I don't know if you ever looked at 223 wssm but that is a hot pill moving at 4400+ fps with some really impressive ftlbs out at 200-300 yrds . I watched it turn a watermelon to pink mist at 100 yards....I mean there was only a small handful of rind left, the rest turned to atmosphere.
@Kushman420tv I have very little experience with it but I know it tends to burn up barrels unless you use more modern loads...I think solid brass pills don't eat barrels as much as copper jackets , it don't make sense to me but brass must be softer than copper .

AR10 - 243, 308, 7mm-08, 260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmore, basically any of the rounds based on the 308 case, and a couple more.

Both are good I will pick 243 cause it’s more universal for hunting in my state 223 is limited to small game varmits while 243 can be used for big game too 👍🏻
I think the .243 was faster than the .223 because the barrel length on the.243 is quite a bit longer than the .223 barrel. The .243 bullet would definitely have a lot more overall energy than the .223 because of the heavier bullet weight and the almost equivalent velocity between the two projectiles. I really liked this comparison as well as both of these cartridges!! 👍👍

I have a sako 243 Love the gun, it's been a tack driver for 40 years, my Dad got it for my mom in the 70s its one I'm very proud to have along with his 30.06 sako he bought at the same time,
I got a $125.00 Remington 700 Bdl 30.06 which I still use today weaver 4x scope

It really depends on what you are trying to do with the cartridge. The .223 is well suited to smaller varmiting, Prairie Dog to Coyote. The .243 is in another class and has been used to harvest Elk and Deer. I have rifles chambered for both and the .243 is my favorite for Deer. If I need to dispatch a stray dog by our chicken coops though, the .223 is excellent.
243 is the superior round. Even tho its small compared to other rifle carts, its definitely a kill shot bullet.
.243 is legal for Elk in Colorado, though I do not suggest it

Horses for courses, .22cal (223, and it's similar kin) is good for light varmints, but the margin for error gets very small when you go up to bigger game, yes you can 'extend' the potential with careful choice of projectiles, but you are still limited to .22 and the powder capacity behind it. The 243 has projectile size and more cubic capacity behind it, so you can make it spectacular for light varmints (with projectiles like VMax, Ballistic Tip etc.), but still ramp it up with something heavier (like the 100grn here) for bigger stuff. I'll admit that I don't actually own either cal., but I have a 22-250 (223 on steroids), and there is a 243 in my household. My current go to is a 6.5mm Swede, a bit like the 243 in being a good 'all rounder' but with a bit more capacity. If you want speed + weight, try the 300WSM, 180gn factory loads at 3000fps (did some experimenting with mine some time ago and got 130gn up to 3750fps at 'factory pressures' in 23inch bbl (will not give load data info for obvious reasons)
I have a short Mossberg patriot in 243, best trigger on any gun I own, little bitty groups at two hundred long yards. Makes my savage in 7 mm jealous.great video sir .

Ar10 can be chamber in any .308 cal so 7mm-08 243, 308, few other odd balls even 338 federal.
As ar15 223 caliber rifles. You can get the 243wincheater short mag to feed and run if you can find the upper for it. Quit pricey one i seen.

When I was younger 30-06 was my round of choice for deer. As I've gotten older (almost 60) the damn thing was really making my shoulder sore when zeroing it in. So I got a .243 and it's doing the trick and not beating the crap out of my shoulder.

I've had a lot better luck over the years with a 243. I've hunted with both calibers extensively. I've had a couple of messy situations arising from bullet failure with 223. Also, .243 definitely bucks the wind better. Both will get the job done with proper shot placement but 223 is pretty marginal as a deer round IMO.
I've been reloading my .06, .270, and .243 with game kings for many years. They fly true and I get great expansion for deer on them here in Nebraska. Cool video Adam.

Either one would be effective on whitetail with proper bullet placement but if I could choose it'd be the .243. I usually use either .7mm Rem mag or .30-30 Winchester and usually don't have to track far. Thanks WTW.
I love the Weatherby, beautiful rifle and a good caliber. I have a Remington 770 in .243 and I love it. It may not be the idealistic round for deer but it’s effective and that’s what I use it for. Great video!!

I have a 5.56 S&W AR I got 8 years ago. I don’t hunt, but it is fun plinking with it. I’ve also got a Remington 700 mk 13 mod 5 in .300wm and a 1951 marlin in 30-30.
I bought a Ruger bolt action .243 back in 1969 from the Navy Exchange while stationed in Japan. I haven’t been hunting in years and haven’t even fired it in 40 years. Yes the Weatherby 243 has the 24” barrel. I love my MK V Weatherby (also bought while in Japan in 69. It’s a bit bigger at .375 H&H magnum!
The 243 is optimal with the 95 grain pill brother, the 223 really shines with the Barnes triple x bullet in 70 grains. Wet them rolls and reshoot you'll be amazed

@@WHOTEEWHO In Canada you can also hunt with a 243 not with a 223 / 5.56 So it is actually odd its not more adopted and many have won the 1000 M comps with 243 not sure anyone has with the 223/5.56.
Ive ran 243 with 95Grains up to 3400FPS crono'd and they can clover at 200 M which is like 1/4 moa
Smoked several deer with 243 all went almost nowhere and dropped a massive 187# 10 pt with it last year. Its a work horse.

I had a .243 savage axis a few years ago I never was able to get it to hold any kind of group with any different ammo. I seriously had 6-10in groups depending on what brand/type of ammo. I sold that rifle and purchased a Ruger American and its awesome crazy good accuracy. The Savage must have just been a lemon.
I have the 243 win in savage axis and it's simply a tac driver. I did find it didn't like factory ammo at all, now on the other hand I do reload and it loves anything hand loaded. My best shell is a 105 hornady A-max or 103 eld-x. Dropped my antelope last year a touch over 700 yards and it just floored him.

Bought a Savage 110 years ago in 30-30. same thing all over the map. Sold it within a week CHEAP to a guy who came back days later to tell me the barrel nut was loose right out of the box.
Did you check the barrel nut? I like my savage wood stock 250 bucks after 75 dollar rebate.
Just took my 30-06 axis out and it was stacking rounds at 100 yards with Remington soft tips. But not every gun can be created equal in mass production

In this exact order my 5 favorite rifle rounds 6.5 grendel 223/5.56, 243win, 270win 7.62x39 really like the first 4 because of the versatility and low recoil. Like the 7.62x39 because it hits hard for a tiny package but mostly because it’s super cheap to shoot lol. But who am I kidding I like all calibers lol

For varmint gun mine is a Remington 700 in a .243win and the ammo I use is Hornady V-max 58 grain

I have a 243 Bolt action too. It's the perfect deer rile hog rifle and varmit rifle. Not to small not to to small and not to big not to to big - jus in between - PERFECT rifle for all

Love this channel! I used to use a 45-70, but the .243 Winchester won me over when I went to the prairie dog farms in the Dakotas. Man, those dogs can dance!

Prairie doging is where my .223 shines. A Ruger #3 with a 6 to 18 power scope. You don't even have to see to know if you made the hit because of the popping sound. My 6mm I use for coyotes because of longer shots and really pretty fast. Not by 22-250 standards yet very fast.

I like them both. My wife has a 243 savage and its a beast. That little 95 grain bullet never had a deer walk away. And my cousin Guy has one its all he deer hunts with now. Its been like 5 or 6 years and nothing but dead deer when he pulls the trigger. So id say we like that round around here. Who-tee-who

I am still debating with myself about this. But for hunting purposes I am leaning towards the 243 win and for paper punching and home protection the 5.56/223 rem is the way to go. Seeing the fact that I hunt in South Africa I need something with more penetration and bigger wound chanel capabilities I opted for the 308 win. I think this will make a great comparison test between the 243 and 308 I know it is chalk and cheese but there is always the arguments around this point.

6mm is a .244. I shot one for years, it’s a good caliber but a wildcat round these days. ✌️

6mm is possibly a little better with longer neck- most of my .243 brass is necked down & reamed from cheap surplus .308.
The 6mm remington has a 1-12" twist. It can't stabilize a 100 grain bullet. That is why the 243 win took off & 6mm remington peadered out.
The .243 is a great cartridge. I've got Rem 700 chambered to it and have killed everything from prairie dogs to elk with it. It will keep you fed.

.243 far superior round WTW and very versatile, 55 Grain to 100 Grain, small game, varmints up deer sized game, but you already know that. I'm thinking of getting the Ruger American with the Vortex scope in .243 Winchester.

I use my single shot Encore Pro Hunter with the .243 Hornady Precision Hunter 95gr. and it is as accurate as my handloads. Every deer I've shot with it has dropped in it's tracks. It's almost my go to hunt'n rifle.
I like the 243. My first deer rifle was a winchester 88 in 243. Miss that gun it got stolen a few years ago.

Don’t judge me, but I just bought a new Winchester model 1886 chambered for 45-70 for this year’s big game season. I’m looking forward to varmint shooting with my new weapon come spring. Cost of ammo is still affordable in Minnesota, USA.
That was a interesting video and the 243 is for different application it's more of a hunting round and a 223 is more for varmints and shooting steel and just plane pleaking around I prefer the 223 especially just for having fun and general shooting.

Used it last fall in Wyoming to antelope hunt. Did its job just fine.
In my opinion the 556X45 was developed to extend the Vietnam war. The thinking to sell the round was wound one man take 3 out of the fight. 2 to care for the wounded. Its a varmint cartridge at best. I'm not a .223 hater I own 2 ARs in 556X45 /223. I'll mention choosing the 556 was about the weight of the rounds to carry.

Took a small doe this past season with a Tikka T3X in .243 Win and a 100 gr Sierra Pro Hunter @ 2950 fps. Hit her behind the shoulder @about 100 yes and she did one hell of a cartwheel about 6 foot high!!!! She did her death spiral and expired 20 yes after the shot. Never had that happen before, but every animal is different. 😉
Aye I got a weatherby 270 magnum mark V that I use for blacktail deer hunting! I love it but the steel rusts on the barrel pretty fast in my safe. I probably just have a bad safe lol
I know the answer cause I own both and have reloaded and shot a ton. 223 prints smaller groups as a rule, but 243 shoots accurately as well. 243 does a far better job bucking wind. If your shooting over 200 yards it becomes quite obvious. Both are good calibers. I’ve always looked at my gun cabinet as a Golfers Bag. Each gun for different jobs.
Do people really hunt deer w 223? I have one but I think it would take a really precise head shot. I looked at your videosmto see if you had a water jug or gel video of 223. How is the soft point expansion. Cleared that TP like pulling out that quick tablecloth trick.
I have used 223 on 6 white tail deer using federal fusion 62 grain. I kept my shots within 150 yards and took either neck shots or front shoulder shots. Every deer i hit dropped in its tracks with a single shot. Legal in my area, not saying there are far better calibers to use but thats what i have.
the .243 60-65gr and 55gr 5.56 is the better comparison for plinking and small game. I like the .243 85gr for long range varmints/coyotes and 100 gr btsp for deer (far better than 5.56 in wind).
Should have used a 75 gr. in the .243 @ 3361fps if you wanted to destroy the toilet paper roll. Not a fair comparison using a 50 gr. In the 223.

The first rifle I hunted deer with was a Savage 99 in .243 It’s a sweet round.
You need to do this review again, but after soaking the TP rolls in water. No need to crush them flat, first. If they don't completely disintegrate on impact, we can see the sizes of the half-way through holes in the cardboard cores. You may also want to set up a second camera at 20 or 30 feet from the TP to catch the big White Cloud (pun intended) when the impacts happen.
243 all day long, made a 750 yard shot with a Savage 10ss on a 3/4 inch steel plate and drilled straight through it exactly where I aimed it..on top of that, I have seen 1500 yard shots made with it, and no way a 223 could ever reach that..

.243 is a very versatile round. I hand load that Sierra GameKing bullet in 85 gr. It's a trick bullet for varmints. They are there one minute, gone the next! No abracadabra needed. Just an accurate rifle with a good clean hit.💥😂🤣

.243 all the way. Got rid of my 5.56/.223 for a .357 mag lever gun. Might buy a Mossberg 930 next. But I am just not a fan of 5.56/.223 maybe it was just the mini 14 I didn’t like. But that Weatherby is hotttt

I just ♥♥♥♥♥ that shiny good ol' rifle and the .243 _IS_ my spirit animal when it comes to rifles (or, more precisely: rifle calibers). What's not to love? I know, I know. It won't do you much good when hunting elephants, mad bulls, hippos, or north korean armoured vehicles, but up until that? I reckon' it gets the job done.
And just for the fun of it, how about shooting wet roles of TP next time? Could be super fun (or mindblowingly unimpressive, I have no idea).
Weird that the military never tested 243 it over 7 years older so it was around when they were looking for a new cartridge and it's made from the cartridge they were already using, its far more powerful then 223 and would likely fix the stopping power problems especially down range, guess the point is mute now since they are moving towards 6.8mm now which is pretty much 270 just wonder though how would things be different if they did choose 243 as the AR round
This comment is void man. They don't want stopping power. The 223 is the perfect round, it's limited recoil helps with accuracy, the ammo is lighter to carry than most rounds, and the. Round is enough to wound someone without killing them this taking two people out of the fight as they won't leave their wounded men behind, think about it
The (.243 Winchester) is a great round but the (.243 Winchester) in an AR-10/LR-308 platform would be nearly 10 lbs heavier than any similarly accessorized AR-15 calibered rifle. The military is all about High-Speed and Low drag. They already have LR-308s/SR-25s actually chambered in (.308 Winchester). The time to advocate for (.243 Winchester) chamberings to 'save weight' would have been when the M14 was standard issue.
Logistics. While .243 is a better round, .223 is cheaper, lighter and easier to teach a Soldier to shoot with. They've been talking about replacing 5.56 NATO for a long time.
@@briant7652 as I said above the other factor for using a 223 is for maiming, if you wound an enemy he needs his fellow soldier to assist him, this taking 2 enemies out if the fight, a dual purpose
@@ruger51995 the people we fight don't give a shit about their wounded. A wounded US soldier could tie down his squad. The bullet works fine with placement and/or multiple shots. CAS, artillery & machine gunners get most of the kills.

The .243 is without a doubt the more versatile round. With 100 grain bullets its much better deer, pronghorn and even black bear round. And with the lighter varmint bullets it will easily reach out and touch em!

I have a Ruger American in .243 Synthetic and Stainless Steel with a long barrel (not sure if it is 24 inches, but gotta be close). .243 is a great hunting caliber. 5.56 and.223 ammo is about half the price, so I might get one of those. I expect that you can get a semi automatic in .243 if you order it, but I haven't seen any at the Firearms store, might almost be more apt to find 6.5 Creedmoor in semi auto. Dumb question, which would you rather have. 17 HMR or .22LR for small critters and why?
I use a 243 with 100 gr Hornady’s and the amount of damage it does is such I cannot chance hitting muscle tissue or bone. I always go for the vitals or wait for the next chance.
who, Paul, if i say something here that contradicts something you say please dont think of it as i'm challenging you on something it's more like i'm counting on you to correct me and learn from you. that said from what i see in a semi auto such as an ar part of the power from each round seems to be diverted to cycle the action which could have resulted in the 223 having a lower chrono reading than the bolt action 243. it would be interesting to see the chrono results in a video where you have 4 rifles, an ar and bolt action in both calibers. as it stands now the 243 looks to be a full step ahead of the 223 in every way
I have run both my .223 and .244 or 6mm through my chrono. The .223 will not meet book velocities because the loads have to be to compressed using a 55 gr. bullet whereas my 6mm will push a bullet that is twice the weight of the .223 about 300 fps faster and have more room in the case if I wish to produce a full powder load.
