a tip my voice teacher gave me that i love: when you're hitting a high note, imagine it as a bird landing on a telephone wire. like kat said, if you land on top of the note rather than scooping up to it, its way easier!
Yes, this also helps to nail the pitch better too. I always visualise firing the note forward, like an arrow. It keeps the pressure out of my throat and gives the sound a bit of brightness.
Actually funnily enough, I have like a super jazzy (swoopy?) Voice and I have a lot easier time hitting a high note scooping up to it. I know this can make people sharp or flat but it actually is better for me to hit the right not swooping/scooping up
@@mahoganyk Be careful not to throw yourself into the note. I've heard people who 'scoop' and it doesn't produce a very nice sound and typically strains the singer's voice.
Kath: Number one, hydration Me: *slinks away and goes to fill up my water bottle knowing the only think i've had to drink today was two glasses of lemonade*
i saw beetlejuice yesterday and was like “i wanna be on broadway” but then i remembered i cant sing, how did she know i needed this?? edit: wow never expected 65 likes lol another edit: wow 113!!
OH MY GOD THE SOFT PALATE THING WORKED NOW I CAN SING WORLD BURN WITHOUT SOUNDING LIKE A DYING WHALE THANK YOU KAT YOU ARE MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok but I was just watching your “ how to become a good singer “ video from like 2 years ago earlier because I have an audition coming up????? I’m sorry what??? Theatre cult mom is reading minds????
I thought I was a horrible singer (I could barely sing above a whisper without sounding like a screlting pigeon) but then I got into a musical theatre class where there was only a few students so the teacher could really help me with my singing. I'm still not the best but I can decently sing most soprano songs! Ya just gotta practice and believe in urself. :)
This is really helpful because I’ve been considering quitting a sport I’ve done for 12 years and starting to get more involved with Musical theatre. Thanks!
Kat: Your vocal chords are a muscle. Use your core! Me: IT’S A SPORT AND AN ART, PEOPLE. Loved this video! I got into choir last year as a sophomore, and it’s completely changed my HS experience. Thanks for these tips! Definitely using them! PS-I got an OBCR of The Light in The Piazza from their run on Broadway. You’ve inspired me.
Omg that’s cool🥺❤️ I’m a rising sophomore in high school and I’m I’m musical theater and in choir. I’m not new to choir (been doing it for several years) I’m kinda new to musical theater and I still need to work on my singing and acting
Hi Kat! I have been seeing a vocal teacher for a few months now and we have been working to remove some pesky built-in tension from years of me putting pressure on my larynx and "sitting" on my vocal cords. Everything you said here is such good information and it's always nice to hear it repeated by others in the field --- makes me feel like my work and practice is on the right track!
This video came out at the most perfect time, I have a performance exam tomorrow, and I’m singing “watch what happens” from Newsies. Thanks Kat!!!! ❤️😆😁
“You might have seen my giant ridiculous oversized water bottle, his name is Nathan” I had to stop to think about why I never thought to question that 😂
So true. I work as a marketing researcher, where I talk to people on the phone a lot, so I'm gonna apply the same things, to look after my voice and do voice warming up before work
I’ve recently heard that constricting your abs is actually bad and results in screlting. As long as you have good posture, you’re already supported. What’s most important is that you take belly breaths (ie not tensing your shoulders, chest, and neck to breathe, which results in a shallow breath) and resist excess air coming out.
I’m starting a vocal class at community college in February! If I like the teacher, I will approach him about private lessons. Thanks for the encouragement, Kat & cult. Y’all are the best. ❤️ Also yes PLEEEEEEASE make more of these!
OMGeezness! Kat posted a vid on Sunday! My neck is in pain so I’m glad I have a video to make me happy. Edit: I’m not in musical theatre yet, but I’m in choir and she mentioned it! Yay! Choir is my favorite! Also, happy theatre cult!
I never knew how much I actually know about singing until I watched this video and realized that my vocal coach has already taught me everything you said, I feel so inteligent right now
YASSSS im trained by an opera singer (Rochelle Bard just in case you wanna look her up I think you would like her Kat) and im just vibin with all these things that are constantly running through my brain as soon as i open my mouth to sing
I've got my first singing lesson tomorrow and I'm so excited! I just got cast as juliet in a production of romeo and juliet which involves some singing so i took it as a sign to get back into lessons, I haven't had them since I was a lil kid so I'm so excited!!!!
I am on the app and I love it so so so much can’t wait for tomorrow to do it again I recommend it to anyone who love loves singing even if you are young like me
I cannot stress taking a class! I could sing before but I’ve come so far after taking classes. Still got a long way to go but a good teacher makes a difference!
"get lots of sleep so you can shrink'em down and sing really high notes" my forever mood. also I was out of voice lessons for a year and a half and it's amazing how much better i felt after just my first lesson back. WE LOVE VOICE TEACHERS.
I’m finishing up my undergrad vocal performance degree this semester and these are all things Ive talked about with my teacher. The only thing I’d add is that engaging the breath and having good breath support is important too!
I actively avoided watching this video while I was suffering from a vocal cord infection earlier this year because I missed singing too much--but this will definitely help me build my range back up! Gotta "hit the gym," which is harder with all the choirs I use for that being nixed right now.

I like to drink a nice cup of black coffee before I sing because it warms me up and puts me in a good mood! I sing lots of energetic songs, so when I’m smiling it always sounds better :)
Hey Kat, love your stuff. I would love to hear more of your stuff in the casting director world and all the behind the scenes stuff you’ve done. As a person who is going to school for stage managing while I love musicals, I also really enjoyed your videos on Beetlejuice closing, why broadway lost so much money, and how “making it” works. I will watch you no matter what and I love your humor, constant upload schedule, and in depth info. ❤️
Starting in REALLY early February my school is starting auditions for Shrek The Musical Jr. I’ve never done a musical before and I’m really nervous especially since I am very self conscious and I don’t like to sing in front of others. This video has taught me a lot and I now know what to do to improve on my singing. You’re the best!👍👍👍👍
I really want to join my school choir next year, but I already do band and I was really hyped for a while to be able and take an art class with it. Right now I’m a lot more talented in drawing than singing, but I’m also more interested in singing right now. Thankfully I still have a couple months left to decide lol
This was so helpful! I'm doing my first audition since college in a few weeks (um, over 20 years ago!) and I've learned SO MUCH from your channel. Thank you!!
Hi Kat and other members of the theater colt. I am currently having a panic attack bc tomorrow the cast list comes out for my school musical so I am currently binge watching ur vids to keep my mind off of that.
I've got the role as Earthworm in the James and the Giant Peach musical, and im a soprano 1!!! Im going to work hard to improve my lowet range and im super excited!
I recently asked my director what I needed to improve on and she responded with physicality. I was wondering if you had any good tips on how to work on such? I feel like it would be a good video topic that would help a lot of young actors. :)
I just found out on Friday I got into 2 of the 4 universities for acting I applied for (and the lecturer for one of the course told me I was perfect for the course and offered me a place on the spot) and I have another audition on 6th of February

Yes, this also helps to nail the pitch better too. I always visualise firing the note forward, like an arrow. It keeps the pressure out of my throat and gives the sound a bit of brightness.
It also helps to look at an object and sing to it, preferably something across the room. Choose a focal point to sing to.
