It annoys me how musical theatre generally isn’t as inclusive as straight acting, I’m legally blind and I always felt like people assumed less of me because of my disability, I understand because I’m legally blind I might take a little bit longer to pick up choreography but I even felt that way when I was just singing, I feel like all areas of the performing arts have a long way to go with inclusivity but I definitely felt much more accepted and valued for my talents when I started straight acting rather than just being seen as a liability in musical theatre, but this is just based on my own experience, I hope other people have had better experiences with this

It really bothers me how much women with truly deep voices are not appreciated. Every alto role is not really for an alto, it's for a mezzo with a range that includes some low notes. We see very few roles like Anna of Cleves from Six, Aurora from The Kiss of The Spider Woman for example which is built for a really deep voice.

my least favorite thing is the exclusivity that can happen. especially in high schools, there are seniors that will be super sweet to underclassmen and people younger than them, but there just some that aren't. and don't even get me started on the DRAMA. sometimes it feels like people in musical theater are super entitled
also idk if this is just my experience, but actors NEVER give the crew the credit they deserve.

    • @greekchick104
      @greekchick104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

When it comes to drama and crew not getting recognition in high school theatre, I relate all too well! I did both cast and crew, and I will say from my experience, the cast had WAY MORE drama than the crew ever did!! Also, a lot of the people I did theatre with were such garbage humans (not all, of course, but there were a good amount who were awful): they felt like they were the most important people in our school just because the high school I went to has a reputation for notoriously having a really good theatre program in my area, and they also were just so fake and they just loved to stir the pot and isolate people IN OUR THEATRE PROGRAM that they just didn't like for whatever reason (this I know personally bc I was on the receiving end of the isolation). So yeah, as much as I loved my time in high school theatre, the people I dealt with were kinda the worst.

  • @KassMcCormack

I totally get the favoritism thing! When I used to do musical theatre in middle school the same 3 or 4 people would get the lead roles every. Single. Year. Even after the teacher in charge made a rule that you could only get cast as a lead once she STILL cast the exact same people every single year and all of them were tone deaf with two left feet. Like I'm not saying I was a flawless singer (because little 12-14 year old me was far from being an Idina Menzel) but at least I could stay on tune and didn't constantly trip over my own feet or forget the moves in the middle of a performance and just freeze or forget my lines and just start riffing completely out of character. Like I worked my ass off and actually took it seriously because I genuinely loved performing (unlike the others who got cast as the leads who actually openly said they were only doing it to pad their high school applications) and the only time I even got close to being a lead was when I played Patty Simcox in Grease (which totally isn't a lead but apparently was enough of a lead for the director to count it in her stupid "one lead per person" rule so I was stuck back in the chorus or with a non-speaking role the entire rest of my time there). All of that (plus some other bs in high school that I won't get into) was enough to make me never want to do theatre again no matter how much I loved it and how happy being on stage made me. It just wasn't worth it.

Giiiiirl I was WAITING for you to bring up the issue of money. As someone who grew up poor, I definitely felt I was at a disadvantage in my high school drama club compared to the kids who could afford voice lessons/dance lessons/theatre camps/the option to not work part-time while in high school. Even now in my 20s, I've never had the opportunity to take the singing lessons I've so desperately wanted because I just can't afford it. It kinda makes me feel like I'll never be in a musical again, or if I do, it'll be an ensemble role because I don't have the training or skill for anything else.

    • @kandyappleview
      @kandyappleview 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

I feel you on that one. I feel that way about acting and just being in the theate world in general. But with singing, don't let lack of lessons stop you! There's tons of stuff in internetland to help. Talk around too, there might be music students who are just begging for someone to teach. You can do it!

Dancing is way trickier but I’ve been using TH-cam & Pinterest tutorials to help me. -As a singer in a wheelchair, I NEVER got cast in any musical I auditioned for. And yes, I cried when Ali Stroker got her Tony because FiNALLY. If 10 year old/teenage me had seen that, it would have been monumentally life-changing.
-Ticket prices in general are expensive, but if you need accessible seats, it’s obscene because you are usually closer.
-Having to cover tattoos for performances.
-The performing arts identity crisis is SO REAL.
-Inaccessible performance spaces/weird accessible stage entrances. I always felt like my directors/vocal coaches were ‘sneaking me in’.
-Despite knowing Wicked inside out and upside down, I logistically would never be Elphaba and it hurts my soul.
    -Still have not seen Hamilton.
-There’s a serious lack of Broadway quality shows in the Midwest, damn it. Why? We have theatres too!
-Finding performance opportunities as an adult is really hard.

@@Kath_Steele You need Zoya Naked Manicure!!!! It's a system that helps your nails be super healthy and look like you aren't wearing nail polish, but have some sort of real-world-photoshopped fingernails. I love it. There are 3-4 layers: a treatment "blurring" base coat, "perfecting" color layer(s) chosen to match your nail bed color, and a satin top coat. There is no polish shine, just protected, secretly polished nails! I'm also a fair girl, so I would get the buff and pink "perfecting" polishes to layer. They sell a kit with the base and top coats, pink polish and a tip perfecter. I found that adding the buff made it look more natural than just pink. The tip polish is for French tips, which probably wouldn't work for a totally no polish look. For job interviews, I use a metal nail art tool, dip it in the white and run it along the edge of the nail. Also, the treatment part is real, my nails are much healthier and stronger after a few weeks wearing this.
Enjoy your videos enormously. I was a drama kid in high school. I have a very deep voice, so my moment in the sun was as Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver! You should do a video about parts where you have a song, but are only in one scene, so everyone is astonished to meet you at the first run through. And they run around singing your song because it is NEW! and they haven''t heard it a million times. It's a weird niche.

The thing that I find most frustrating out of all of it, and a point that Kat touched on, is favoritism. Every. Single. Year. The director picks the same people. While they are reliable they aren't more talented than any other person by any great amount. You always see the ideal director in the media as some eccentric and outgoing person who's main goal is to support their cast and make the show the best it can be. My director is so....average? She just doesn't allow for that environment of growth that I, and everyone else in the cast, so desperately wants and needs. I don't have her as a teacher or taken choir so my ability to gain a relationship with her is very limited. I thought okay then, I guess I will do tech, at least make sure she registers me as a person, but as it turns out she already has a tech manager who deals with everyone. I feel like I can't even work my way into that zone of trust when she refuses to cast anyone she doesn't see every day in drama class and choir and acting class and improv. Sorry about that rant but wow does that bother me. Theatre is something that I have only within the past three years been exposed to or developed a passion for and it is such a crazy place, but I still love it.

My heart broke when I got a lead role in our schools production of “Legally blonde the musical” (I play Enid) and my best friend didn’t she got stuck in the chorus because of favoritism she’s not a favorite and I’m slowly becoming one and I know it hurts her because she would be a much better Serina or Margot or pillar because non of the favorites can sing besides me the Vivian and the Paulette and it breaks my heart and pisses me off that she is literally getting the worst deck for being so talented

Lord this. I’m currently playing Bazzard/Phillip Bax in “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. IN THE SCRIPT, Phillip Bax plays the waiter in “No Good Can Come From Bad”. I literally have three lines, then have to hand out the coats to the guests at the very end, wearing a tux of course. There is then 30 seconds for me to change into Bazzard. In order to do it, I have to wear my tuxedo OVER my wool period costume. We are 4 weeks in our run and I haven’t missed it yet, but I am just waiting.

I think my absolute least favorite thing about theatre is how under appreciated it is. Even if I suck up everything: wear no nail polish, get up early in the morning to go to rehearsal, watch someone else play the role that I wanted so badly, pay money for everything that costs money, and do everything else, still a bare minimum number of people will watch and appreciate how much work and effort went into it. So many people do not care.

High School Musical: my director (new company I was with) said I didn’t get a lead because she wanted to let other kids have a chance even though our Troy and Gabriella were ValJean and Eponine respectively when we did Les Mis not even two months prior (wasn’t even a lead then either)

Ugh! Thank you for being willing to talk about these issues! I just graduated in December with a BFA in Musical Theatre. But, I've been considering quitting theatre altogether because I just don't fit in well with it. I did pretty well in college and high school theatre. I was cast in every show I auditioned for, and I'm so, so grateful. But, I've found myself at a place where I'm not sure if I can look past the nasty politics of it anymore. Even as I was cast in every show, I had professors (who were sometimes the director) tell me that they didn't quite know where to put me because I don't fit in a box (either ingenue or character actress). In the interest of keeping this comment short (too late), I'll stop there. All of that was supposed to communicate this - THANK YOU. I feel slightly less alone in my frustrations seeing that someone was willing to talk about it.

Thenardie (can't spell) make since, they do a lot too. Cosette, not a great actor but only one who can hit the notes. It is our Eponine that hurts the most. She has never been in a musical before. SHE HIGHLIGHTED HER SCRIPT. She barely knows any of her notes/songs, it's been a month and a half. Her voice cracks on all the high notes AND EPONINE DOESN'T GO THAT HIGH. But, just the fact that seniors didn't get the leads when we are capable of it.

My problem with my theater community is that the kids that always get the leads aren't necessarily "good”, they are just the kids who have been there the longest. As a result, the newer kids that may have the talent don't stand a chance any it's really sad.
Btw, Kat- you are such a ray of sunshine I can't take you seriously when you say "Join my cult"

The most annoying thing is being a teenage alto, and having almost literally no roles to play or songs to sing in the original key!

Sally Jonesie I totally get this! I completely bombed my audition for my school’s Sound of Music because I sang a song meant for a 40 year old man and couldn’t do it well. But it was the only thing I could find

Worst thing when I could sing for Chicago, look in line but don’t have dance experience and can’t cause I’m too old to do the basics :( also I am not doing rehearsals with children, Reyes it for gymnastics took one year I left I did 2years of ballet so boring and I was a child tbh, only experience I have in athletics is being a black belt but I don’t think that counts for anything since I didn’t get the altheltic role in legally blonde :( the skinny blond girl got it :(

a personal pet peeve of mine is that directors i’ve had tend to type-cast me based on my looks and not on my voice! it’s frustrating, because i mainly get placed in alto or even tenor roles on some occasions, basically villains, mothers, and male leads; i have a true, bright, and occasionally operatic soprano voice, so i rarely feel like a true fit for the roles i get!

omg, the bit about getting sick is really relatable right now, haha. I'm sick, my mum's sick, my dad's sick, and a few weeks ago, 25% of my year group were off sick. I haven't been able to sing for 3 weeks, so I couldn't sing in my choir concert!

When a show you really don’t like is super popular, so people assume you like it, cuz they like it, and then they get upset when you express distaste for the show... this might be a “me” thing...

See, nobody in my area is really into Musical Theatre like I am (I know that sounds SO stuck up, but hear me out...) I live in Alabama and my school TORE DOWN their theatre to make a parking lot, because they dont care about the arts and they are more into sponsoring sports. Now the only community theatre we have is about a 30 minute drive away ( I have no car). I feel so lonely, and it makes me lose motivation to continue my passion, but it's people like Katherine and my fellow Theatre Cult members that keep me going.
So, Thank you for existing, Kat. You don't know how much your videos mean to me!
Edit: I'm going to community college next fall as a Theatre major and Transferring to a university as a BFA in Musical Theatre. We are making progress

My least favorite thing about musical theatre: The drama! Oh my goodness! There is so much drama among a lot of casts and crews.

This hit why to close to home for me... I quit school theater years ago due to horrible favoritisms. The director was a parent and she always cast her daughter for lead roles and only chose kids from StarStruck (a huge community theater in my area) probably in hopes to get some kind of benefit from her or some of the very rich families who went there. It made me feel like I was never good even especially since we couldn't afford to go to StarStruck. I have one more year stuck with her till I have the freedom of highschool drama classes. Just thanks for starting a convo about these topics
