  • 300 Blackout Winchester Deer Season XP 150gr Ballistic Tip ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Ruger American Ranch with 16 inch barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

I put 3 of those into a good 8 point - 160-ish pounds… he went from walking to running.. about 50 yards, another at around 75, then at around 90 yards. 1 in the paunch, 1 in the ribs, the last in the front shoulders.. it broke both shoulders and folded him up! Lawn chair style, full run.. as a side note.. I was batting cleanup for my 12 year old step son… making sure it stayed on the property. I recovered 2 of the 3 bullets, 1 looked like yours in the video, the shoulder shot was mushroomed back much further but was still a good bullet with core intact.. it was a win and I was pleasantly surprised. Now, pushed at 7.62x39 speeds it’ll probably go to pieces… but perfect, inmo, for the 300 BO.. and hit bone with 2 of the 3 shots… 1 broke BOTH shoulder joints.. he was shoveling after he chicken flipped.. 🇺🇸👍🏻

For clarity, in the video I mentioned that this load performed pretty good and that it would be an option for consideration if hunting with the 300 Blackout, what I mean by that is “compared to other 300 Blackout loads” … because by and large there haven’t been any 300 Blackout loads I’ve tested that performed exceptionally in my eyes for hunting purposes, but this load was far from horrible as compared to others I’ve tested thus far. Just FYI. And in full disclosure, I do not view the 300 Blackout as a great (or even good) medium game hunting cartridge. Can it get the job done? Sure. Are there a plethora of better options? Absolutely.

Thanks for the clarification. Unless I missed it, I don't believe you made any comments with regard to the wound cavity created by this ammunition which looked to be pretty substantial and pretty consistent. From my experience hunting deer and hogs at the end of the day what seems to really matter most is how much damage a bullet can do at any point in its travels into and through the animal. My friend has moved exclusively to his 300 Blackout for deer and hog and always keeps his kills within 100 yards and says this bullet simply "knocks'em down dead". He's killed five this season already and hasn't had to trail a single animal. All five shots where perfect lung shots and he only had an exit wound on one animal. I just purchased my first 300 Blackout rifle this season and plan to try this ammo so your review was very helpful. Thanks.

I have not used these, But Winchester makes some extremely under rated rounds.. Some of the best handgun ammo I've shot with best results & knarly wound channels were Winchester. I think it's something about their Hollow point tip design. The US military/LE/MP used a very similar design if not the same for decades. Ranger T and Talon made some ugly wound channels

@@masonoutdoors_masonleather even with today's long range shooting trend, it's still odd to see a 24" barreled rifle in any 308 or 30-06 length caliber. 20" or 22" would make far more sense. I agree.

    • @useruser400
      @useruser400 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That’s a fact. This caliber is specified out of 16” barrels. There is a good reason.
The 300BLK cartridge uses fast-burning pistol powder, not rifle powder. That’s how the designers achieve high bullet velocity out of barrels that are 16” or less.
I handload 110 gr Nosler Varmageddon bullets for my two 300 BLK platforms. The 16” carbine delivers a measured muzzle velocity over 2400 fps. The 10.5” pistol over 2200 fps.
My 16” carbine with that 110 gr bullet has 200 ft-lb more muzzle energy than the 150 gr Winchester tested in this video. My 10.5” pistol matches the energy of the Winchester 150 gr!
I’m not sure why anyone would opt for the heavier bullet in the Winchester ammo, especially if it has such poor expansion characteristics at the slower bullet speed. Ammo like this gives the 300 BLK a bad name.
Moral of the story: Velocity is death. Shoot lighter bullets that actually do what they are supposed when fired from a 300 BLK. That Nosler Varmageddon bullet is designed to perform at those aforementioned 300 BLK velocities. It is devastating on feral hogs, retaining 1000 ft-lb of energy out to 140 yds.
I would not hesitate to shoot a buck with it. If it will kill a 180 lb boar, it will kill a buck.
Once you pull the trigger, it is your bullet that conveys your intentions to the target. So pick your ammo wisely.

In my opinion… At impact speeds under 1900 fps, bonded bullets are iffy, requiring so much energy to reliably expand wide enough to matter… solids about the same… bullets that tend to frag at higher speeds tend to fold back pretty well and still throw enough trash to cause secondary damage… Just my observations with years of use with 300 AAC and 7.62x39… like the Speer 125 Hp flat base… that thing is gnarly! Super thin jacket and goes to pieces at 1900 fps… Hornady V-Max 110’s are awesome on broadsides in the ribs… Now… I don’t carry these guns with these rounds due to necessity, it’s purely for enjoyment and I choose my shots wisely.. I have plenty of better choices for “Real” hunting situations.

Basically it makes a 10mm look down right abysmal in every way. Looking better yet? Ammo is literally made from your reloading room scraps.. assuming you handload… if not, I get your point.. but there’s no doubt that a 125 at 2250 fps isn’t a joke… 6:33The jewel of WW2… 30 carbine.. 110 grain fmj at 1900 fps… Not a cannon but it took care of business. People get too hung up on numbers these days… 2400-2500 fps is the sweet spot in my opinion for 90 % of hunting. Perfect expansion form plain bullets, low recoil, and great penetration.. 🇺🇸
