    In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
    - 223 Remington Winchester Deer Season XP 64 grain Extreme Point
    - CZ 527 Carbine chambered in 223 Remington with an 18.5 inch barrel (safe to fire 5.56x45 per CZ)
    All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
    I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
    While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
    With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
    For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
    Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
    Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
    I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
    My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
    The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
    All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

    Exit holes, for me, are required for hunting. The only exceptions for me are face on, or facing away - which I would not attempt on medium sized game. I would give up a bit of expansion in favor of pass through every time, but still won't use fmj on game.
    Love that your tests are executed at 100 yards.

      223 FMJ is an interesting one. Paul Harrell has a good video showing the effectiveness of 55 gr and 62 gr 5.56 FMJ ammunition. There was a lot more tissue damage than I expected, and other videos showing ballistic gel performance of 223 FMJ show large wound cavities.

    Took a doe tonight. Ran 40 yards and collapsed. 223 ,55 grain ,Winchester Super X pointed soft point. Small hole through the ribs. Golf ball size wound through the lungs. Orange size wound in the liver. Small bullet fragment on ribs opposite side. 100 yard broadside shot. It would have performed even better at 200. Would have held together better with the lower velocity.

    I've had good results from the Winchester 64gr Power Point. It's an ugly bullet, though. I haven't used their factory load. I load my own a few grains below max (IMR-4064 or IMR-4198). So, they're not screaming out of a 20 inch. 🤠

    I have 3 223s for hunting only one is a varmint/ predator style gun. One has a 20" barrel and the others 2 have 24" barrels. Every one I know who hunts with a .223 have between a 20 and 24 inch barrel... I think they might be more common than you think. 😉
    Keep up the great work!

      I understand there are lots of them out there, I also know that the most common .223 chambered rifle sold over the last 15+ years has been 16” barreled ARs by several orders of magnitude, it’s not even close, and in the region of the United States with the most hunters where you can actually use the .223 legally for hunting (south), they are actively used for hunting. The Midwest region does have more hunters by number of license sales, but the .223 isn’t legal for deer hunting in many of those states anyway regardless of barrel length.

      Yeah definitely. In regards to people bent around the axle about the failure in 30-30, i think it bears mentioning and repeating that ballistic tips don’t always mean explosive bullets. It’s about overall bullet construction, i think of the TTSX, CX, Accubond, etc.

    The CZ 527 came with an 18.5" barrel in 223.
    Interestingly, CZ states CIP doesn't differentiate between 223 & 556, so you can shoot both with no problem. 🤠

      Same with the CZ 527 in 7.62X39. The bullets vary in diameter from .308 - .310 depending on where and who made them but they all shoot very well and CZ has no problem with the size difference

    It would be interesting to see what many of the 223 loads tested would do in a target with some deer bones and flesh in it. The bullets are so light and small that some of them may not penetrate well after encountering a leg or shoulder bone. Maybe the all copper bullets would penetrate well enough through bone. Many times I have to shoot a deer facing me or going away from me. Quartering shots happen often and with some of the loads available they may or may not be a wise choice.

    I would love to watch a "Wrap Up" video discussing the top three choices from these videos. Clearly, there are choices with amazing penetration, but they are lacking in the wound cavity size. However, there are bullets which focus on a dramatic wound cavity, but the penetration is lacking. The average penetration in ballistic gelatine is often around 15-17 inches , but how would this compare to penetration across a deers lung cavity? It's possible 15" of gelatine penetration is enough to guarentee an exit wound on a deer, but maybe its not. Clearly, there is plenty of points to discuss which would make this a worthy video.

    Good stuff, im curious how close this is to the Winchester silvertip 64gr ammo. Its what ive been usin the past 3 years and have takin beaver, coyotes and whitetail with it. All have been flawless one shot stops. Ive only had one doe run and she only made it about 40 yards. I also shot her with a 13.7 inch ar, all others have been shot with a 20 inch and they drop on the spot.

    The standard sporter profile barrel length for 223 has always been 22 inches. Varmint profile 24-26 inch. That has been an industry standard for years. 18 inch is on the short side for 223 chambers (not 5.56). Probably giving up 75-100fps with that same load. If loaded to 5.56 specs, it would likely offset the barrel length disadvantage.

    • @masonleather
      @masonleather  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      AR rifles with 16” barrels have outsold every bolt action rifle chambered in .223 combined for over a decade, by orders of magnitude, it’s not even close. There are orders of magnitude more 16” barreled .223/5.56 rifles in common use today than any other barrel length.

    • @prowler10393
      @prowler10393 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @masonleather And why would anyone load 223 spec loads in a 5.56 chamber? That's the point many people are trying to get at. Purely 223 spec chambers have been what I described for 4.5 decades prior to the profileration of MSRs. You give up 100fps by loading 223 spec ammo in a 5.56 chamber. 223 spec ammo should be shot in a 22 inch barrel at a minimum. Open most reloading manuals and 223 sections are all chronographed with 22 inch + barrels.

    From these tests, this is more of a varmint load than deer. Explosive expansion in the first few inches. It might work better at 200+ yards where the lower velocity would cause less expansion and deeper penetration. At closer range, I would not use on medium game like deer and hogs. Thanks for the tests.

    • @NorthRiverGuide
      @NorthRiverGuide 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If you measure the depth of a broadside whitetail, it doesn't take much to pass through. The heavier weight/medium game leadcore 223 options are doing all the damage they need for a humane kill right where it is needed if the hunter is disciplined enough to know where and where not to shoot.

    • @masonleather
      @masonleather  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The overwhelming majority of rifles chambered in .223 being actively used today for any purpose, including hunting, are AR style rifles, the overwhelming majority of which have 16” barrels.
      AR rifles chambered in .223/556 have outsold bolt actions in 223/556 by orders of magnitude for approaching two decades.
      The most popular (by far) bolt action rifle chambered in 223 being sold currently is the Ruger American Ranch, which also has a 16” barrel.
      Hence, there are orders of magnitude more 16-18” barreled .223 rifles in use currently than any other barrel length, it’s not even close.
