    Hey John. I just noticed today a sale on the MSI Suprim X at Canada Computers. It's now only 50 dollars more than a Gigabyte Gaming OC and the same price as the Zotac Amp Extreme Airo. After all of these card reviews do you think this may be the card to get especially on sale?

    • @JohnLCharette

      Good morning John! Wow, you are right. $200 coupon off the Suprim X Liquid, $100 off the Suprim X, and there are a few open-box solutions. It's a gamble with open boxes because they were probably returned due to coil whine. Yeah, if you were on the fence, this makes the Suprim way more affordable than the Strix.

    Great review John, I am a little late to the RTX 4090 party but have recently decided to treat myself to one of these cards.
    I have been thinking of purchasing either the MSI Gaming X one, Suprim X or the ASUS TUF. I hear those three are very good and quiet. My question here would be, which of these would you recommend for someone who values noise above else? I don't mind coil whine so much as it's one of those lottery things but when it comes to fan noise I would like the least annoying one. I won't consider the MSI Liquid X as I am planning on reselling once the 5090 comes out in the future.
    Also, I hear the Gaming X Trio lacks a vapor chamber, would this make any difference?

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Welcome to the 4090 party! ;) Regarding noise, all three cards are similarly designed with three axial fans. Yes, you're right, the Suprim has a vapor chamber which isn't tied directly to noise.. but consider, if the vapor chamber helps reduce thermals, than the fans don't need to spin as hard. So, it would probably be number one, with the TUF card coming 2nd. It's a thick boy card with a huge heatsink, so it'll also be cooler than the Gaming X Trio.
      The best solution for ultra quiet is always water cooled.. but that's a whole different beast. Consider that the TUF is the more popular card to watercool, so if you ever wanted to go that way, there are lots of compatible waterblocks. Hope this helps!

    I have a Suprim X 4090 as well but my Phanteks AMP 1000 came with a dedicated cable to the PSU. 2 8 pin to 12vhpwr which keeps things nice and clean looking in my case. I was also having problems with the stupid Nvidia 4 pin adapter hitting my side glass panel making it difficult to close the panel without hitting the glass.

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a beautiful power supply! And yes, that's awesome that it comes with a 2x8pin 12vhpwr cable. I think everyone needs one and the adapter should become obsolete. What case are you using that you ran into an issue with the adaptor?

  • @mrmrgaming
    @mrmrgaming ปีที่แล้ว +3

    OC any 4090 is very hit and miss. Is it worth the electric cost? I don't think it is because the games that improve from the OC are very different. Some get 3/5 fps, and some have done 10/15+.
    In my bench runs, the Suprim X was slightly faster than the Strix OC out of the box, but I would say if you were to push the cards, the Strix would be the winner, but again, at what cost for what gains.

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I'm in the mindset of buying something that's fast enough out of the box. I'm not interested in OC'ing for a 1-5% gain. I'm also not performance focused. I'd rather have a good looking, stable card that's a bit slower than something that crashes in the middle of my game.

      Strix OC, great build, great cooler, ok lighting, quiet, 2 HDMI, noticeable coil whine.
      Zotac Extreme, odd-looking but cool, amazing lighting, terrible fans. Ok amounts of coil whine.
      Gigabyte Gaming OC, plain, great vrm temps, can OC a lot, average fans....mine set on fire at stock. Think a power phase blew. ok amounts of coil whine.
      Suprim X, great looks, quiet, best benchmarks by about 3/4% out of the box, noticeable coil whine.
      Suprim X also seem to have better lower av fps so it felt a little smoother than the other 4090s, but its coil whine is as bad as the Strix OC.

      @MrMr Gaming, it sounds like we've reviewed quite a few of the same cards. Sub'd your channel - keep at it! Next up for me is a MSI 4090 Gaming X Trio and a Zotac 4070 Ti OC Trinity. @Hokie2k11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @JohnLCharette

      My theory is that 3x 8pin connectors + 75w from the board adds up to 525w. That means people with only 3x 8pin connectors on their power supply can still use the full force of the card. You'd want to use 4x 8pin connectors for the full 600w.

      @@JohnLCharetteI think the right aproach should be a combination of acoustic treatment and the right microphone. Don't know what you're using at the moment but condensers are so unforgiven with reverb and room tone. Dynamics, on the other hand, pick up much less of that. But whatever mic you use, acoustic panels on walls and cealing would help. Use carpets on the floor as well. I originally had this card connected to a Lian Li SFX 850w power supply. That power supply comes with a 2x 8pin connector to 12 pin - that's the white cable I used to power it on at first. It seems like that cable only supports up to 300w of power and will not power on any 4090 (they require at least 3x 8pin connectors). I then connected my Corsair RM1000X and it worked great. Neither of them have a native 12 pin connector though. From what I've seen, it's still pretty rare and expensive to find a true ATX 3.0 power supply with 12 + 4 pin from the power supply.

      All depends on your load and if it's a good quality PSU or not. I was running a Rog Strix 4090 OC with a 5800x3d which is 105w TDP, 6 120w rans, 360mm AIO, 2 M.2 drives, 2 SSD's, with about 150w of headroom still left on a EVGA 850 G6 with no problems at all. I even had the Strix 4090 overclocked. Even with a power spike that PSU is capable of handling my components with no problems. Protections for an EVGA Supernova G6 include OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), Dual OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection), and OTP (Over Temperature Protection).Operating at peak efficiency, instead of maximum capable load is the objective with PSU over sizing. You can have a look at individual PSU efficiency vs load %, usually peak at 50~60% load. You can push to 100%, there is some efficiency loss but not as significant as in crippling your performance, though at this point your component is generating more heat than usual which is killing your unit faster.

    forgive naivety here, still learning. can someone PLEASE help me understand below or refer me to a resource?
    -why do some 4090 24g cards have a "gaming" distinction?
    -do all 4090 24g cards perform the same? aside from thermal management, materials, and form factor, is there anything else?
    for example:
    nvidia has msi 4090 suprim x 24g in stock but not their branded card. asked customer service for clarification, "you'll need to reach out to msi as i cannot speak on their products." reached out to msi and they were equally unhelpful. bestbuy and microcenter didn't know either.
    tried reddit but feels like i'm chatting with children (i.e. condescending responses).

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  ปีที่แล้ว

      @joni, thanks for reaching out. I've had similar issues with Reddit. I'll do my best to answer your questions.
      Why do some cards have 'gaming'? That's just the marketing language used by MSI. Their 'Gaming Trio X' line is their mid-tier GPU, similar to an Asus TUF. MSI's highest-end card is their Suprim X, and Asus has their Strix ROG.
      Yes, all 4090s perform pretty much the same. They all use the same GPU created by NVIDIA, but the AIB (Add-in Board) partners such as MSI, Asus, Zotac, Gigabyte use their own techniques for exactly what you said - thermal management, materials, and form factor. Some cards are pre-overclocked by a bit. Does that mean they'll be slightly faster out of the box - possibly. I've reviewed four 4090s now and their performance all range from 1-5% of each other. Not really noticeable. It comes down to size, lighting, cooling methods and brand love.
      No matter which 4090 you choose, you'll get an impressive card. I recommend grabbing any 4090 you can find, as they are hard to find. If you don't like it or find another, you shouldn't have a problem re-selling it. Happy 4090 hunting! Hi, could you elaborate on why its bad to run the 4090 on 3 cables instead of 4?

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jacob - firstly, I'm not an electrical engineer but this is how I understand it. When the GPU requests power, in the case of this Suprim, up to 520w of power at full draw but other 4090s can draw up to 600w. When the GPU requests power from your power supply, it will use all available power connectors. Each PCI Express 8-pin connector is rated for approximately 150w. Hence, the 4x150w = 600w. If you use 3x150w cables, the cables are only rated to handle up to 450w of power. If your card requests the full 520w or 600w, it could melt the cables or catch fire. As I mentioned in the video, it will work, but it is NOT recommended. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

      @@JohnLCharette You are wrong. It is fine to use only 3/4 cables. then the adapter will only provide up to 450w

    • @JohnLCharette
      @JohnLCharette  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adapter doesn't determine the amount of power that can be used. It's simply the route it takes. It's the card that requests power. If you use 3 cables, you'll have 450w + 75w from the board that the GPU can draw safely (525w). That's probably why MSI limited their 4090 Suprim card to 520w. BUT, if you're using a 4090 FE, which can draw to up 600W, you'll need the 4th cable to be safe. Technically, 3 cables + 75w from the board, could probably handle 600w, which is only an additional 25w per cable over spec, but it isn't recommended.

    • @g0d638
      @g0d638 ปีที่แล้ว +2
