronger
Sinooh/Hisui Leader - Powerfull
Unova Leader (Only BW2) - Experts
Kalos Leader - Based
Alola Kahuna - Friendly
Galar Leader - Unique
Paldea Leader - Different (?)
My rough personal ranking (from least to most favorite):
(Gonna save Piers's theme for team leaders, and the Champion Cup theme for E4)
-Alola
-Hisui
-Unova - Last Pokémon (BW > B2W2)
-Kanto (LGPE > B2W2 PWT > RGBY > HGSS > GSC > FRLG)
-Unova (B2W2 > BW)
-Sinnoh (I honestly like all 3 versions in their own different ways)
-Johto (HGSS > B2W2 PWT > GSC)
-Kalos (both versions are about equal)
-tossup between Galar & Paldea
-Hoenn (ORAS > B2W2 PWT > RSE)
Love detailed lists like this!
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic Thanks. I was originally planning to just say what my personal favorite version of each theme was, but then I decided to take it a step further.
Finally
Another Gen 3er :)
Meine favourite sound themes is first Alola second Paldea and third Black or White.
Alole one is more like be careful and have fun
Are you gonna do the grunts, leaders, and bosses?
Yes! I’ve been really busy with personal work lately so I haven’t had time, but I’ll be getting to every archetype, including Elite Four, Champions, those you listed, and more!
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic does that mean you'll also be doing special trainer classes such as Frontier themes and Battle Chateau?
Edit:I don't even remember if the Battle Chateau themes are different in any way lol
@@Sylv_Ink Yep! Battle Facilities is one of the planned ones I got. Gonna be getting back to it real soon don’t worry!
The Battle Chatelaines get specific battle themes: XY reuses the Elite Four theme, ORAS uses a remix of the Emerald Frontier Brain theme.
alola has my favourite theme :)))
Bulkhead battled Brassius, Optimus battled Katy
Can you do one of all victory themes? I.e all trainer victory, wild battle victory etc
Possibly! Once I get a chance to resume making these types of videos, I’ll be focusing mostly on battle music in the spin off Pokémon games, but eventually I hope to have a compilation for nearly every archetype
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic ok thank you daddy
@@JoblessMusic No problem son
Can we agree piers’s battle theme is the best gym leader battle theme in sword and shield
Edit: also this slaps so hard 1:15:28
I got favorites, of course, but they fall in this order:
1. Unova (B/W Versions - my favorites, and the one theme I can listen to for hours upon hours on end without stopping 'cause it's so awesome)
2. Kanto (most versions minus G/S/C Versions and HG/SS Versions - after all, they're the originals and I first started playing Pokemon back with my copy of Yellow)
3. Johto (all three versions - I loved the fact that you could actually rematch these guys in HG/SS, and started to really like this theme)
4. Paldea (frankly, the only part I truly love about this is the chanting portion, where the Gym Leader uses Terastallization - that hits hard just about every time)
5. Hoenn (R/S/E Versions - heard this one almost too many times as a naive and idiotic kid, simply throwing my Blaziken against everything and getting wiped against Tate&Liza and Wallace especially)
6. Sinnoh (D/P/Pl Versions - love the fact that we can hear these again in BD/SP through the DS Sounds item, and just upbeat altogether)
7. Galar (feels like a dance hall tune, really, which is NOT what I want in a Gym Leader theme, although the remix from VanilluxePavilion is much, much better)
8. Alola Kahunas (not too fond of the theme, usually ignored it when beating the Kahunas)
9. Kalos (the one I like the very least, and not only because I never played X or Y - there's something about them I just don't like; can't pinpoint it, just don't like either of 'em at all)
I really like to think that the Hoenn theme just sound G R A N D
Sword and shield hits the hardest it goes SO FUCKING HARD I CANT EVEN EXPLAIN IT. ITS LIKE THE MUSIC GODS ARE REMOVING SOUL WITH THIS AWSOME BOP
From the first to the seventh generation was the maximum, then the eighth arrives and the inevitable fall to rock bottom begins 😢
Cap. In my opinion cap.
I like from Switch games, since Sword and Shield, but I drawing Transformers Animated since Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

The best thing about pokemon themes at least for me is they evoke nostalgia because of the old bit style of writing. I don't like Oras or new gen 4 compared to their original OST. I think the music loses a lot in the transition to gen 5+
Galar have the best gym theme, period
Mi top 3:
1-Teselia(BW>ó=BW2)
2-Kanto(HGSS>BW2>GSC>FRLG>RBY)
3-Sinnoh(BW2>DPPt)

I like Paldea, Sinnoh, Kanto, Johto and Galar themes of gym leaders
Pokémon Blanco y Negro y Pokémon Negro y Blanco OwO
I honestly prefer how Sword and Shield did their gym theme over Black and White. It’s still good but how Sword and Shield constantly switches helped it seem more real to me. And the final Pokémon theme fitting perfectly with the main loop instead of randomly cutting off to play some random theme fits better into the fight too. A nice smooth transition between phases

B&W2’s remix of the Sinnoh Gym Leaders still slaps hells hard in my opinion. Paldea’s Gym Soundtrack is.. Mediocre since I just legit beat the game.
Ed Sheeran’s Song “Celestials” was the only good part of the entire sound track.
Yeah the b2w2 version is pretty much just improved over the original in every way.
But really nothing from the whole soundtrack hooked you? Not even the Area Zero stuff?
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic I mean the whole Area Zero soundtrack was interesting. The final battle is what took me away actually. The entry to it was just.. Wow. But paradise control and Professor Sada’s battle music made it impossible to play the game with a blurry vision caught by tears.
@@SilvuddyPkmnMusic but when it’s your birthday when you register it… In Pokémon Scarlet.. I woke up to a tearful morning
I think the paldea theme is the only one i dislike (it has good moments though)
Among us
Tier list:
S: Kanto, Johto
A: Kanto (FRLG), Hoenn
B: Sinnoh, Johto (HGSS), Hoenn (RSE)
C: Hisui
D: Unova, Galar
E: Paldea
F: Alola, Kalos
Theyre all amazing except gen 9. However, gen 9's one is still more acceptable than lgpe and bdsp butchered sounds.
Wow, your opinion is just either extremely polarizing or flat out wrong
paldea was a big disappointment to me :(
Agreed. Galar and Paldea's just don't hit that jive that previous generations and Hisui do.

Same here, they tried to pull something akin to trial capitan theme, but they failed hard
Can’t say I agree. Paldea really captures the gym trial feel in its gym theme and does a better job of nostalgia baiting than the gen 1 remakes. One of my favourites honestly.
