Oh the joys of cranking tractors and feeding cattle in the blistering cold and snow. I hope that people that enjoy steaks and hamburgers like i do appreciate what cattle farmers go through. Thanks Ross
Cattle chores are triple the work when it is this cold, my hat gets tipped to you. You are dealing with it very well. That truck has been a god send for you. You deserved that big break.
As a Northern Boy, I would suggest running your truck tires about 5 psi light, especially since you go off-road. It gives you a bit more surface grip, and won't pop the bead when the weather warms up. Also, wearing a free COVID mask helps keep your face warm.
Back in the days when I was milking cows l had to haul manure every day in the winter with a WD45. On below zero days I’d say to myself “no matter how cold it is I can take it for 15-20 minutes” I don’t miss those days. Hope your place thaws out soon.
Over a decade ago there was a article about a cow that looked like it was starving to death. When they did surgery they discovered its stomach was full of net wrap from grinding bales
Went through the same thing today doing chores. Even the gas tractor grunted a little on startup. Only good thing is the spring runs constantly into the water tub in the barnyard and then overflows into an underground drain. Except yesterday when the cows decided it was fun to play with the water line and direct it out of the tub and on the ground. You know, they have to play. We have 10 degrees here in New York now. Just need to get through one more day and then it is supposed to warm up next week. Videos like these show people it isn't always fun on the farm. Stay warm.
Same here in Virginia. Transplant from Newburgh 😆 Looking forward to the upcoming warmer weather. Had issues with my ‘52 8N, fuel related. Got that fixed and finished plowing
Cold always brings out the problems one can have. That's what my dad always told me. I'm 64 and the older I get, the less I like the cold. It is always good to have a way to get out of the cold. When I was younger and we had to work outside, dad always kept something running and warm as an escape from the cold. Stay safe and stay warm. See you later.
Glad we aren't the only ones fighting cold weather. Between a cold house, contrary freeze-proof hydrants, and the other joys of the "Siberian Express" we're surviving in N Central Ohio. LOL Sometimes you wonder if it's worth the fight, but when the warm breezes of Spring are upon us we take on another year of farming adventures. Stay warm, stay safe, don't misplace the jumper cables and aerosol wonder juice. !!!
I've often thought it would be nice if jumper cables were planned into say the battery where you just plug a connector in like a lamp in the house. Easy and "more safer" than janky clamp grippers.
Every video is filled with entertaining sadness. Cant believe you got that truck for so cheap looks like a good rig. Videos might be boring to you but we do enjoy seeing whats involved with a farm.
Just a couple of comments. The videos are much more enjoyable when we don't have to watch the ground or the dashboard of the tractor for 85% of the time. I personally enjoy seeing the other equipment and your farm yard as we walk or ride along with You. From the little I Have Seen, you have a Nice Place. No, it's not all late model equipment, or buildings that are in like new condition. It's a farm like most of us have, well used. I enjoy you taking us along on Your Life's Journey, but I Would like to see a little less ground, grass, dashboard and tractor platform. I'm not generally a complainer, but I just felt compelled to say something. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. After all that, I DO look forward to your next adventure. Stay Safe, God Bless and Thank You.
I don’t know about when it’s run through a grinder but as whole wrap when they eat it it all just sits in that first stomach. We have our butchered here on site so I know it’s in there. I can’t believe it’s very good.
Where have you been ?😁 Thanks for returning to the fold . Missed ya . I’m looking forward to the warmup to . Your gonna have that battery in the truck wore out before winter is over . Buddy doesn’t care how cold it is just so long as your with him . Keep the barley pops cold and don’t play with your organ to much 😂 .See ya next vid .
Oh, the fun of wintertime. When one's cheeks are red and rosy and one's face is also cold. We sent you the cheery weather and this coming week when it supposedly gets up into the 40s it is supposed to rain. We were just downgraded from extreme drought to moderate drought. The cold makes for some great nights of sleeping as we both have to have it in the low 60s to be able to sleep. BTW, my Schumacher battery charger with a built-in brain has a function where it zaps cell sulfation. It has kept several batteries from gracing RK's door. Take care, and look for bulk buying of batteries. Make sure Buddy gets an extra milk bone during the winter. He earns it.
Great video Ross. It's good to show the people that aren't farmers that it does get tough sometimes. Animals got to fed and watered everyday no matter what the weather. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the frozen video! I would not have the patience to film while much sadness ensues. From a John Deere 6400 tractor engine would run but hydraulics and transmission would not budge. Skidsteer would start but left side tires locked up for some reason. At least I had small bales I could feed instead of rounds.
Had trouble with the IH 1066 with a loader on, the hydraulic valve on the right side of the tractor froze and wouldn't move. Got a piece of flexible dryer vent tubing and put it over the exhaust pipe and ran it to the valve. It thawed out in a matter of minutes so just tied it to the frame to keep from freezing.
@@rosstheoliverman I know you don’t like the snow/cold!! Spring is coming!! I just watched your latest video on the JD carburetor. That float is definitely the culprit.
Ross, you need a 3 pt bale spear or fork, carry 2 bales at once, saves you a lot of time. I won't lie, I never used net wrap, never wanted to either. The saddest cold start goes like this, jump, either, jump either, start, sit in truck to let warm, 10 min later open gate with bale, tractor dies in gate because fuel jelled. Cant close gate, cows interseted in bale and coming though gate to eat more bales. Raise unhappy wife to come out into cold, to start the cold start process all over with another tractor to drag the first out of gate.
Farming is hard, cold makes it harder. I was a farmhand in my mid teens in Iowa. We spent all winter just trying to stay warm and keep things thawed out, it wears on a guy. Definitely a young man’s game. I could see maybe grinding twine wrapped bails but net wrap? That’s crazy.
