This sounds like something I would do. I remember at my first audition, Hairspray Jr, I asked my friend out of curiosity is drag counted as musical theatre experience, and everyone turned and looked at me, assuming I DID DRAG AT THIRTEEN YEARS OLD (I mean, I find nothing wrong with drag and absolutely love the idea!) but I was mortified. The casting directors didn't hear it, but my *amazing* friend turned towards them and said, "NO, AVA, DOING DRAG DOES *NOT* COUNT AS MUSICAL THEATRE EXPERIENCE! TOO BAD FOR YOU, AMATEUR!" 😐😑😶
Honestly, I think that fits pretty well. I mean, Lifeboat has that sort of sadness in it that Eliza has to show while also having that sort of frantic, strong piece that shows you won’t be impossibly quiet!
Normally if you’re auditioning for a background part (Company/Chorus), you don’t have to prepare a song because “Happy Birthday” shows your range well enough.
Hi, I’ll be auditioning for John Laurens and Philip Hamilton and I’ll be singing “Defying Gravity” from wicked WHAAAAAAT WHY DID I GOT MARIA REYNOLDS D:??
That one kinda works as Dead girl walking is a ranchy, sexy song, in the same way, Say No to This is. However, Veronica was willing to have sex with JD, but Maria was forced into it by her husband, so......
“Do not use any Dear Evan Hansen or Hamilton.” *laughs in wrong because my first and only audition song was For Forever auditioning for Heather McNamara*
This is the best one I’ve heard ever.. “Hi I’m Auditioning for the role of Joanne in Sweeney Todd and I will be singling “waving through a window” from Desr Evan Hansen”

Actually I have a friend who auditioned for Chicago and was told a week prior to the call back that she should sing Valerie by Amy wine house and she got the part
in third grade i was auditioning for our christmas musical and i wanted the part of a shy and smart girl. *so, what better song to sing for it than the **_cup song?_*
Me too! Our high-school teacher directing the musical made it a requirement to either sing the Happy Birthday song or the Star Spangled Banner, because she wanted to know each actor's range. Not being American, I chose Happy Birthday. I started too high and kept plowing through, because I was too nervous to stop and ask to start again. I barely hit the high note, got a soprano part. Great fun none the less.
I auditioned for Into the Woods with “Good for You” from DEH and they loved it so they asked what else I had and I sang “Candy Store” from Heathers mainly because I wanted to do interesting songs that have some acting in it... anyway I got Little Red and I auditioned for Annie and sang “Burn” from Hamilton and for my callback I sang “Tomorrow” and “Hard Knock” and got Annie!!!
Amara Collier Haha thank you! I didn’t end up getting the part BUT it’s all good because I have an audition in a few days; and it’s a play so good thing i don’t have to sing lol!
My worst audition song was "Can't Stop Singing" from Teen Beach Movie. I was 10, and auditioning for Camelot (the musical). LOL! What's even funnier is that I got in!
My worst audition song was also my first audition 😭😭😂 I was 13 and auditioned for a musical theatre class with "Welcome to the black parade" acapella, asked if I could start over in the middle of it, and then sang a different song. (I was auditioning for A Chorus Line 😂) Every time someone is nervous before an audition I tell them that story because nobody can make a bigger fool of themself than I did
At my first musical audition, i was auditioning for Annie and I sang “I don’t need anything but you” from Annie. So I sang a DUET as a solo and I sang a song from the show I was auditioning for so I broke two audition rules😂
My worst audition song was in 5th grade. It was a school play so it wasn’t exactly professional but they told us to choose a song to sing. I sang... Timber by Pitbull. That probably wasn’t the greatest choice for a mermaid in Peter Pan, but hey, I got the part.
Id like to say: "If you can own the song you choice to perform, like in really nail it - Then use it!" Meaning that you can use the simpliest or most overdone run of the mill song like A Castle In the Cloud or Memory IF, but only IF you really can own that song to the point where the auditioners fail into tears of joy. But if you do not perform the run of the mill kind of songs to perfection then do not use them or rather use songs that fits the above list instead. Johan.
What if it’s this kind of situation? My teacher asked us to send a 30 second singing clip as an audition to get into the musical class. Would it be alright in that context?
@@sindhu7582 I would choice a song you know well enough to sing great but still is qualifying enough to show youre skills and range. It cold also be neat to try and figure out whst kind of music taste the teacher has and or what he or she has done earlier. But Id say that getting into a class is i a little bit different than auditioning for a part in a ensemble since its more imoortant to show were you stand singing vice over how you fit with a certain kind of style. But the important thing is to have fun and show that you have a passion for musical theatre - Those two goes a long way. Johan.
@@JohanMsWorld ah thank you so much! This was recommended literally when I was practicing for my audition (impeccable timing right?) and I was getting kind of worried bc my song choice was kind of ‘basic’? The assignment was essentially, for those who are interested in being in musical next year send a 30 second clip of yourself singing. Nothing else was specified. I chose memory from cats(how original) because -1.) I could showcase my range -2.) I know my teacher is fond of cats the musical -3.) I was confident in it(though not so much anymore) Thank you
@@sindhu7582 Sounds like a perfect match for you then - Did youre teacher enjoyed it? How much I love both Cats and Memory I must point out that Memory is so well known and so over used in normal auditions that its a risk that any auditioner might get astray of hearing it for the millionth time. And Cats also somewhat of a divider - There are those in the industry who had a strong bias against it. Johan.
QOTD: I sang “Roxie” from Chicago when I was 12 or 13 for my school musical. It was awful but some how I got the lead in the show 🤷♀️ Edit: the show was Annie 🤦♀️
I almost sang "Good For You" from DEH for a Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor dreamcoat audition. Then I realized....... so I ended up singing Mr. Mistofolees and I got my dream part (The Narrator)
I get the “no singing out of your range/casting type” but there have been times at my school (I’m in middle school) where the director would cast a girl for a male part. Sometimes it worked really well (one of our donkeys from Shrek, one of our Lumieres from Beauty and the Beast and one of our Le fus from B&B) and times where it didn’t really work out well (one of our Gastons for B&B). I think sometimes it works, but mostly it doesn’t.
P.S. worst audition song i used was me and my baby from chicago when i was auditioning for the childrens choir in joesph and the amazing technicolored dreamcoat😐not my brightest move
When I was nine, (and my family and I were completely oblivious to how dark the musical was) I sang ‘Happy’ to audition for Sweeney Todd. I wonder why I didn’t get the part?
Quick note about the difficult piano parts: I agree that professional accompanists ideally should be able to keep up with you. But I've seen it derail and fall apart too - or the entire conversation once you leave the room revolve around how crazy that piece was rather than discussing your awesome performance of it (the latter happens in almost every instance). Also keep in mind that not all accompanists play at the same level-- especially if this person is a volunteer, a student, etc. 🌻🌻This is just my advice and my experience Ps. Here's how to find a GREAT audition song 💕 th-cam.com/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/w-d-xo.html
Katherine Steele is it ok to sing Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera. Cause I'm a soprano. And can hit all of those notes....but idk if it's too popular.
Emma-Sue Miller I would strongly advise not to use Phantom or Les Mis songs in an audition. They're too well known and have a reputation for being overdone.
Katherine Steele I gave my accompanist ‘don’t rain on my parade,’ but it was a really crazy piano part and he had to slow WAY down so I had to sing it REALLY slow and it was SO AWKWARD !
I toooooooootally adore you. I'm learning so much with you. For worst audition song, well, was not exactly an audition...was a contest. The song was "Set fire in the rain". I didn't made any research and just pick a song that was too new at the time (Yeah.... too many years ago). When I finished I had this awful feeling of awkardness, looking confused faces in front of me. For two whole seconds (an eternity for me) nobody move a muscle. Was so horrible but I can laugh about it now.
ryann !! The song was sooo new at the time. Also 'set fire in the rain' has an abrutp ending, so the people got confused by a new song and an abrupt final... the whole auditorium just look at me in silence for several seconds before the aplausse. Was really akward haha Plus, not everyone here speaks or understands english...

ah, yes, i’ve always wanted to use “my girlfriend who lives in canada” for like a junior show. sadly, i’m slowly getting too old for that opportunity
ah yes, the internet is for porn is such a kid friendly song
Avsie Wasserman that is DEATH
E v e r y o n e ‘ s a l i t t l e b i t r a c i s t

I'll be auditioning for literally everyone in the French Revolution and I'll be singing Don't Lose Ur Head from SIX
but the real question is: did katherine get into little shop of horrors with walking on sunshine?
Book Nerd she did, I remember her talking about it.... apparently it was in a garage
yes she has spoken about it in other videos at least i think its the same production
2:30 but... what if... the male songs are perfect for my vocal range??
Laura Hayward-Price I relate!!!
in that case, look at the lyrics and story of the song to determine if it's right for the tone you're trying to push.
hi, i’m auditioning for the role of John Laurens and i will be singing *Dead Mom from Beetlejuice*
Hey mom dead mommmm
When I was 6 I auditioned for the little mermaid and I sang fight song 🤦♀️
Reese Grove excuse me how is that a bad thing
Same here, but I auditioned for Aladdin.
are..are you still 6?
@@1800basil LMFAOOOOOO
At my first musical audition, i was auditioning for Annie and I sang “I don’t need anything but you” from Annie. So I sang a DUET as a solo and I sang a song from the show I was auditioning for so I broke two audition rules😂
Gurl I sang Easy Street for my music theatre class. I did all three parts. 14 year old me was ambitious.
Hah, my first musical audition was Annie too. It was like 6 months ago and I got in so I felt hella good
I auditioned for Bonnie and Clyde with “I’m Alive” from Next To Normal. Didn’t get cast. Was this a bad choice?
OH MY GODDDDDD
the irony is there's a song called Dyin' Ain't So Bad in Bonnie And Clyde...
who did you get?
Hello I’m auditioning for Genie in Aladdin and I will be singing:
*six hours as a princess*
I just listened to Hamilton act one but whenever someone says his name everything gets faster... oh god I remember guns and ships...
That 1 Weird Theater Kid will you give me a link
I watched that.. OMG MY BRAIN HURTS
I watched that.. OMG MY BRAIN HURTS
Hahahahaha
My worst audition song was in 5th grade. It was a school play so it wasn’t exactly professional but they told us to choose a song to sing. I sang... Timber by Pitbull. That probably wasn’t the greatest choice for a mermaid in Peter Pan, but hey, I got the part.
Uncultured Swan why would you go out for ensemble
I chose memory from cats(how original) because
-1.) I could showcase my range
-2.) I know my teacher is fond of cats the musical
-3.) I was confident in it(though not so much anymore)
Thank you
@@sindhu7582 Sounds like a perfect match for you then - Did youre teacher enjoyed it?
How much I love both Cats and Memory I must point out that Memory is so well known and so over used in normal auditions that its a risk that any auditioner might get astray of hearing it for the millionth time.
And Cats also somewhat of a divider - There are those in the industry who had a strong bias against it. Johan.
QOTD: I sang “Roxie” from Chicago when I was 12 or 13 for my school musical. It was awful but some how I got the lead in the show 🤷♀️
Edit: the show was Annie 🤦♀️
I almost sang "Good For You" from DEH for a Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor dreamcoat audition. Then I realized....... so I ended up singing Mr. Mistofolees and I got my dream part (The Narrator)
A long time ago, I made the mistake of singing “Harry Potter in 99 seconds” at an audition...
*i hate myself*
*slow clap* 👏 👏 👏
I get the “no singing out of your range/casting type” but there have been times at my school (I’m in middle school) where the director would cast a girl for a male part. Sometimes it worked really well (one of our donkeys from Shrek, one of our Lumieres from Beauty and the Beast and one of our Le fus from B&B) and times where it didn’t really work out well (one of our Gastons for B&B). I think sometimes it works, but mostly it doesn’t.
In middle school I once auditioned for a religious Christmas musical with a Big Time Rush song and that might've been the lowest of lows for me...
The song was Stuck by Big Time Rush for those wondering...
OH OH OH OH OH
FREAKING ME
“Hi, my name is Sofia and I’ll be auditioning for Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, and I’ll be singing Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley”
I know someone who once used Michael in the Bathroom... let's just say they didn't get the part.
Kira Adelia oof I've done that 😂
Why is it bad?
I once auditioned for Shrek with Candy Store! 😂 But I got Donkey so... 🤷♂️
Kaydin Younger "Welcome to my candy stor..."
"Shut up donkey"
You sang three parts?!?
Lola Nicolau Let’s just say 11 year old Kaydin was out of breath by the second verse 😂
Hello! I'll be auditioning for Eliza Schuyler, and I'll be singing "Say No To This"
My worst audition song was by far was my audition for Seussical jr when I sang "The Cup song" a cappella :P
LOVE THE RED LIP
P.S. worst audition song i used was me and my baby from chicago when i was auditioning for the childrens choir in joesph and the amazing technicolored dreamcoat😐not my brightest move
Hi I’m auditioning for Connor Murphy
And I will be singing
Blue from heathers
...
I mean is blue ever an appropriate song lmfao
🎶You make me feel so blue🎶
When I was nine, (and my family and I were completely oblivious to how dark the musical was) I sang ‘Happy’ to audition for Sweeney Todd. I wonder why I didn’t get the part?
hmmmmmm yes I wonder why you didn't get the role xD
You were NINE and your school had that play showing?
Quick note about the difficult piano parts: I agree that professional accompanists ideally should be able to keep up with you. But I've seen it derail and fall apart too - or the entire conversation once you leave the room revolve around how crazy that piece was rather than discussing your awesome performance of it (the latter happens in almost every instance). Also keep in mind that not all accompanists play at the same level-- especially if this person is a volunteer, a student, etc. 🌻🌻This is just my advice and my experience
Ps. Here's how to find a GREAT audition song 💕 th-cam.com/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/w-d-xo.html
Katherine Steele life saver💖🙏
can you do a video on how you paid for college? i know it seems obscure, but i need help lol
ps ily you're amazing
Katherine Steele is it ok to sing Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera. Cause I'm a soprano. And can hit all of those notes....but idk if it's too popular.
Emma-Sue Miller I would strongly advise not to use Phantom or Les Mis songs in an audition. They're too well known and have a reputation for being overdone.
Katherine Steele I gave my accompanist ‘don’t rain on my parade,’ but it was a really crazy piano part and he had to slow WAY down so I had to sing it REALLY slow and it was SO AWKWARD !
I’ll be auditioning for Heather Duke.
I’ll be singing Lifeboat
Lexi Chan XD (wrong heather but i know it’s intentional)
I toooooooootally adore you.
I'm learning so much with you.
For worst audition song, well, was not exactly an audition...was a contest. The song was "Set fire in the rain". I didn't made any research and just pick a song that was too new at the time (Yeah.... too many years ago). When I finished I had this awful feeling of awkardness, looking confused faces in front of me. For two whole seconds (an eternity for me) nobody move a muscle. Was so horrible but I can laugh about it now.
Alejandra Obando I sang Valerie by Amy Winehouse during some audition for a musical, I got in, but I don’t know what I was thinking.
wait so what went wrong??
ryann !! The song was sooo new at the time. Also 'set fire in the rain' has an abrutp ending, so the people got confused by a new song and an abrupt final... the whole auditorium just look at me in silence for several seconds before the aplausse. Was really akward haha
Plus, not everyone here speaks or understands english...
Nothing beats when I sang Parents Just Don’t Understand (a rap) by Will Smith at an audition for Stuart Little 🤷🏻♀️😂
*me just sitting here singing “Maybe” from Annie to play Ursula in a production of the Little Mermaid Jr.*
I once used On My Own (classic) in an audition for Guys and Dolls, when I’m a soprano. Why did I think any of that was a good idea
The Sound of Music. I Am A Baritone. WHYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!
Hi I'll be auditioning for the role of JD and I'll be singing "Blow us all away" from hamilton
i once sang supercalifragilistic. as an audition song. for the lion king.
cool
I mean it's Disney....
