I’m begging you not to do that. My aunt is a director and she will never cast a girl (especially white girls) if they sing burn or anything from Hamilton
My high school choir teacher had this great story about a musical audition he did. He had to pick a Disney song to sing on the spot and picked "A Whole New World" from Aladdin. He forgot that the song was a duet so when the music got to Jasmine's section he panicked and ended up singing Jasmine's portion in falsetto much to the amusement of the director. The best part is that he actually got the role!

Piano music is on another level in musical theater. I played in a couple and it's insane. You pretty much never stop playing and if you mess up you can screw the entire pit.

Why beat yourself down. I auditioned for a musical for the first time this year even though i knew that i wouldn't get a role. I did it for the auditioning experience.
@@tanatya6352 I feel like it's a little bit different when you weren't that eager to audition in the first place but your friend, who ran the auditions, eventually convinced you and then you find out they knew you probably weren't going to make the audition in the first place, so you auditioned against your will for no reason and never want to do it again
@@hellogoditsmesara3569 I guess i just have a different perspective on auditioning because i have done it only a couple of time. I suppose that if you are more of a professional you will do it only if you believe you can make it.
@@tanatya6352 I would be far from saying I'm a professional, but usually I'm behind the curtain so being on stage isn't my cup of tea. I'd rather not be encouraged to audition when I've 1. already expressed interest in stage managing instead, and 2. not have a chance of making the role anyway and have it reasserted in my mind that I had the right idea that I don't have any business being on stage.
As a pianist involved in several community theater and school theater programs, I agree with most of what you've said. Especially, don't bring in something with a ridiculous piano part! I've stumbled my way through several auditions with Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown pieces. Even if you can sing them perfectly with your rehearsal track, they probably won't go well in an audition. I'll also add couple more points. Make sure that the copy of music you hand the accompanist is complete, (i.e. the bottom line isn't cut off because the copier can't handle oversized scores), clean and clear (no excessive markings ore smudges or a copy of a copy of a copy that you can still recognize some of the notes in) and has no awkward page turns (i.e. you're going to sing 8 bars from page 27 and jump to page 32 to sing the next 16 bars then repeat back to page 28 for the refrain). Also, make sure your score is in the key your going to sing in. Sometimes, pianists can transpose, but we shouldn't have to. I love the idea of finding a simplified accompaniment for some pieces.
Avery W well, we just got the cast list and i thought i did really good at auditions and callbacks but my theatre company just joined the junior and senior company (me) and we did matilda so it’s a child’s cast so everyone in the senior company got crappy roles including me and i go to class with some of the girls (including the one who got matilda) and they’re not that good especially compared to kids in the senior company... ok rant over
@@sofiaa8321 Ooh great!!! Let me know what part you got! I'm doing Grease right now and rehearsals are going great! I am only ensemble (you had to be 14/5+ to get a main cast just because of the maturity of the musical) but it is so much fun!
I took a master class with an actor and casting director about a year ago and they actually said they'd much rather hear a more well known song so that they can focus on the actual singing instead of also having to pick apart the lyrics. So if you're comfortable singing a song and its good just go for it don't worry that its "too popular"
Exactly. I recently did an audition spontaneously after years of not being in musical theatre and sang Think of Me, they didn't mind at all and they liked my audition. Got the part 😊
this isn’t a song, but one time when auditioning for shrek i used a monologue from the crucible because i ran out of time to find a new monologue. i will never be the same.
Here’s another tip that my vocal coach gave me: a lot of pop rock musicals actually give you permission to sing pop/rock songs. I auditioned for Spring Awakening with Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” The song fits the style of the show and the characters and it’s an unusual choice for an audition where they’d be listening to Next to Normal and Heathers and other pop rock musicals. I got really good feedback from that audition and ended up being cast. I added dramatic arc to the song and it made sense for the directors!! So think outside the box always!
@@lilygleaton3731 of course not! I hope I answer your question correctly, if not let me know lol. So, it took a while to find it in my key, but once I got the sheet music I started working on bringing the style of the show and the character I was going for into it. I created a storyline to follow and a person to talk to, and I assigned personal meaning to the words I was singing. When it comes to the technical part of it, I just sang it as the sheet music instructed (notes-wise) and added my own stylization to it (I looooove a good backphrase lol), without going too crazy of course. Doing it close enough to what the sheet music says is very important for the accompanist to feel like you know what you're doing and, this way, they won't think you're lost or anything. In my humblest of opinions, it all boils down to acting and what you bring to the song that is uniquely yours. Try to find what makes that song your own. Don't sing it exactly like the artist did. Find a character, find a need, find the arc of your feelings, and it should be just amazing! What musical are you auditioning for, if you don't mind my asking?! Maybe I can think of some suggestions! Break legs and kick some b*tt in that audition!
"Don't use songs from mega famous musicals!" Me: Okay this shouldn't be hard. I don't think Six isn't that popular yet and Hea- *She wipes out all the musicals I know* Me: Welp time to pack my bags I'm moving back to that Weeb community. Haven't visited the meme one in a while maybe I should re visit.. So one time I dun goofed up in singing a pop song. didn't get a role in the show.
@@poppymiller9846 yeah, no, I was saying the song was talking about his/her Dead Mom, so if JD's mom was singing it, it wouldn't make sense if you know what I mean?
Kat: "DON'T pick a song with a crazy piano part..." Me: "Sondheim?" Kat: "...unless you're auditioning for a show with a crazy piano part." Me: "Sondheim?" Kat: "Sondheim. I'm referring to Sondheim." Me: "Called it."
As a director, I hate these types of lists; they're more overdone than the songs they say are overdone and always make broad generalizations. A fellow director put it best, don't assume to know what I want or don't want - ask. Some directors may not want to hear certain songs, others don't care. One director may want to hear any song, so long as it's not from the show you're auditioning for; another director, like myself, may prefer you sing a song from the show, to get a better idea if or how you might fit into that production. Make no assumptions. Ask. The only given going into an audition is that, whatever you sing, it should showcase the strengths of your voice; and invariably be appropriate for the tone of the show you're trying out for. That's it. Anything else is just one person's opinion. Even if 100 other people share that opinion, it doesn't matter much if you're auditioning for 101st person who has a different perspective.
she said “don’t sing repetitive songs’ and my mind said ‘i’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair i’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair i’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair and send him on his way im gonna wave that man right outta my arms im gonna wave that man right outta my arms im gonna wave that man right outta my arms and send him in his way. guess what’s stuck in my head now lol

“Good morning, I’ll be auditioning for the role of Anne Boleyn and I’ll be singing ‘satisfied’ from Hamilton”

i was a 12 year old girl at the time.
i was trying out for wendy in “peter pan jr.”
I sang Javert's suicide, and I'm a girl, and it was for Beauty and the beast...
Similar experience!!! I was 14 and sang You'll be Back from Hamilton. I was auditioning for Jane Banks in Mary Poppins
i sang dear theodosia for a candy man kid in willy wonka jr
I love that song. My dad used to sing it for auditions. I think I’d cover it but not use it in an audition context.
I once sang “Your Welcome” from Moana
I was auditioning for Charlie in Willy Wonka

Biggest mistake I ever did was auditioning in the first place
@@hellogoditsmesara3569 Alright. If stage management is what you are passionate about good for you. Go for.

This is legit my go-to audition song 😂😂

If you don’t mind me asking, how’d you do the song? I’m trying to find some songs for a pop/rock musical and I need help lol
Break legs and kick some b*tt in that audition!
my school is doing we will rock you, what songs should i audition with?
:)
@notsoyellowbrickroad Thank you so much!! The audition didn’t go as well as I hoped but I’ll keep your idea in my back pocket ☺️

Welcome to me slowly realizing that I’m horrible at picking audition songs...
