      Actually you are hearing the voices in my head. That voice is telling me “You only have $15 cash to your name. Do the right thing: Treat yourself to a tall cold brew coffee, a chocolate croissant & a fresh copy of the Sunday New York Times.” Not a bad voice to hear when you consider the other more murderous possibilities... yikes!

    The tutorial is almost perfect. Two things to consider, once you place the bombilla you never move it ever again (unless it clogs, in which case you barely wiggle it). Another thing is that you sip it from the center of you mouth, not towads the sides. The rest is just about perfect. Nice job!

    • @zlatanibrahimovic7137
      @zlatanibrahimovic7137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@zlatanibrahimovic7137 the bombilla is metal and water is above 83-85 degrees, depending how hot you take it. I think you are more sensitive from the sides, so you don't want that hot metal in a sensitive area. EDIT: Testing as I'm writing this, it's easier to control flow from the center.

    • @encounteryerbamate4284
      @encounteryerbamate4284  6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      6th Commandment: Don’t mess with the bombilla.
      In the event that the bombilla clogs up, pass the Mate back to the Matero. Positioning the bombilla is an art that if not mastered might possibly ruin the whole Mate. In some cases even forcing the Matero to prepare a new one. Clogging may occur because of the type of Mate or because the bombilla is faulty or was not positioned right. In any case, you have every right to complain, but never EVER attempt to fix it yourself! Pass the Mate back to the Matero and let him have a look at it. So don’t fiddle with the bombilla, NEVER fiddle with the bombilla. Have I mentioned never to fiddle with the bombilla?

    I used to live in Argentina many years ago and haven't drunk mate for probably 20+ years. I got the craving to try it again and ordered some. I needed a refresher on how to prepare it. This was excellent. I even picked up some new stuff. Oh, and if you want to be legit, say the first part like boam (rhymes with foam) instead of like the english word bomb. Boam-bee-shza. Excellent video!

    Biggest advantage over tea is : 🧉doesn't cool down like tea does. Bcz a cup of tea is 100% liquid, but 🧉can contain the heat and even the wooden gourd (mine is not leathered, but is wood) keeps the leaves brewing as you drink. 👍

    What’s up bro, I’m from Buenos Aires Argentina, one thing, you are putting way to much Yerba there, it should never be like a mountain, and also, once you poured water the first time, never touch the bombilla again, at least that’s what we do here. But everything else was perfect, good video, respect

  • @Zathurastra
    @Zathurastra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    You are "sort-of" doing it right...but good god man, you have way too much in there. You hardly have any room for the water. You should be able to get more than three sips out of a gourd that size. Also, if you enjoy the bitter taste, you can use hot water rather than room-temp water in the beginning. The only reason room-temperature water is used is for two reasons, it reduces the bitterness of the first cup, and it cools the hot water down.
    If you're not concerned about the bitterness, use hot water to begin with and let it sit for a few minutes. The first few sips will put hair on your chest, but at least you won't have to deal with the equivalent of tepid coffee.

    • @TongaRoots
      @TongaRoots 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To me you shouldn't start with the hot water because it will be too hot for the next mates, don't do that. What I do is to go first with room-temperature water, and wait a bit. Then hot water, and wait until the yerba consumes it for 2 or 3 minutes. Then place the bombilla and prepare your first mate.

    We prepare mate very differently to this. My background is Lebanese and I love mate. We actually use a colander to remove the dust and wash it before we pour it in a small/medium size glass cup and sometimes we add herbal stuff to it (e.g., chamomile) than hot water. (some people add sugar which is odd to me not sure how they drink it with sugar). Some add honey as well because of the bitter taste which I love.

    Hmmmmmm... You can make the same effect by basically pouring in mate, putting bombilla into mate, put some water for mate to drain it and wait 5 minutes. What you are doing is just... weird stuff :D Oh, btw, don't touch bombilla after you put water into matero, because you will clog it.

    • @pip5528

      Up to 20 times. That's even more infusions than most Gong Fu Cha tea ceremonies. Of course, so is the amount of leaf. It's probably double or triple the amount used for Gong Fu brewing in a teapot or gaiwan, which makes me wonder the capacity of gourds. Chinese tea brewing vessels are typically 100-200ml roughly.

    Really good technique. Just wanted to add a few tips.
    I prefer to shove the bombilla in a straight diagonal line, if you play with it too much, you may clog the little holes and the water won't flow properly.
    Moving the bombilla is not really necessary, but you can experiment over time and see what works best for you.
    Spit the first 2 mates, it's actually bad for you, a guaraní taught me this and they were the first ones to drink mate. The reason for spitting is not only the bitter taste, but the fact that yerba mate has a dormant toxin that is awaken when heated by the water, so those first mates have a big concentration of it and is best to avoid them. That's why we say "The first mate goes to the boludo".

    • @danie90000

      How do you get the water the correct temperature without boiling it ?

    • @juampyvarela
      @juampyvarela ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danie90000 at least in Argentina, there are electric kettles that have the option for boiling and for mate (75°-80°C / 167°-176°F). That's the easiest way.
      If you have a metal kettle and heat it on the stove, you can either use a thermometer or learn to hear to a subtle sound the kettle makes when it's at that temp. When you hear that sound, lift and flip the lid, if there is a bit of steam releasing from it, you're good to go!

    • @encounteryerbamate4284
      @encounteryerbamate4284  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's kind of hard to say with this method but depending on how you brew your Mate, it can range from about 20 mg of caffeine per cup when using a tea bag, up to 135 mg per cup when using lose leaf mate. With an average amount of 78 milligrams of caffeine per 8 ounce cup Yerba Mate has considerably higher amounts of caffeine than green tea, equal amounts of caffeine as Red Bull, and just slightly lower levels of caffeine than the average cup of coffee.

    All good an nice but 2 things... 1 the traditional way is the convencional way actually :P I have never seen anybody to use a french press to make Mate in my 28 years of drinking it, and another thing, do-no-touch-the-bombilla, thats a given you dont touch it at any given moment, the mountain of yerba must get down slowly, you always have to get a bit of dry yerba at every "cebada" (pour), anyways thats like the way of doing it with friends and family the best way the kind of "Ritual" way but if you drink 3-4 liters of mate a day like me you end up not doing all that, since you are the only one that drink it at that given moment, but if you move around the bombilla while drinking it with friends its like "The hell are you doing to that mate!?!?!" :P

      @@matejaboltis9254 yeah well first just sift the yerba with a fine strainer the hand method is useless. You'll still get a bit of dust in.. I just create a filter with a disposable cloth (cut it with scissors) but that only works if your bombilla is a stainless steel spring bombilla ( which I recommend all the others are jus crap) problem solved ! Add some peppermint and you are in heaven! Edit: auto correct changed yerba with herbs 😂

      The healthiest drink would be water. Depending on which part in the world you are drinking it of course.
      Everything that is roasted has PAH in it, even coffee or some cereals. The thing is, in excessive amounts, everything is bad for you, even water.
      And the light green leaves shouldn't pose to much of a threat. (they still have a green color and not dark brown or black)
      Also, in a big city where cars are lining up in front of a red light, you think there are no PAH's there?
      Try and live a little, do what feels right, but do it in moderation and you'll be ok.
      That being said, enjoy your occasional mate. ;)
