I'm gonna deer hunt with my 20" AR this next fall, I've never hunted with an AR so it's nice to have videos out there to help me choose a good bullet for maximum damage.

Did you ever make it out with the 20 inch? I'm late to this comment but wanted to see if you did. I've been usin a 20 inch ar for about 3 years, using Winchester silvertip 64gr ammo and it's been awesome. I've killed beavers, coyotes and whitetail with mine, all have been one shot stops and drops besides one doe that made it about 40 yards before expiring.

Excellent test. I don’t hunt with .223 but my friend’s grandson is small and a .243 doesn’t fit him so I’m offering him my .223 for his first hunt. Looking for good deer bullets and your video helps. Thanks for the great content! 👍

No way! I bought some of this ammo like 5 months ago and couldn’t find any tests on it. Now I just decide to loom it up again for some odd reason since I was checking my ammo storage and saw them and here you are! Thank you so much, man!
Edit: also those are some VERY similar performances, and I got the Hornady for $25 a box and the Winchester for $35 a box.

I've used Hornady 55gr V-max, 55gr Speer Gold Dots, Fiocchi 55gr soft points, and Federal Fusion 60gr soft point. They all work just fine for taking deer.

I’m willing to bet using these two rounds from a 20-22” barrel would give better results as the velocities would be higher and especially with the 22” barrel

  • @TheMrMused

My standard for the decent size deer we have here in upstate NY; 20" 1:8 twist barrel with the 64gr Deer Season XP rounds. They work great. Typically punch out a couple ribs and turn the near-side lung to mush. Last one of the season was 30 minutes before the end, field dressed 140lb doe at 125yds.

If you secure the gel block to the table with a ratchet strap or something,,, the bullet will expand and pass all the way through the gel... when the gel block flies in the air and moves backward it absorbs all the energy..

Use the same aimpoints as you would bowhunting and you will have a dead deer, every time.
62 grain gold dots are another option.

I have shot many deer for depredation reasons. Have used a few calibers and types of bullets including both of these. IF you are an experienced deer killer and good shooter and only shoot under ideal circumstances, these will kill deer. There are far better calibers out there for deer. I will probably use my .223 for them again but not for real hunting in the woods just the depredation thing where it looks like a park. Nor will I ever use it for bigger , amped up bucks during the rut. Bigger calibers than these are better.
